They'll only matter when Brexit gets cancelled, until then it's just a special interest club for arseholes

It is an excellent result. A truly honourable man with excellent distinguished service for his country twice, Army and Police. It is a result I am sure will return UKIP to the fastest growing political party in the U.K.

Henry Bolton. <Al Murray> Ah, a fine English name that; jolly good bulldog stock. He’ll make the country great again! </Al Murray>

An immigrant and former Lib Deb man, odd choice for a UKIP leader, maybe they’re going to swing to the left now. 😉

Well the party voted the bookies favourite Anne Marie Waters into second. UKIP has a better understanding of its role and standing in U.K. Politics. It is now in a position to build on the solid foundation left by Mr F and under Henry Bolton come together for the good of the country and ensure the will of the country is delivered. The internal disagreements will be resolved under Henry Bolton and he is the man to unite the party and build a party ready to takes it place as a main UK political force. Labour talk about being ready to Govern .... with the new leadership of UKIP Labour will not be the party of opposition.

Don’t you need some MPs to be the opposition?

Is he related to Ramsey? Would seem a good fit for UKIP.

Labour will not be the party of opposition.

genesiscore502011; I think you are wrong, I fervently hope you are wrong, but I can no longer find your bizarre jingoistic optimism as ridiculous as once I could have; these are strange and turbulent times.

"these are strange and turbulent times"

Just playing up on it really-took it toooooo far after my first post.

Apologies all round - as you were

I have never heard of him (H Bolton) until I read the BBC article tonight.

This thread is a shining example of what happens when a political party becomes irrelevant.

It runs out of juice. Spent. Deflated.

Meanwhile, we have a marginal Tory government in Parliament trying to turn fringe politics into the mainstream and they're losing credibility by the hour.

I dunno. I just reread the first couple of pages of the Corbyn and Trump threads for a bit of context... this is the time of strange things happening.

Are they even a party now?

Just assumed they meet up for a beer and kebab occasionally on a Saturday night?

A social club for d***s basically.

They were never really a viable party, unfortunately David Cameron seemed to think they were.

Unfortunately there was a period when they were popular enough to draw substantial votes away from the Tories (and Labour!). As much as I despise Cameron for pandering to the loony right I can understand the predicament he was in

Probably the only time I will do this.

Yes, and how many MPs did they have at that time - 1

But they had a huge (12.6%) share of the vote, quirk of the FPTP system.
