Sorry to go all art house on your 'asses but 'TIMBUKTU' was on telly the other night (so might be available on catch up).
It's a film by a director from Mali about the Islamist occupation of Timbuktu, came out a couple of years back and is the best, most beautiful film I've seen in a long time.
Another one is 'THIS IS NOT A FILM' by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, He was put under house arrest by the gov't there, so decided to make the film he wanted to make in his own apartment whilst under lockdown. Can't think of a more appropriate film given the current circumstances.
Definitely not mainstream but all the more brilliant for it. Films that make you think, both of them.
Also, I'd forgotten about watching Memento, the film Nolan made after all the other ones.
Watched The Platform on Netflix last night. The basic premise is some sort of prison thing with lots of levels, 2 people on each level. A platform of amazing food descends every day but what you get depends on the level you're on. Every month your level changes.
Not my usual thing, first horror / dystopian nightmare film I've seen in ages. Captivating yet absolutely grim.
Well worth a watch. Very little actually happens, I could write the plot on a post it. But the characters are fascinating but you only get glimpses of them.
Jojo Rabbit - what a wonderful film. Kept meaning to watch it, then after the recommends on here, grabbed a download. Superb stuff from beginning to end, which had a tear or 2 rolling down the cheek.
Switched film off to find Return To Belsen on tv. WW2 from a rather different viewpoint.
Watched a decent one last night called The Room. A hidden room where wishes come true...
We were about to watch a Bollywood film on Netflix the other night called The Body until we saw the poor imdb reviews. Turned out the Spanish original is on Amazon prime so we watched that instead. A really gripping thriller, we're going to give one of the director's other films (the invisible guest) a go tonight.
I watched Chinatown last night and thought it was excellent. It's a long way from being a new film but had somehow passed me by until now.
Zombieland series were both pretty good, 1st one more so IMO. Disengage brain bit of a giggle type films.
Just watched Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time and I really enjoyed it.
err, so where are people getting JoJoRabbit from? Or shouldn't I ask.
EDIT: technical error saving this post, trying again
Started watching BlacKkKlansman last night. Pretty bloody good. Based on the true story of a black cop going undercover to expose the KKK in the 70s. You may wonder how a black dude can achieve that …
Is that on one of the streaming services?
If you can get it....
Color Out of Space
SF/horror..
Great visuals and genuinely pretty different from most in a crowded genre. Best film Cage has been in, in a while too.👍
Is that on one of the streaming services?
Blackklansman is rental off Youtube.
re: JoJo - as i said, a download. Can’t go into more detail, but you have to investigate. Comes out in May on dvd.
Watched 1917 last night. Awesome.
Also Shape of Water. Saw it at the cinema last year and thought it was excellent but daughter wanted to watch it so watched it last week.
Already got it on DVD somewhere but Interstellar on one of the movie channels last night. Love that film.
^^ Interstellar.
Absolutely incredible film. One of my top 3 ever I think.
Is that on one of the streaming services?
We’re watching it on Now TV Sky Cinema.
Watched a lot of mediocre/average stuff lately. Of the ones that I didn't fall asleep through:
I Am Mother
Mother
Prospect
Joker
The Lighthouse
Paradise Hills (A missed opportunity. The reveal and ending should have been much darker and unpalatable without the silly fairy tale villain, Buffy like teen series feel, shame)
Will be watching:
Tigers Are Not Afraid
Midsommar
Inheritance
Greener Grass
Rojo
The Cave
Best recentish comedy series IMO is Motherland.
Just watched The Invisible Man. Absolutely brilliant
The Nightingale
You can pay to view on YouTube. Amazing film, but hard to watch at times.
The Professor and the Madman.
Who'd have thought a film about writing a dictionary could have been so captivating.
One of those where I immediately had to look up the story to verify its authenticity once the credits started rolling. Would love to know more about the actual evernts.
Colour out of soace-isnt that lovecraft?
Interested
We watched the Handmaiden the other night, Korean/Japanese reselling of Fingersmith, was excellent !
Terminator Dark Fate.
The internet said it was all woke and PC but I really enjoyed it. Sarah Connor’s entrance was awesome, the de-aging CGI worked very well, Carl talking about his curtains got me laughing.
