In front of me & the Mrs at the '10 items or less' checkout. This woman puts a banana skin on the conveyor & says. 'oh, he's had a banana as well'.
Cos she doesn't know that bananas are sold by weight & not by 'per banana'.
So if you fancy a free banana from Morrisons, eat one on the way round while your'e shopping & chuck the skin on the conveyor!
Lots of supermarkets offer free fruit to kids, Tesco certainly, maybe Morrison’s too, maybe that?
OK, she may be a bit thick but she's honest and encouraging her kid to eat fruit and not sweets/crisps. Two out of three ain't bad.
My kids do this a lot, but usually out of a packaged bag of fruit, not loose stuff. Not much loose stuff in Aldi, before I'm blamed for the plastic in the sea.

I think they came bottom in a recent list of eco credentials for supermarkets so you are killing baby robins by even going there.
As for the op, I'd be fuming.10 items or less?! Although I suppose a mostly eaten banana is less than a whole one.
As for the op, I’d be fuming.10 items or less?!
Often quoted by pendants, but it's not wrong.
I used to keep the twins quiet feeding them grapes round Morrisons... Always from a pre-packed/ priced box, always put the empty box on the till. It was a lottery whether I got charged!

I thought they'd done away with 10 item or less tills in favour of self service?
Both the Tesco and Morrisons in Skipton offer free fruit so jobs a good ‘un. Number 2 knows where they are and shouts nana repeatedly until she is provided with one.
Child eats fruit. That’s a bad thing? Next time stick a quid in the charity box to cover it if it worries you.
Child eats fruit. That’s a bad thing? Next time stick a quid in the charity box to cover it if it worries you.
Doesn't 'worry' me in the least pal, but maybe the Ma shouldv'e stuck a quid in the charidee box? Maybe I'll help myself to a few loose olives next time I'm round there but take an empty carton & say 'here, weigh this, I've had a few olives on my way round the shop'
🙂
Waitrose get it right.

Waitrose get it right.
Not really. There are plenty of examples of "less" being used with count nouns.
Not much loose stuff in Aldi, before I’m blamed for the plastic in the sea.
Agree it is the only bad thing about Aldi. However they have starting selling some fruit and veg loose and it's per item not weight so that would the OPs example
Maybe I’ll help myself to a few loose olives next time I’m round there but take an empty carton & say ‘here, weigh this, I’ve had a few olives on my way round the shop
Think bigger, wine glasses, cork screw, few bottles of vino, set up a table in an aisle, make the whole shopping experience more enjoyable, as long as it's an empty container when you reach the till it's all good 🙂
Waitrose get it right.
Yeah, but your average Morrisons customer isn't going to understand that...

Is Britain the only country on Earth with a class based Supermarket hiarcy? 🙄
****ing “average Morrison’s customer” - they’re like the Everyman supermarket of choice, now ASDA, that’s a muppets paradise.
I have never set foot in a Waitrose. Now I’ve said that I am going to try to never do so.
On topic, hasn’t this always happened, although in the 80s my mum let me eat kit kits kats and other chocolate ( yeah, I know you don’t buy them by the pound). I think the till opporater can enter items of fruit individually without weight if needed.
I have never set foot in a Waitrose. Now I’ve said that I am going to try to never do so.
*swoon*
but, err, why?
I have never lived near one until they opened a new supermarket in town and I see no reason to go there over Asda and Morrison’s.
I will try not to venture in as I have nothing better to do, having made it half way (hopefully).
Should have

