WD has been hacked and still hasn't got their cloud service back on line. 8 days and counting has got to be up there with the biggest hacks in history.

At least I can access my data through local service and my NAS. Some businesses are on the verge of going bust.......

I guess this illustrates why you need data backed up on multiple systems plus a disconnected hard drive in a draw!

Western Digital suffers data breach, My Cloud still down (appleinsider.com)

Can you also fix my remote cloud access? That would be much more useful tbh.

Yes just tested and mine is down too. I only use it to store my CDs from long ago. I use PCloud now.

Never used MyCloud, couldn’t really get it to function properly, and the drive failed eventually anyway. Reading this has made me glad I hadn’t persevered with it.

Maybe use a Cloudflare Tunnel to access your NAS from anywhere and don't store important data on other peoples computers (aka "The Cloud"). However I'm a bit twitchy about 'others' having access to my stuff, ymmv.

I’m normally a champion of small(er) business but a global megacorp is absolutely what you want when it comes to data security/cloud access etc. I have great confidence in Apple/Google/MS etc but why would you rely on a relatively tinpot company like WD for access to important personal data - let alone critical business data! Madness.

Used to be a fan of wd mycloud until they decided to brick my original mycloud by stopping updates and telling me to unplug it from the web.

Gone to Synology now and that seems a lot better.

I wouldn't know as I soon gave up on my 3TB WD MyCloud with the software being so shite. I knew I should have paid the extra and gotten a Synology. Keep meaning to rip it open and see If I can get the drive out and stick it in a caddy.

Whose disks do you think the global megacorp store their/your data on?

^^^ completely irrelevant to WD’s ability to keep your data secure

Obviously, this issue isn't going to do them any good but I wouldn't call Western Digital a tin pot company as they must be worth billions.

The key word though is “relatively”.

I agree with that, but my point was that they are not a tinpot company. Also, being a global megacorp isn't any guarantee of their ability to keep your data secure.

Ok. Well, let me know when Apple or Google have a week long or more outage & I’ll change my mind.

Zilog is right, the software is rubbish. To be honest I only bought the WD because I wanted a NAS and it was cheap. Like others I probably should have bought a QNAP or something. It has been reliable up till now and as I use it as a NAS its only the remote access I'm locked out of, local access has been restored. Think I will probably investigate alternatives now though.

I check out the known security issues & breaches with QNAP before rushing to them.

Well, that was easy to get the drive out of the casing, once the clips popped on the housing it basically fell out. Now whether to get the Synology case for £100 from Amazon or just stick it in a caddy and plug it in when I need it.

@kuco  I also have the 3tb my cloud. If I also free my drive from the wd case is it simply plug and play with the synology case?  I assume you are looking at the DS120j enclosure?

@winston this is what I'm wondering, if I plug the hard drive in it will reformat it to work with Synology? And yes that was the one I'm looking at.

The DS120j was the enclosure I bought when mycloud stopped working.
I bought a new drive as didn't want to use the old one from the mycloud as it was quite a few years old and first gen.
