Best film of the year. Anyone seen it and enjoyed it? 2nd year in a row Best Picture goes to a film I have no real desire to watch. Don't know much about it, but I've seen a fishy bloke which looks a bit silly.

Good to see Three Billboards get some awards. And Get Out. Both superb.

And Dunkirk, Best editing, for all those dimwits who didn't get it! Ha 😉

Agreed – I cannot bring myself to want to watch it.

I did take my kids to see The Greatest Showman yesterday though – I quite enjoyed it too.

I really enjoyed it but I think it won't be to all tastes, basically if you liked his other films, Pan's Labrynth ,etc you'll like this .Each to their own .

I thought  Shape of Water was fantastic, but then I am a big del toro fan.

Don’t know much about it, but I’ve seen a fishy bloke which looks a bit silly.

It's part fairy tale and gives a nod to some classic cinema

I cannot bring myself to want to watch it.

That's the attitude, you stay in your wee bubble and watch the same old, same old.

It's one of the few recent winners that I'm looking forward to seeing!
Haven't seen Moonlight, Spotlight, 12 Years a Slave, Argo or The Artist.

+1 to Greatest Showman - hate musicals, loved this.

Since when did cinema have to be realistic? Isn't the point that you can do stuff that isn't 'real life' (although real life films also good)

I’ll catch it on Prime when it comes onto digital, can’t be any worse than Get Out.

Can’t figure out why Thor Ragnorak won nothing. I am nowhere near sophisticated enough to watch the usual Oscar winners.

A strange thing to say when you don't know me and therefore cannot possibly know if I am in a bubble or not nor know my viewing habits.

Never realised that Hellboy was a Guillermo del Toro film hence why Abe Sapien and the water creature in The Shape of Water looks the same and played Doug Jones again. I might go watch it now.

Funny, I didn't mind that. Was a "first date" situation, so maybe that helped in a 'blimey, she likes odd films too' way.

That's the attitude, over-react to someone saying they're not interested in something 😆

I went to see it few days ago, and wasn't really looking forward to it (I say this as a massive film buff) because I could see how it was going to pan out.

I was correct, despite good technicals - with Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon being very watchable - I thought it was a completely by the numbers film. Guillermo del Toro is a decent film-maker but he straddles the whole big budget thing rather uncomfortably. His last few films have been very poor, though the Shape of Water is certainly not in that class.

I didn't connect with the magic of it - it's a lightweight beauty & the beast with the usual G-D-T adult fairy tale 'shock' moments.

I thought Michael Shannon's bad guy despite being well played was such a well trodden villain.

Sure there are smart things in there about race and the nature of who we love but for me this film ultimately sits alongside Titanic in that it doesn't make sense why it was particularly Oscar worthy. Certainly over Three Billboards.

Girlfriend loved it.

As for Birdman, at least it bought something interesting and challenging to the screen.

Watched it. The shape of bollocks would be a better title. Derivative.

Went into it with an open mind but found it full of cliches, unevenly paced and overall a bit hammy. There are much better films that should have got the Oscar. Call Me By Your Name and Get Out felt much more accomplished to me for example.

I've got a feeling that would make uncomfortable viewing.

That title is already taken, if a quick PirateBay search is any guide.

The Oscars always show a clear division between the more worthy, intelligent and meaningful films the Academy like to promote, and films the money-spending public actually go to see, the remark about Black Panther making more money in two weeks than all of the Oscar winners put together will isn’t far off the mark.

Seriously chuffed to see The Silent Child get an Oscar, though, little Maisy is such a natural on screen, and having a profoundly deaf lead, and signing used throughout can only help open up deafness to wider acceptance, it’s already being debated by parliament that BSL should be included in the national curriculum.

One dimensional charactors,  a plot from a youtube short and punctuated with bizarre bean flicking scenes.  Got bored halfway though, never bothered to watch the rest. I at least finished Birdman.

Big thumbs up for Rachel Shenton too.

Hollyoaks to Oscar winner is no mean feat.

Another del Toro fan. I think it's a fantastic piece of cinema - using that phrase rather than 'great film' quite deliberately. I'm a sucker for directors who are clearly in love with the idea of cinema (Tarantino, Luhrmann, etc.) and let that love show in their films. Yes, it's not overly original, a bit lightweight at times, and I understand the whole magic realism schtick might not be everyone's cup of tea but I love the whole 'dark Disney' vibe.

I really like the fact that a film that isn't particularly serious, arty, or worthy (although I do think it's thoughts about isolation and need were handled pretty well given that it's a fairy tale) has won best film and best director.

My only real criticism remains how obvious the ending (in terms of what happens physically to the main character) was right from the opening scene.

On a work trip at the mo and just got off a plane after watching Darkest Hour and 3 billboards. Darkest hour was very good but was disappointed with 3 billboards. the usual Oscar hype. Yes, a great cast and very well acted but just didn't float my boat. Wont give away any spoilers but it broke one of my golden rules of any film. Would never say don't watch it because these things are subjective but not lived upto the hype in my opinion, but if any film is going to get hyped up it  may as well be a british film

Might catch shape of water on the next leg, i'll see what mood I'm in and if I can't sleep, there is not much else that tickles my fancy that I've not already seen.

I have a rule of thumb when it comes to films - if its oscar nominated then its usually sh!t. If its an oscar winner its definitely sh!t.

IMO - of course

Bit stupid that really, lots of superb films have been nominated and won.

From what I hear its not very original, gifted person /animal is taken advantage of by the powers that be, but someone bonds with it and  tries to save the day with predictable consequences?

Same sub plot as star trek discovery TV series and several other films before that.

That said I really liked pans laberinth, do I'll certainly watch this.

I liked it. Not nearly as powerful or complex as Pans labyrinth but a nice fable beautifully shot and well acted. Unfortunately all the Oscar hype just builds it up to something more than it needs to be. The whole oscar thing is bollox and unnecessary these days.

He hasn't made anything exceptional since Pan's Labyrinth. His films are always visually striking, but apart from the way it looked and Richard Jenkins' performance, there really wasn't much to recommend about it.