The only bit that bothered me was how obnoxious the augmented lesbian was, especially after Sarah saved both their lives with ease. But she did the decent thing in the end so I won’t hold it against her.
If you want to watch a film with a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the classic Local Hero is on All 4 just now.
The best film I’ve seen recently, with a shadow of a doubt, is Pedro Almodóvar’s Dolors y Gloria (Pain & Glory). I’m a big fan of almodóvars any ways but this is just so human... I’d also recommend his Tie me up! tie me down!, Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Julieta, Al about my mother and (especially) Volver.
I picked up quite a few things in an end of year round up (inc Midsomer) but 5he standout for me was Roma. I really need to see that on something other than a MacBook screen...
For fans of pretty girl kick ass I enjoyed Columbiana (featuring the green woman from Guardians of the Galaxy). Absolute pish, entertainment.
Oh, I also enjoyed Avengers Assemble...
Another firm favourite of mine is Arrival. Watched it heaps of times...
My favourite girl kick ass film is Haywire, the fights look brutal.
Quarantine 2
standout for me was Roma. I really need to see that on something other than a MacBook screen…
Could you really sit through that again? I didn’t make one viewing without ffwding through most of it.
TV not film but Friday Night Diner - Series 3 Episode 5 - The Piano.
the augmented lesbian
I'd watch that. Is it on Netflix?
Could you really sit through that again
Once my hdmi cable arrives I’ll be sure to let you know.
There’s more chance of me rewatching Roma than Midsomer, people with different taste. Who knew, eh?
The guilty on Netfix was pretty enagaging for quite a simple idea
Rewatched Logan last night. Forgot how good it was. I know it’ll probably be hated by most because it’s a superhero movie, but I think it’s brilliant. A classic hero’s journey/western/samurai movie pulled off spectacularly well.
Rewatched History of Violence last night, forgot what a good film it is.
Just watched Fighting with my Family. Typical low key British stuff, but good story and I'll admit to blubbing my way through it. Think I'm a bit sensitive at the moment 😭
Just watched Independence Day (the first one) and had forgotten what a great film it was at the time (huge plot holes accepted.) I remember seeing it on release and I think it was the first thing I’d seen Will Smith in.
I won’t bother eith ID Resurgence again though.
funkmasterp

Totally. A genuinely great film that just happens to have superheroes in it.
I watched Jexi on Amazon last night.
It didn't half make me laugh. Very welcome that was too
We watched Terminator Dark Fate last night. It was just the right kind of mindless action nonsense that we were looking for to accompany a Bank Holiday takeaway.
And if people are complaining it's too 'woke' because it has strong female lead characters, then, well, that's their problem.
And, unless I missed something, just cos she's got short hair doesn't make her a lesbian.
Yes, fighting with my family is excellent.
One of the best British comedies I've seen in years.
Can't believe no-one has mentioned the "Hot Tub Time Machine yet?" So bad it's not even good, its even worse than bad.
If you want a crass comedy that works then check out "Twin Town". Like Monty Python, generations of Welsh people can recite random lines from the film to fit most situations. Who can forget the response to Fatty falling off the ladder.
Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but "The Chaser" is one of those films I happened upon by accident, had never heard of, but was gripped from start to finish. It is a dark Korean thriller and definitely worth a watch if you like a grim/violent who-dunnit film.
Totally. A genuinely great film that just happens to have superheroes in it.
Agreed. Lots of themes you don't generally find as part of a superhero movie, with superb performances from Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman.
It's a shame that knowing some of the background of the characters is helpful, as opposed to it being a standalone film.
"Life Itself" on Now tv/Sky.
Really well put together movie. Don't want to spoil it by saying too much here but well worth watching.
hot tub time machine is ace! the sequel was a let down tho...
Just watched The Invisible Man. Absolutely brilliant
I went in to it with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. A really great little film. Agree on fighting with my family too and glad to see some love for Logan.
It wasn't Knives Out that's for sure. Was expecting big things after decent reviews - bored me rigid.
Boss! The plane....!
Well one of the benefits of a career as a reviewer of stuff for a tiny newspaper group is that some people don't know the group closed and you still get review downloads of stuff and samples.
This came out of the blue for tonight. It could be in this thread but I can't guarantee it shouldn't be in the other...
https://www.imdb.com/video/vi3638345497?ref_=tt_pv_vi_aiv_2
I could watch it just for having Maggie Q in it.
