Found out this week redundancies being made and my heads on the block as it were, only just come back off furlough and thought I was safe...

2 of us in my department but only provision for 1.5 jobs.

So I can either go for the full time position against my colleague who is much more experienced than me and been here long enough to need pay him off whereas I've been here less than 2 years so i won't be entitled to a pay out.

What I'm trying to find out is if my job is being made redundant and replaced by a new part time role if I apply for the full time job and "lose" against my colleague would that mean I am by default redundant and would have to apply for the part time job? Or could they still just offer me that job instead as a sort of transfer.

I am unlikely to get picked ahead of my colleague so don't want to risk losing any form of employment over going against him for the full time role if rather just accept the part time for now and find a new/additional job.

but if there is nothing to lose and I can fall back on the other position regardless then I might as well go for it, my boss (who hasn't been here long doesn't know so I asking HR but thought I'd see if anyone knew)

No doubt this is not an option, but both being 0.75 might suit the both of you. Whenever there’s talk of people reducing their hours, I cannot recall anyone regretting it.

There are two things here surely? If you have been there < two years then yes, you have fewer rights and that goes against you. They don't have to call it redundancy as they can simply let you go.

However, IF they are calling it redundancy then they have to follow the correct procedure surely? Ie, tell everyone their job is at risk, take all reasonable measures to come to a mutually agreeable solution in the circumstances etc.

Wiggles - don't assume that the "need to pay him off" is a serious part of the equation unless its a very small company. Payoffs are a restructuring cost which comes from a different line in the spreadsheet! He may be on more money, or a bit crap or a PITA and they would like to get rid of him anyway!

Like gauss - I'd be ecstatic if I could so 75% hrs for 75% salary; obviously not everyone is in that boat.

Good idea. I'd love to work a ¾ week.

Reality is, there would still be just as much work so the other ¼ would end up being overtime. Win/win really.

FWIW when there were redundancies in one of my early jobs they chose to preferentially get rid of the older ones precisely for the reasons poly mentioned.

This.

My experience of going through numerous rounds of redundancy in various companies over the years is that it's almost always used as a great opportunity to shed people they want rid of but can't justify sacking.

As others have said I would not pre-judge which one of you they want to go yet. Once the scoring system for assessing you both is published you should be able to work that out easily!

These things tend to be about money so, if you are competent to do the job and are on less money than your colleague, then you are in a good position.

I would not be hinting that I was willing to work part time as that might give them an "easy" solution.

Hope things work out for you - I have been through it and it is a shit experience.

Been through this about 7 times now and it never gets any easier. As others have said just don't assume it will be your colleague they want to keep. Keep your head held high, go for the role if you want it, and show them why they should keep you. If you don't really want it then consider it an opportunity for a fresh start. Just try to stay positive as the other option is just a bit shit 🙂

Also as has already been said, make sure you get clued up on what they are legally required to do if they state that it is redundancy. You have rights, and make sure they don't stiff you. Good Luck

In all seriousness though that's got to be tough well done for still be able to give such reasoned advice.

All depends on the company eg my wife offered unilaterally to go part time when her employer was starting to furlough people. HR passed it up the line and she got an email back from the CEO thanking her for trying to help the company conserve cash and admiring her proactive attitude. Although they declined the part time bit in the end as they're a bit old fashioned and don't really do part time....

@toby1 and @footflaps not surviving it isn’t an option, well not a good one anyway!
I had 5 redundancies while in the print industry all of which meant having to find a new company, and always led to better things. I then had 10yrs in Pharmaceuticals, and this was the biggest surprise, they shut the entire UK site down! Nobody saw that one coming and it was a massive shock, really shook me and everyone else, not ashamed to say there were tears on that occasion. But again it worked out well and also they looked after us pretty well. The last time was last year, this time in a packaging innovations role but I survived this one and got another role.
So my experience is that as bad as it can seem at the time, it can very easily turn out to be a good thing in the long run. Don’t be disheartened.

Worked at a job full time, then they decided to make job share a thing, had to have an interview for the job i had been doing for last year , and got it , job share then for about 7 months, then announced we where going to be tuped other blokes decided for redundancy i hadn't been there long enough years so just left with no pay off.

They can just tell you to go if youve been there less than 2 years, or offer part time job share working if they see that as an option, quite handy for holiday sickness cover.

Thanks for all the information and advice

Job share isn't an option given and not wanted by my colleague anyway, he is very much not "dead wood" so to speak, does way more tasks than me over and above what he is contractually required to do. I'm a bit less willing to give up my own time or do anything that I don't get paid for as don't see much reward/loyalty for it...

Which is probably going to bite me in the ass now. Don't particularly like the job that much anyway people are ok, but low paid. Problem being finding a new job wouldn't be easy as I have to take my kids to school before work, we used to spread out so he came in early and I stayed later so worked out fine, my boss knows I wouldn't be able to start any earlier even if it was just me working. Lots of other jobs advertising would require me to start earlier than I can do in the mornings...

We have both been advised of consultation period starting (10 days) and are due to be interviewed for the position, so trying to figure out the least risk option.

Well every consultation I've been through has always ended up with less people being made redundant than they expected, as they always seem to change their minds the further through the process it gets / realise they can't do without certain people / roles.

So it may not all be over yet...

Maybe need to seriously reconsider school drop off, that is going to hinder a job search. Many people have to use before and after school clubs through necessity.

Previous already dropped them off the breakfast club (free in Wales) which gives me an extra 30 minutes in the morning, but my Mrs leaves for work at 7am so there's not much else I can do. As it stands even the breakfast club Isn't even going to be on in September
