Easier to hide in custard.
*US officer madly jabbing self destruct button to no effect*
and how do you catch a drone? A f*** off big butterfly net?
Probably to do with the materials used in its construction. don't want to interfere with the RAM (radar attenuating materials). Would also hazard a guess it's grey but under sodium lighting in a hanger somewhere.
its cool iran can use it to build their own stealth bomber and drop nukes on everyone 😉
I dont think its a real one.
Although they could have done a swap
Where's the real one ?

Poor mamhoud wanted the above
He's Gutted to find out the sticker kit is missing
That looks nothing like a drone
more of a miniaturised B1!!!
Must resist pedantic geekery but can't...
You mean miniaturised B2
That looks nothing like a drone
I can see someone getting the sack over that.
Because people on the ground would never see it from that side? If a plane were above it and looking down on it maybe it blends in better in this colour?
Edit: Hmm, just seen it's yellow all over, that's my idea out the window.
These aren't the drones you're looking for.
If a plane were above it and looking down on it maybe it blends in better in this colour?
Yellow for Iranian desert sand innit ?
How high do they fly btw ?
Me? I'd build some self-destruct mechanism into my drones. It loses contact with mother..... BOOM. Bet the Americans did too.

Operating ceiling of around 50,000ft.

😛
So easily spotted by a plane patrolling at 50,000 plus feet then. Unless they paint them yellow of course.
Only if they're not flying in custard.
It would be pretty impressive and majorly embarrassing for the US if, from what it said on the BBC, that the Iranians managed to take over and land the drone. It does appear, from what we can see, fairly undamaged.
I suspect the only thing the Iranian Airforce have that would operate over 50,000ft would be those F-14 the yanks sold them years ago :irony:
Don't trifle with the US.
I'm discustard with that crikey.

Or the Mig-29s the Russians sold them...

That's a bit like saying that there was "hell on*" after the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand!
*Hell on might be a Sunderland phrase, if it is, it mean's quite a bit of bother.

An actual RQ-170 in Kandahar.
The colour really does look odd. UAV's are, like all US combat jets, painted in Air Superiority Grey, because it's a low contrast colour that blends well with haze and cloud. There's no need to use any kind of camo colour. We painted our jets pink during the first Gulf war, because they were flying low level missions, and pink is the best colour against sand.
That RQ-170 looks a bit fishy, the wings are taped on, and there's a wierd mesh across the jet intake, plus there are no visible markings. The yanks aircraft all have national markings in a darker shade of grey, like ours do, and other nations using AS Grey, Canadians for example.
They might have been better off flying these:

Oooops
I was obviously wrong....on both counts.
I was right a plane geek in my teens...
Me? I'd build some self-destruct mechanism into my drones. It loses contact with mother..... BOOM. Bet the Americans did too.
you missed out .... and then outsource it to the lowest bidder and wonder why it doesn't work
Self destruct is a nice plan, but what happens if you find a way to interrupt comms via satellite (dazzling it perhaps)? You'd then have a lot of hardware thinking it had lost contact and self destructing...
Also, _if_ it was hacked, it hadn't lost comms with mother. It just had a new mother.
A british spy plane (sometime ago).
Sponsored by Breakthrough Breast Cancer...
That is a very pink Spit, Desert Storm colours were a bit dustier looking, I think.

A bit more yellowey.

The rq45 (globalhawk)is completely autonomous. These rq170 may also feature an completely autonomous system as much as, its 2nd generation and obsolete already.
Thats the second one the iranians stole this year though....
Regardless of all that; what is the US doing flying spy planes over another nation without it's permission?
Light colours, seen from below, are less visible?
Or it's just a fake.
Regardless of all that; why dont the Iranians just fly drones over the US.
Given that a border is shared between the two countries, it is possible that Iranian radio waves met the drone as it was passing _just_ on the AFG side of the border and suggested, nay! Encouraged, it to cross over voluntarily.
Just a theory...
I'm sure they are not completely autonomous either. You still need to get data back and waypoints in.
Let me guess; a raid gets launched to destroy this technology (which must not fall into the wrong hands, for the sake of world peace)and it turns out they were keeping this captured drone RIGHT next to their centrifuges and enriched uranium! Who would have thought?
This whole thing is so bonkers that you'd think it must be a hoax - but then the yanks have admitted losing one...
so
- not very stealthy
- not very secure command / control / comms 😯
"what is the US doing flying spy planes over another nation without it's permission?"
If they had their permission it wouldn't be a spy plane would it! 🙄
Regardless of all that; why dont the Iranians just fly drones over the US.
Heh! Yeah, great idea... 😀
Given that a border is shared between the two countries
Last I checked, the US and Iran don't actually share a border...
So, an act of military aggression by one state toward another.
I expect the UN will intervene, as that's their role, to keep peace...
This whole thing is hilarious, and it would be made even funnier if they stuck an Ayotollah beard and turban on it and, sent it back !
(Is Iran one of those countries that doesn't let women vote ? I can never keep up - should try harder really it's my rule of thumb for splitting the good guys/bad guys)
No, that's Saudi Arabia, a nation the UK and US has strong trade links with, as they sell us their oil at a price we like.
Ah, Saudi Arabia, a nation that makes even Iran look like a progressive, liberal state....
Maybe it's all part of a bigger plan involving a schoolboy style "give me my ball back" fight?
Who's to say it's not sitting there gathering data from the 'Axis of Evil' and sending it back to 'Uncle Sam' right now?
Perhaps it's trojan horse and full of Navy Seal midgets?
It's probably not got a great deal to do with the USA anyhow that bit of gear probably belongs to the independant state based inside the US and outside the control of every law regardless of nation.
the CIA
Still, at least the Iranians have now got a load of spare parts to fix those Ipods were given by the Royal Navy.