True. Massively underused in Operation Endgame.
'The Train to Busan', a surprisingly good Korean zombie movie.
Saw Goldmember for the first time since it was released. Laughed a lot and wondered why Myers gave up doing stuff like that. Maybe the Shrek money is too easy.
I watched and thoroughly enjoyed Blinded By The Light on Amazon last night. It doesn't develop the characters much outside of the central one, but the story is good. It's a shame though, I'm not sure my wife would be able to enjoy it as the racism bits will ring so familiar to her childhood.
The Battleship Island (also on prime) is just bloody fantastic. How Korean cinema manages to make films so bleak and harrowing and yet still put enough humour in to make you giggle occasionally astounds me. Someone mentioned The Chaser further up the thread, that's another fine example.
'Skin' on amazon is brilliant. Jamie Bell is outstanding playing a white supremacist.True story and hard to watch in parts. The story does sound very similiar to American History X but its probably a better film overall.
just watched " the chaser" after a couple of reccommends on this thread.
thought it was very good
Just watched 'London has fallen' on Prime tonight with low expectations TBH, most will hate it no doubt but I really liked it..some iffy CGI but proper brain out 90's style 'Good guy makes wise cracks while killing bad guys, everything blows up' kinda fun.
Nerve.
just brilliant, one of the best films I’ve seen in ages.
sucker punch
very odd..obviously bought the CGI from other productions but a very enjoyable hour and a bit of fantasy cartoon type weirdness!
Just watched The sense of an ending on BBC2 best film I have seen for ages
I recently watched Kajaki on Netflix. I was ready to switch it off after the first few minutes, all seemed a bit macho bollocks and wooden acting but I'm glad I stayed with it. The sense of fear and panic captured in the scenes in the minefield were as good as in any war film I've seen, really brought home that that courage is being shit scared and somehow still being able to function.
We watched Yesterday last night - a Brit/Danny Boyle fie about a pub singer who wakes up from an accident and he's the only one that know about the Beatles. Really rather good with the exception of Ed Sheeran's poor acting.
Watched Sicario last night - well worth a couple of hours of your time.
Great film. I think the second one is even better.
The Lighthouse (with William Dafoe) recommended further up was brilliant. WT actual F type of brilliant 🙂
How have I never seen Training Day before?? Always had it down as some naff action/cop movie, but it’s brilliant. Makes me wonder how many other films over the last 20 years I’ve dismissed and are actually worth watching!
Yeah, Training Day is great 👍
Watched The Platform last night - it had hints of being a great movie but was ultimately, a turd.
2/10
Few of these.....

Then:
136stu if you like Sicario watch the second one Sicario Day of the Soldado it's just as good.
Anal Invaders 7, it wasn't not as good as Anal invaders 6
How have I never seen Training Day before?? Always had it down as some naff action/cop movie, but it’s brilliant. Makes me wonder how many other films over the last 20 years I’ve dismissed and are actually worth watching!
I have never seen a Denzel Washington film I didn't enjoy.
I watched Blinded By The Light the other evening, and it was, well, meh.
Hannah Montana - The Movie
In fairness, it's the only movie I've watched lately!
The Lighthouse (with William Dafoe) recommended further up was brilliant. WT actual F type of brilliant
I have no idea what the **** I have just watched. WTAF is right, not sure about the brilliant bit.
I have never seen a Denzel Washington film I didn’t enjoy.
Massive plus one.
We watched Yesterday last night – a Brit/Danny Boyle fie about a pub singer who wakes up from an accident and he’s the only one that know about the Beatles. Really rather good with the exception of Ed Sheeran’s poor acting.
Love a Danny Boyle movie, love the idea of the movie but Beatles music makes my ears bleed so can’t bring myself to watch it unfortunately
I have never seen a Denzel Washington film I didn’t enjoy.
Trying to think of one and drawing a blank. Watched the Equaliser again the other night. Setting the finale in a hardware store was a stroke of genius.
Just watched The Postcard Killer. Borderline tosh. 5/10.
*requests mods to remove "best" from thread subject*
Åhh, apologies. I should have posted this on the sister thread 😋
Whatever you watch https://www.jus****ch.com/uk is a flippin useful way of fathoming out where to find it.
Amores Peros is on amazon.
Watch it.
