If he says it's art. It's art. Whether you appreciate it as such is purely your prerogative.

A French artist has begun an unusual artistic performance that will see him spend 13 days living inside a bear.

Bastard!

Can't people just do nice drawings, why does everything have to be performance or abstract or just plain daft?

I was going along with it until I got to [toss]"For him this act signifies a rebirth, a rite of passage, to pass from the world of the dead to that of the living"[/toss]

If it was me it would read.

"For him this act signifies a the chance to make a pile of cash whilst sitting inside a hollowed out bear"

Art, Noun: The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

yup it is, however deranged.

I'd say that this has neither.

Whether its art or not, I dont care. What I would like to know is who is paying for this?

Would I want to watch someone living inside a dead bear?...... No
Even if it was free...... Still No.

Its all a bit Big Brother and frankly we all know how shocking that program is.

So my opinion is Art=No
Attention seeking Crap=Yes

yes it's art, the person creating it has most likely been to art school and has received commission(s) to create the art, it would (one would hope) be part of a theme of work previously created and it will be presented (when complete) as a work of art in a gallery or other art context

real question is - do you like it or not? your response to this question is entirely valid, equally valid to anyone elses

who is paying for this?
more often than not, the artist themselves either by existing personal wealth or from previous sales/commissions. other options for funding are by being an artist in residence at an arts festival or charitable body (pretty rare), via the art college he's attending or by direct commission (very rare)

if he's had art works bought by charles saatchi or a select few other investors, the price of his output will rocket and he can use this as leverage to fund other stuff

I'm quite excited by this. It's quite difficult to see how it functions as regards the people who are not in the bear: we can't really empathise, as self-inflicted holidays inside a bear are something none of us really do. If we did, it would not be remarkable. So we almost have to take his word for it that the act is significant for him. Otherwise we end up simply reflecting that, once you've been a fortnight in a bear it must feel very nice to get out and stretch. So we have to freight him with all humanity's curiosity, all our expectations, fears and desires in the previously little-thought-about matter of spending a fortnight in a bear. We have to day to ourselves "this man goes into the bear so that we can know ourselves, and how we are in the bear". It seems significant, but it's hard to know what it means for us. I am thinking here of Seraphim Falls, where Pierce Brosnan jumps out of the dead horse and give sLiam Neeson a nasty fright, or of Empire Strikes Back and Solo putting Luke into the eviscerated corpse of a patrol Tauntaun to keep him warm, but also of Legeneds of the Fall and an elderly Brad Pitt punching a bear, as is his destiny. There are so many layers of meaning to unpack.

Confused - will he be walking about scaring kids and ripping their arms out, sh*tting in the woods, dancing at carnivals, doing fake survivalist programs and doing other bear type things, or just sitting in a box which happens to be made of an old bearskin? if the latter, I'd be a tad more impressed if there were some live wolves and no fences involved.

BigDummy, that's very impressive - my eyes just slid over that like the grease of a Friday kebab.

An artist's work should not be bounded by what other people define as art.

Because he did not use the term "juxtaposition" in his synopsis. It may not be able to be considered art. Then again, the piece itself is now irrelevant because the fact it's being discussed/debated here has already concreted his claim.