Wrong mesh across the jet intake, even the wrong colour, you would think someone might have had the common-sense to google a picture of a RQ-170, before parading their half-arsed mock-up in front of the world's prying eyes.
Such a silly schoolboy error - these Iranians are quite frankly useless. I don't reckon they could organise a piss-up in a brewery. And nuclear weapons must be right out of their league.
Hels
Try googling 'boobquake'.
A couple of months ago Hezbollah took control and landed an Israeli drone that was over Lebanon, so i guess the iranians must have found some trick to do it.
And the weakness might be simpler than the hi-tech kit would have us believe - When NATO used drones in the former Yugoslavia for surveillance the video broadcast was unencrypted - so while the drones were flying about searching the Serbs just tuned into the frequency to watch where it was going and hide accordingly!
hels - here's a wee cheat sheet - https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/2123.html#ir
I wouldn't get too hung up by that marty - the CIA haven't a clue what's happening in Iran.
They can't even get their spy planes to come back.
See - what onehundredthidiot said about the colour - i'd believe him on that one. 😀

Obama has just called on the Iranians to return the drone. It's like the boy down the street knocking on your door and asking for the ball he's just kicked into your garden.
I saw that - rather amusing. "can we have our drone back please"
druidh - Member
Obama has just called on the Iranians to return the drone...
I'd imagine that's a prelude to or an excuse for using a big stick.
At what height above a country does that country no longer have jurisdiction over the airspace?
Can we all chuckle at the armchair experts who all decryed it a hoax based on grainy photo?
The Iranians just bought new jammers from the Russians and they also have anti-stealth tech, with that combination they may have been able to capture it.
Still can't believe the Americans didn't put a self destruct command into it!
The Americans won't ask for it back, they don't want to aggrivate the Iranians anymore than they have.
Obama has just called on the Iranians to return the drone.
As Shaun Keveny said this morning "ok, but if it comes over again, I'm putting a knife through it!"
Looks like we're building up for a spot of:
Woohooooooo!! We've not had a totally ill-advised, un-winnable war for ages. Oh.... hang on a minute
I reckon Iran could be win-able compared to most, mainly because it has an actual army that might fight, and therefore be beatable, rather than a rag-tag of idealists with no real co-ordination, and therefore no chance of surendering.
Win-able?
Hmmmmmmm Well....seeing as if the thicko yanks invade, they'll promptly bomb Tel Aviv in retaliation/provocation, who'll reply with nukes and wipe Iran off the map. If that's what you call win-able, all well and good. I suspect there could be the odd knock on repercussion, or two, though 😯
Don't forget Iraq had WMD's that could blow us up in 30minutes too.
Very true. I'm amazed we're all still alive
Is Iran one of those countries that doesn't let women vote ? I can never keep up - should try harder really it's my rule of thumb for splitting the good guys/bad guys
Bit of a mixed bag - voting is universal and many women are in professional employment (I know an Iranian coder, she works and teaches in Iran but occasionally comes over here to conferences and give lectures). There's still a lot of segregation, and the government shut down the country's only women's mag for being too controversial - it was quite political, criticised what it saw as Islam being misused to justift misogyny, and also talked about sex.
Their games industry has loads of restrictions too - they get government grants for promoting Iranian history and Islamic morals. The Sims was huge in Iran, but the sequel was banned as the government realised it allowed the player to indulge in Western corruption (flirting, shameless integration between the sexes, etc). So a studio made an Iranian version of The Sims, that promoted living virtuously.
They also have their equivalents of Call of Duty and Medal of Honour, based on real life events where the US were seen as the aggressors, or Iran as the victors. When people tell her that this is awful propaganda, she just shrugs and ask how it's different to Rambo III (evil soviets) or America's Army (used to encourage people to join the US army).
Iran is going to glow in the dark quite soon
Like the sheep in Cumbria?
Like the sheep in Cumbria?
do they come in keyring form?
It seems like a bit of a set up.
Americans not happy about glow in the dark bombs Iran are making and now they have broken another weapon they aren't allowed to own keep develop treaty.
how much will china pay iran for the drone do ya reckon?
they'll just swap it for some nukes
Apparently, the CIA have increased surveillance since somone in Tehran put an order into Amazon for this
I reckon Iran could be win-able compared to most, mainly because it has an actual army that might fight, and therefore be beatable, rather than a rag-tag of idealists with no real co-ordination, and therefore no chance of surendering.
The way it works is that the actual army fights and gets beaten, and then the remnants become a rag-tag of idealists with no real co-ordination, and therefore no chance of surendering.
