Nokia 6.1.  ~£200, excellent apart from the camera being a bit crap.  On the Android One programme so as stock as they come and guaranteed early updates.

Moto G6, special edition on Amazon with more stuff, similar price IIRC.

Went from a fancy Sony to a cheap Samsung.

It's surprising how annoying and un-intuitive the Samsung is, the amount of finger contact required to move things/navigate seems to be a nanosecond more or less than is required to open every. single. link. that passes under your finger tip. I'm almost beginning to assume it's a conspiracy between Samsung and pay-per-click advertisers.

Also it seems to store every single typo I ever make and offer them as auto-complete options in preference to actual words...

Got desperate enough to try and replace the screen on my Sony myself, with predictable results. At least the Samsung is cheap.

Never understood the love for Samsung.  Years ago I had the original Samsung Galaxy and it was such a POS that I vowed never to have a Samsung Android phone again.  I got an S5 (not by choice) a little while back and it didn't change my opinion at all.

Just had this myself, weighed them all up, similar budget. Wanted a decent camera. I had a Moto G5 and have always thought the camera wasn't great. I've had older phones that have been streets ahead.

Moto G6 camera doesn't get great reviews, so upped my budget a bit and got a Sony Xperia XZ1 compact. Good camera, nice and small-ish, and water resistant too.

Got mine second hand off an Amazon marketplace dude for £249 in as new condition.

Nokia 6.1.

The majority of Nokia owners on here seem to have had major issues, me included.

Perhaps that's just the Nokia 8, but I won't be buying another JIC.

The Nokia 6 had some problems, eg the speaker not working. Think most of this has been fixed with the 6.1, it seems a lot more reliable.

This was me.  Recently got a Samsung S8 and its very much more usable, automated just better than the Moto G5s it replaced.  Fast, awesome camera, IP68 and lots of usability.

I've had a Moto Z Play for going on 2 years now, it's been brilliant. Not the fastest but the battery genuinely lasts up to 2 days. It's nearly stock Android with just a few tweaks.

It's noticeably a bit slow now, I'm going to wipe it and start fresh but if it's still a bit laggy I'll be looking for something new. Maybe the current Z Play again.

But will keep an eye in here for other recommendations.

I was the same after the Galaxy S2, but was convinced by the positive comments of friends to give them another try and I'm very pleased with my S7.  I think I've since read it was the S6 or S7 where they sorted out a lot of the issues with Touchwiz.

A long-time Google Nexus/Pixel user here, going right back to the early dev only phones. I vowed I would never have a Samsung phone because of all of the shitware they put on them and then our new phone list came out at work and I could have absolutely any phone I wanted...apart from a Pixel because our carrier didn't sell them. After a bit of indecision, I plonked for an S8+ and...it's superb. I've had it just over a year now and it's not missed a beat. I would recommend it (or the newer S9) in a heartbeat.

Some interesting patents coming out of Samsung recently. While everyone else is adding nasty notches to their screens, Samsung look to be heading towards in-screen fingerprint readers, sensors, speakers and even front-facing cameras, so you can get a full edge-edge display while still maintaining the same functionality as today. If they can pull it off for the S10 or S11, then I'll be first in the queue!

Yeah, I've been told that the S6 was the first "not shit" Galaxy.  Still not entirely convinced though. (-:

How high do you have to go to get a noticeable difference from base Motorola G5 standard. I have a Lenovo P2. Absolutely fine. But some of the pictures being taken on phones now are stupendous. Is it possible to get noticabnot better pictures on the OPs budget?

Just taken delivery of a Xiaomi MiA2 Lite and for my purposes is spot one, good size screen and no bloatware being part of the Android One range so is basically a vanilla version of Android.

Wife and daughter both have Xiaomi Phones and both have been spot on so far.

I'm happy with my s5.

There again I've not used anything better.

My fantasy phone would be the same size, have a replaceable battery ,  be able to integrate internal storage and sd card and have a mega camera .

