No, not an executive trolley rucksack case.

I need one from me, one from the kids.  My ideas so far which can include joint contributions from the in-laws:

a) New Car - VERY expensive plus she's a "I don't car about cars person", although she's never owned her own car under her name.   Although, is that the same as "don't buy me anything for Vals day"?

b) iGifts - she's an Apple fan, ONLY has an iPhone6, browse on a struggling 2008 MacBook, and has a 1st Gen iPad - thing is, these get out of date

c) An experience - skydiving? What else?

Ideas please...?

Something unique, thoughtful that will be kept for a long time.

Piece of art maybe from somebody local etc.

Hard to say when we have no idea of interests, but...

Diamonds.

iPad (the new one that can use a pencil if she so desires)

Personal Shopping trip with budget to go with it + dinner + show + make a day/weekend out of it.

City Breaks / Holidays always go down well, which is almost ironic I suppose...

Choose a destination she'd like.

I took Mrs Weeksy to Maranello to drive a hurracan for the day, we then did 2 weeks at lake Iseo.

When we got home I'd bought her a Yamaha yzf-r1.

Delvaux handbag. Or coke and hookers

mrs Kilo took me to Paris for my birthday the weekend before last. How we enjoyed being tear gassed and the explosions outside our hotel from burning scooters 🙂

if you're married, try an eternity ring

if you're a family, try a really nice locket with pics and stuff in it

boob jobs are good but with the current anti-plastic movement in full swing, you might be better off with a fur coat

Collect up pics of the kids and make a photo album. I use the extra large 30x30cm linen covered albums from Bonusprint and give the Mrs one every Christmas, always works a treat.

On a serious note - an experience.

For the cost of a new car, you could take your other half somewhere truly unforgettable - the Himalayas, the Galapagos Islands, Hokkaido - Japan, Palawan - something daft like the island off New Zealand where the flightless Kakapo parrots are.

Basically, go and do something a bit out there if you have that kind of money.

I have it on good authority that Crapfone Whorehouse are about to do a cracking deal on the iPhone X to get rid of old stock. £42/month, 50Gb data and a free 6S. The 6S can be sold to cover a weekend away. I can't remember if it's tomorrow or Thursday, but I'll ask my mate later if you're interested.

I ready that as Scrotum, which might have been a good call.  Is there such a thing as a Scrotal lift?

Go that covered, sharing a luxury pad in Barbados with the In Laws in August.  Its part of the norm (Mrs K is Bajan), to visit every few years but the luxury dwelling is the treat.  The pressie needs to be personal.

She doesn't really wear much jewellery.  I'm thinking the inlaws can get her a phone/MacBook Air.

As I get older I go for memories over stuff. I can buy stuff any time I want. I actually can't remember what I got my wife for a special birthday, and vice versa. But I can remember the cool stuff we've done (last year we went to Lapland for xmas, it was incredible)

I'm also of the view that somewhere / some experience is better than another 'thing'.

Luxury accommodation and open canoe decent and distillery tour of the Spey for example.

Day away at a gourmet chef cook school.

My wife asked for time, so I based all her presents around that. We had a weekend away together without the kids, time at a festival with friends and family and I managed to find a platinum Victorian cocktail watch which she loves.

Yeah, agree, not stuff, time and an experience. No one teaches old age and looks back on possessions.

Was Mrs Nobeers 40th this year, booked a really nice hotel on our favourite island. She adores the highest summit on said island, and is always trying to get her friends to go over and climb it with her.

Anyway, I got her to the ferry terminal on the 2nd day we were there under the belief we were meeting her brother to climb said mountain.

I had arranged all her family, mum n dad etc, all her good friends, and her workies too, to come off the ferry, she reckons it was possibly her best day ever.

I carried a 35l pack with 4 bottles of bubbly, beers, gin etc, all mixers, ice packs and glasses to the top, and we toasted her birthday on a beautiful sunny day.

It was awesome. 😊

I asked one of my wife's friends, and she said my wife would love the Chippendales.

I was surprised. My wife had never shown any interest in antique chairs previously, and sure enough when she unwrapped them she had a face like thunder.