I must be old. When I was a child, people didn't consume things before they'd actually paid for them and children were behaved in supermarkets through discipline rather than bribery or pacification.
Yeah, but your average Morrisons customer isn’t going to give a shit about that…
FTFY.
I must be old
You can't be that old. When I was a child we didn't have supermarkets.
This is how it starts. Next the child will be shoplifting, then it’ll be stealing other children’s faces. Never happened in my day blah, blah, something about the fall of society mumble mumble.
Is that Waitrose calendar for real?
Just been caught by MrsH googling that calendar 😋
I have never set foot in a Waitrose.
You are missing out. They sell a lot of better quality items where quality counts, i.e. balsamic vinegar.
The really good thing about Waitrose is that whatever time you go there are about 10% the number of people in there than one of the major supermarkets.
Ma shouldv’e stuck a quid in the charidee box?
OP to out of touch to even know what a banana costs shocker!!!
The really good thing about Waitrose is that whatever time you go there are about 10% the number of people in there than one of the major supermarkets.
Yea, but I can never shake the feeling that its like a cut price version of Booths.
It must be how Tesco shoppers feel when they accidentally end up in Morrison's.
The sign is just missing a word, "10 items more or less"
Just so you know, people who eat/feed their kids food in the supermarket that they haven't paid for are thieves 🙂
And before you throw in the 'restaurant' model. I'll point out it's not a restaurant, it's a shop. When I'm ruler of the world the punishment would be worst than if they'd just walked out of the shop with it.
Yea, but I can never shake the feeling that its like a cut price version of Booths
Pmsl.
Or that farm shop of a motorway services at Shap...
I assume the op must have been out shopping for a life. Let's hope he found one.
The fact that he's posting about this on the internet makes me think he's still looking....
I have never set foot in a Waitrose.
Everyone knows that Waitrose is only there to keep the riff-raff out of M&S.
When I’m ruler of the world the punishment would be worst than if they’d just walked out of the shop with it.
If if I rule before you I’ll be ‘taking care of’ those who use worst instead of worse and would instead of will😉
You are missing out. They sell a lot of better quality items where quality counts, i.e. balsamic vinegar.
I will send Mrs Sims in , what brand? Their own? Any others they do better than the others?

I'll stick with Aldi.

Obviously never been to the one in Harrogate then. I'm always surprised that for a place that wants to be posh they don't seem to spend much money making the shops look posh. They lag behind Booths or M&S for sure.
I have never set foot in a Waitrose. Now I’ve said that I am going to try to never do so
Not even for the free coffee? ! 😮
(yeah, I know you have to buy something now).
My kids do this a lot, but usually out of a packaged bag of fruit, not loose stuff
In my day, a good clip round the ear would put an end to kids grabbing fruit/sweets. Actually I don't recall ever wanting to grab some fruit or knew any other kid who'd want to.
will send Mrs Sims in , what brand? Their own?
The vinegar I am currently using is Waitrose own brand in a square/cube bottle. Excellent taste and syrupy (unlike the watery stuff) Also reduced from £15 to £10 if via Ocado.
I’ll stick with Aldi.
Good for you, not everyone want choices and nice quality food.
f if I rule before you I’ll be ‘taking care of’ those who use worst instead of worse and would instead of will
When I'm ruler pedants will be first up against the wall. 🙂

Gadzooks. So much fail in that sentence.
Good for you, not everyone want choices and nice quality food.
Exactly so they shop at Waitrose believing expensive means better.
I must be old. When I was a child, people didn’t consume things before they’d actually paid for them and children were behaved in supermarkets through discipline rather than bribery or pacification.
You might be old, but it’s your terrible memory that makes you think like that, rather than your age directly.
And there weren’t any supermarkets when I was a kid, but I didn’t let that stop me behaving like a little shit in normal shops.
I don’t see that the kid was being disobedient. They were given a banana. They ate it. The parent tried to pay for it.
Exactly what is wrong with this situation?
kid eats well
mother is honest