I liked the dtek blackberries but broke two of them because I kept dropping them and I couldn’t get a cover. The d60 has a pleasant glass panel front and back. Good for two drops from a metre with no ill effect. The third drop it’s knackered.

finally paid the apple idiot tax and bought an iphone. Whats app sucks on the iphone and it keeps trying to make me spell iphone iPhone. Other stuff works oh so well and so much nicer then android

I skipped from S4 to S7 edge (with an OPO and a Sony Z2 in-between) and the difference is massive. Nothing like touchwiz of old.

I have a Samsung A8 dual sim (£330) only experience with Samsung was an awful Samsung XCover through work. Really pleased with it. It’s a poor man’s S8 but does everything I need it to and more. No obvious bloatware. Other than the mandatory Ramadan calendar entry because it’s a UAE phone!

Can’t see me going back to iPhone.

For future reference anyone down sarf looking for a Xiaomi phone or other Xiaomi product, they are opening a new store in the Westfield Shopping mall Shepherds Bush, and 3 are also going to start stocking them.

I'd imagine the prices will be higher than buying from Gearbest or Aliexpress though.

I'm a convert to Xiaomi, just picked up a Pocophone F1 which apart from the daft name is amazing for the price. I wanted a 3.5mm headphone socket and a microsd card. It has a good camera and is in the top 10 fastest phones you can currently buy. 6gb of ram and 128gb disk space for £250. It's a little bigger than I would have liked, but they all seem to be nowadays and I've got used to it already.

With 200 to spend the Chinese brands are probably your best bet.

I don't know why more people don't have One Plus phones. They get the best write-ups and they're cheaper than others with similar specs. I've had most Android makes and it's the best one.

Friends in the far east have recommended me to buy Hauwei which I think is beyond your budget £200.

I shall be upgrading in December but still deciding on Hauwei or Samsung as my budget is low too ... 🙂

Honor 9 lite £140 on Amazon. Absolute bargain.

Or up the budget to £350 and get the Huawei p20 lite. Mrs G has just got a Huawei Mate 20 Pro and its a stunning device, mind you at £800 it should be. Defecates on my HTC U11 from a great height.

Samsung and Apple need to up their game as the Chinese smartphones are brilliant.

I have an Alcatel One Touch. Cost around £80.

But you can't call overseas free using wifi on whatsapp.

Mine is used to call overseas using whatsapp and get updates from friends at home. 😀

The amount I spent on phone bill calling overseas over the years is worth just getting one.

Also it is good as alarm clock ...

I got the Pocophone from eglobal, the prices have gone up a little, the 6gb/64gb model is £260 now.

I had the xiaomi redmi 3s previously which was brilliant value for £100, it lasted me 2 years. Not sure why anyone would ever buy a Samsung or a sony with Xiaomi selling a better phone at 1/4 the price.

I think I've found my perfect phone in the galaxy s8...

Waterproof, really fasr, lovely screen..

And... It's the perfect size. Big enough to use, small enough to easily fit in the pocket!

In recent years I've owned a Galaxy S5, S6, S7 edge and now an S8. Each has proven to be better than the previous one but the incremental improvements are becoming less and less. Once all of the Samsung bloatware has been removed they are good phones IMHO.

We've just changed my wife's S5 for a new phone and have bought her a Motorola G6 plus.

For the money (it's contract free) it's a damn good phone.

Stick it in a protective all around case and it's just like almost any other android phone.

Is the Samsung worth the extra having seen what the G6 can do ?  - doubtful to be honest.

If you're thinking about a Huawei P20 lite I'd have a look at their more recent offerings as alternatives.

Honor 8x and Honor Play available for the same sort of price with better specs. The 7x and Honor 9 have been reduced because of the 8x and 10 releases. The 9 is definitely better than the P20 Lite and is more compact if you didn't want a huge phone.

Fast charging & it plugs in either way up.

Probably not worth paying extra for at the moment, but not a bad thing to have.

I wouldn't be without USB-C.

Charges so quickly I don't have to remember to plug it in overnight and should last longer than the woeful micro USB.

Just replaced my nearly 3 year old Blackview bv6000 with a bv8000 pro 6/64 GB  (looked at the 9000 but apparently quite a few have had issues with it) paid £119 on Amazon for it . Was happy with my first Blackview phone  so hopefully this will be as good.
