I'm sat here in my car outside Glossup on the Snake Pass watching the police and roadside assistance wallahs pulling a motorbike out of the heather and take it away on a low loader along with the car it presumably hit.

He said it'll be at least an hour longer before the roads open. I could turn round back past Ladybower and then either through castleton and Wynats or over the Woodhead. Both seem like pretty huge diversions, adding around an hour to the journey.

Got me wondering what the longest diversion you could get in the UK is. My vote would be a closure on the  Roy Bridge to Laggan road. You'd have to divert via Crianlarich or something silly. Unless you could get over the corriearack or whatever it's called.

Actually, thinking  about it, could I get the van down Doctors Gate.....hmmm

Any bigger ones further north...

I'm sure there was a 3 hour detour on the west coast of Scotland a few years back, heard it on R2 traffic news.

Possibly Tainauilt?

If the A85 is shut south of Tyndrum its a long way round.  I found this out once.  Inverary, rest and be thankful, loch lomondside

a few years ago a mate going from Fortwilliam to mull got caught in a road closure.  just south of fort william - I think he want spean bridge, laggan, a9 , pitlocherly, loch tay tyndrum oban 150 miles instead of 40

There is a 64 mile diversion on the m27 this weekend.  No idea who would actually follow the official diversion though

Slightly off topic, but this afternoon a coach load of Stevenage fans on route to Carlisle decided to head home when they reached a closure on the A66, and decided no alternative route was feasible.  Doubt much thought went into that decision.

When the bridge at Braemar was damaged a few years ago in flooding there was a diversion of about 130miles in place. On 2 roads that had snow gates and it was January.

There could be several over 100 miles in the Highlands.

Friends once had a 5 hour closure at Onich for a fatal crash, as they tried to get home to Crianlarich from Ardgour. They  had decided to sit it out after realising they would have to do FtBill-Laggan-A9-LochTay loop...

One of our group had a bad smash up on the main road down from fort bill by the top of Loch Lomond a few years ago. Head on with another car, all ok but it was 5 hours before they sorted the mess out. We were just in front and hadn’t even twigged, but it was a long wait for the others. It’s miles around from there.

Ive been stuck up at crianlarich with the tyndrum road closed, was a bit of a pain to say the least. There’s not a lot you can do to avoid closed roads up in the highlands is there.

I was in Nevis Cycles earlier this summer and the guy noted that any accident in the west Highlands area that required the investigation unit had to wait until they got there from Dingwall!

Being somewhere like Durness and wanting to go east would require a big detour if there was an accident on the north coast road. Basically back to Laxford Bridge, down to Lairg then back up to the north coast. There's not many roads up there 🙂

You're in your lovely holiday home at Ardmair Bay and you pop into Ullapool for dinner.  Whilst having dinner, someone kills themselves driving furiously down the hill into Ullapool and the road is closed.

No problem, just take the long way round.  It's really quite a long way round...

Fek me! I think we have a winner! That's chuffin' miles. I think I'd be looking for a room in Ullapool, except everything's booked up because of the NC500 🙁

A couple of years ago I sat in 100mph+ winds on Rannoch Moor for a couple of hours whilst the 3 hgv’s lying on their sides were dealt with. I didn’t fancy the (small in comparison) detour to Fort Bill via Duror

The Stevenage fans may have looked at the diversion and additional time and decided they wouldn't get there for the game. Did that from Reading to Swansea one time, got held up before we even crossed the Severn Bridge (before there was a second) and the detour all round Gloucester made it not viable.

The road just north of Tarbert on Harris was closed by a landslip last week - at the same time as the ferry terminal was out of action due to a partially submerged fishing boat. The route to Stornoway would therefore have entailed driving down to Leverburgh, catching the ferry to Berneray, driving to Lochmaddy, catching the ferry to Uig, driving to Ullapool and then the ferry to Stornoway.

The road from Stromeferry to Strathcarron is quite often closed due to landslides. So the diversion is all of the way around the A87 and A82 via Loch Ness, about 120 miles.

There is currently roadworks going on, so they are letting traffic drive along the railway line next to the road. But they have to stop this when a train is due. Apparently some people stuck in queues for hours.

The other option would be to run a ferry to Stromeferry (No Ferry).

Several (about 30!) years ago I was staying in tayinloan when a bad accident between Tarbert and Kennacraig closed the road.  The diversion was via Arran - probably OK if you were going to/from Glasgow etc - if you actually wanted to be in Lochgilphead you’d have been really stuffed - must be well over 7 hours to do a journey that would normally take 20 mins!

fortunately we didn’t need to go north until the road reopened.

Not so much the biggest as most irritating, I was going to Inveraray and someone drove nto the side of a campervan on the bridge just outside of town- A83 shut, diversion via Tyndrum- 70 miles and 2 hours to get less than 2 miles.

Surely that one is in the park and wait/walk territory?

Anyway less serious answer the Falklands or Brexit

There was a serious incident between my house & Morrisons the other day which meant I had to drive a mile extra instead of walking 500 metres.

Talk about being inconvenienced!

Road was closed for longer- I think there was at least one decent injury and some roadworthiness or legality bother so they were having to do a load of work before they could clear it, it was still closed when I got to the other side and I'd had a nice ride