I've always assumed Balsamic Vinegar was like washing up liquid.
There's no functional reason why washing up liquid needs to produce bubbles, or come in 500ml/1000ml bottles, or be viscous (or even a liquid). But people associate viscosity with quality, and don't like to think that the amount of actual chemicals in washing up liquid is just a tiny fraction of the volume (the rest is thickened water).
Balsamic Vinegar is the same.
Ocado only actually sell one real balsamic vinegar, and it's £55 for 100ml! It's not the stuff bought by middle classes to slosh on their sweet potato chips and dip a bit of sourdough ciabatta in (guilty).
Everything else is a mix of wine vinegar, grape must and thickeners and is labeled as "Balsamic vinegar of Modena" (usually in Italian to make it sound posh), or "Balsamic Condiment" if it's made elsewhere.
That's not to say some bottles aren't better than others, but it's viscosity is basically down to how much cornflour and guar gum they added, nothing to do with quality or taste.
Don't shatter his illusion.
Exactly so they shop at Waitrose believing expensive means better.
Nope, I have done the Aldi / Lidl thing and gave up on it as most of what they sell is crap. It appears cheap until you realise you haven't managed to buy enough to make any decent meals from and have to go to another supermarket where they actually sell all the stuff you need.
Expensive doesn't mean better, better means better
That’s not to say some bottles aren’t better than others,
Yes, and I buy the ones that taste nicer.
Yes, and I buy the ones that taste nicer.
You also bothered to mention:
Waitrose own brand
Square/cube bottle
Syrupy
Perceived discount of buying it via Ocado
There's a lot of stuff going on there to convince you of it's quality. Most people have heard of "the Pepsi challenge", but you can even do the same thing with red and white wine. Most people can't tell the difference when blindfold (and remember that 50% of people would get that test right just by guessing), but just like being an above average driver, most people self report that they definitely could tell real Coke form Pepsi, tell red from white and are definitely and above average driver.
Waitrose - just like any other supermarket only dearer.
From personal experience Tesco are the worst for food quality, but our local huge place (Burnley) is great for household stuff, good pharmacy, games, books and electricals.
Asda much better for food and the big ones (Rawtenstall) are great for games, books etc.
Morrisons - pointless but food very good.
Sainsburys - clothes. Food ok.
Waitrose - ok, spendy.
Booths - upmarket Morrisons.
M&S - love the food, can be good value. Clothes have gone full Partridge.
Aldi and Lidl. Yup, love it. Just plan a few meals and buy what you need. Too much choice makes me grumpy, as it means I have to be in there longer than necessary.
I like the food quality.
But mostly because I can walk or ride my bike there and back through the park. 🙂
It appears cheap until you realise you haven’t managed to buy enough to make any decent meals from and have to go to another supermarket where they actually sell all the stuff you need.
😂😂
There’s a lot of stuff going on there to convince you of it’s quality.
Maybe to you but I just taste the different types and brands and then make a decision. The thicker and sweet tasting balsamic vinegar tastes nicer to me. Just happens that it tends to be the more expensive ones.
The cheap ones are watery and taste more vinegary. If the £3 bottle tasted as nice I would buy the £3 bottle.
Back to the OPs point, I don't drink the balsamic vinegar as I am going around the supermarket.
Morrisons – pointless but food very good.
Hard to understand your scoring system really.
A food shop that sells good food gets scored as “pointless”
I'd just be my happy my kids eaten a banana and sort out any confusion at the checkout. Because Tesco do free fruit, there's an Assocation now between being in the trolley in a shop and getting a banana!
Drac
I’ll stick with Aldi.
Exactly. There isn't one in my town sadly, but the last time I was in one, I went in for a pre-packed sandwich and some crisps and came out with a pair of rigger boots, a starter oil painting set with easel and a firemans axe.
Morrison's is great if you are in the mood for scotch eggs and pork pies, but the ones I have used seem to have used Alan Sugar computing technology with regard to the self service checkout.
I have done the Aldi / Lidl thing and gave up on it as most of what they sell is crap.
I tried to do it but I couldn't find half the stuff I went in to buy and couldn't be bothered to wait in the enormous queue to pay for the rest.
A food shop that sells good food gets scored as “pointless”
Apologies.
Food is good, but limited. Not many places, ok for emergencies but frustrating to find anything apart from basics. Good bakery, meat and fish. Variable cafes. 😶.
Problem is Aldi does this all better apart from the bakeries and the caffs.
As I live in Burnley. I'me never more than 50 feet away from a pie shop, so nothing appeals.
When Lidl opened in Tod, you could hear the cheering for miles. 🙂
I’ll admit to not knowing what Booths is - I thought Fortnums was the Supermarket Top Snob Trump.
Do M&S actually sell ‘food’ now? Every time I’ve been in they only seemed to sell microwave meals in fancy boxes for all those poor stressed out Boomers who struggle to knock up a meal in between spending their morning in the doctors and afternoons in the Post Office?
As for ‘in my day’ I working in Tesco 25 years ago, people would eat and shop all the time, as long as they gave the barcode to scan it was no biggie. Wish they would stop eating grapes though, no one cared they ate more than they paid for - that’s why the self-weigh grapes cost twice as much as the pre-weighed ones, no grapes on a heavily waxed floor are like Teflon coated ice, we’d have old ladies going over left, right and centre.