So don't rely on your wife's friends knowing what she likes... 🙂

Troll beads or pandora. Let the kids choose one each that mean something to them. Always personal and will keep you in present ideas for a few years to come.

Buy a decent bracelet for the beads from yourself.

Like many have said an experience; something that you can both look back on with fondness when she's 70.

It could be a romantic weekend away just the two of you, or a get together with all her (and your) nearest and dearest. Or the Chippendales! If it's something material make it something 'unnecessary' that she'd never buy for herself (and price isn't really the point).

FWIW, I'd take my wife to Barcelona and get a photo album with lots of happy memories from when I first knew her till now

b) iGifts – she’s an Apple fan, ONLY has an iPhone6, browse on a struggling 2008 MacBook, and has a 1st Gen iPad – thing is, these get out of date

This sounds the obvious choice to me. Sure tech gets out dated but the Apple stuff is generally good for 3-5 years minimum, you even state she's using a 10 year old model laptop! Replacing the first gen iPad would be my starting point and she can switch to browsing on the replacement, could even splash out and get her a big screen iPad Pro and the kids could get her the pencil or a case/keyboard.

Nah, don't get her a phone. You'll be replacing it again in 4-5 years time, so it's hardly something special for her 40th. I'd take her somewhere, ideally somewhere that you don't particularly fancy going and a) she does and b) she knows you don't.

And send flowers to her at work on the day itself.

I hope not as I've bought my wife a new phone for xmas 😆

I'm not expecting it to be a particularly memorable gift, but it's something she wants and she hasn't had a new phone for quite a few years.

For apple stuff, you used to be able to get engraving on some things if you bought them from apple.co.uk - I got my sister an engraved shuffle.

It'll still go out of date, but it makes it a bit more special for a big birthday

Just checked - they still do it on iPods and iPads

Buy a decent bracelet for the beads from yourself.

Until the year she snaps after having endured a series of dull and uninspired presents and says-

"I never understood why you bought it in the first place and why do you keep on buying extra stuff for it? Can you not think of anything else that I might prefer instead of something that's a basically useless and lazy present?"

Don't just buy stuff OP, go somewhere nice or do something cool that will be remembered by both/all of you. I got my OH a speedway experience day for his 40th and for mine we did a DH race up in Scotland and made a long weekend of it 🙂 Obviously your OH's tastes might be different to mine so an entry for a DH race in Scotland probably isn't a good idea for a present unless she's really into surprises 😆

Venice ? Get an afternoon flight , then a moonlight  transfer  to an eye wateringly expensive hotel on a Riva powerboat up to a moorings light up with thousands of fairy lights

Trip to the Opera , after shopping to buy her an eye wateringly expensive frock obv's

Guided  tour maybe for a few hours then hire a car ( convertable peugeot 404 if its warm ) and get out into the  countryside proper or coastal road . Pic nic then posh meal at another hotel., head scarf and sunnies so she can feel like  holywood starlet  Grace Kelly , maybe a Ferrari for the full experience

I bought Mrs Rusher4 a days rallying experience at Silverstone. To begin with she was the slowest driver in the group of twenty something blokes. By the end of the day she was the fastest and won the prize of a model rally car and a ride in a mental MK1 Escort (4 wheels in the air).

She still thinks it's the best pressie ever.

In advance of my 40th, husband remembered I'd expressed an interest in a bike magazine feature a couple of years earlier and suggested we look into it ourselves.  Ended up with us taking a three-week guided trip cycling from St. Malo to Nice (he paid).  Best trip ever 🙂

Some great options in here thanks.   I’m thinking an iPad or phone comes from the kids / in laws and I’m having a think  about an experience she both likes and be surprised by.

She did air acrobatics for her 30th, has a Swiss watch as a wedding present, doesn’t do bikes.   I need to get my thinking cap on!

An experience trumps material stuff if she's not materialistic. Finding the right one is the hard bit.

A mate went to Egypt and went up Mount Sinai. Watched the sun rise on the summit. He said it was amazing and really emotional after the effort of walking up there. His wife did it was the best thing she'd ever done

How about a learn to sea-kayak weekend course?

Or maybe 40 small things across the year?
