In the end a good result but it frightens me that one call to the police led to his PC and phone being investigated.

He didn't expose himself or shout sexual remarks - WTF?

I assume the reporting doesn't cover the full extent of the investigation though...

And if a schoolgirl DID say that about you, and the police decided they were concerned enough to investigate further, they wouldn't find anything illegal on your computer. I would be happy thinking the police are taking their responsibilities seriously.

Blimey. I always slow down going past schools (safety reasons)
I think I'll stick to about 85mph in future!

His behaviour wasn't exactly normal though, was it?

Perhaps the cops already had intelligence about this guy and just needed an excuse to stop him?

We dont know the facts so cant say

I'd be willing to bet that the individual in question had some form of "history" 😕

I'd guess that as he was arrested he may have been known to the police.

If he wasn't and had no previous form then i'd very worried about how easily this could happen.

So, i'm on my way home and give a cheeky wink to the attractive woman at the bus stop. The 11 year old next to her (which I haven't noticed) thinks i'm winking at her. Next thing I know the police are at my door. scary stuff!!!

Me thinks a typo in here yes??

"So If a schoolgirl says I've looked at her funny this could happen to me?"

Surely the U should be replaced with an A no???

Blimey, I really hope there was quite a bit more to this than:

He did a u-turn and drove back past them.

One of the girls was concerned about Bowkett’s behaviour so wrote down the registration number of his car on her hand and told her mother when she got home.

Police were informed through the girls’ school and Bowkett was arrested straight away. Officers seized his computer, laptop and mobile phone.

Good result in the end, but personally I'd rather not be arrested on suspicion of being a nonce based on a U-turn and a hunch!

True, but sadly that sh*t sticks, regardless of the official findings.

i.e. would you leave your daughter alone with someone who you know was detained for that, even if they were later set free and all charges dropped?

There could have been other information passed onto the Police about him before - they may not be releasing that information to the press as if creates more of a scare factor to wannabe perverts that they could be picked up for something as simple as this.

What if the guy had done a u-turn to check them out, the girls reported him but the police did nothing and then the guy raped and murdered a girl?

edit: he probably drove past drooling so if you have just been to the dentist for an extraction/filling then don't drive past a school slowly!

Some newspaper articles do not contain all the facts/circumstances.

Girl and police did the right thing.

There was this piece in my local paper today;

Three hooded men tried to abduct a 12-year-old girl on her way home.

The Year 8 pupil from Brighton and Hove High School was approached by the men who tried to look through her bag, grabbed her and said: “You are coming with us.”

The girl, who has not been named, shouted: “I don’t know you.”

http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/9239985.Hove_schoolgirl_fights_off_abductors/

A passer-by scared the men away.

Last night police said they were taking the incident, which happened at 3.55pm on Tuesday, “extremely seriously”.

The incident happened in Nizells Avenue as the schoolgirl was passing St Ann’s Well Gardens.

That's a busy road, in broad daylight - women and girls are very vulnerable and anyone behaving suspiciously shoudl have it made clear to them that their actions will have consequences.

Either there is missing information (e.g. about what happened when the police first spoke to him) or the initial arrest was on thin ice.

Pretty sure there must have been more to his "behaviour" than just the U-turn.

According the this, he showed them pics on his phone.

Also - he was a social worker! 😯

If the person wasn't charged it would be unlikely you would know*

*Not foolproof I know, but that's how it is meant to work. Of course, cases like the recent 'saline killer' in the hospital - that poor nurse who has had all charges against her dropped... ouch.

They were analysed by experts and the computer was found to contain 189 indecent images of children.

His mobile phone contained 162 indecent images of youngsters.

Bowkett was found guilty of 22 counts of making and possessing indecent images of children and four charges of possessing extreme pornography following a trial in June.

He was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

Bowkett, formerly of Chorlton and now living in East Dulwich, London, was sentenced to 10 months suspended for two years at Manchester Crown Court.

so the convincted nonce did not even do Bird..I am outraged by that tbh

I changed the order of quotes/info from the artice in case you care

Not foolproof I know, but that's how it is meant to work.

Never does though. DezB's link shows this guy was named before being found guilty - so in the event that he was found innocent (which granted, does seem unlikely in this case) his life would still be completely shafted.

Of course, cases like the recent 'saline killer' in the hospital - that poor nurse who has had all charges against her dropped... ouch.

See also Chris Jefferies - who the papers effectively convicted of killing Joanna Yeates (on the grounds that he was mildly eccentric and he once had slightly funny hair), except it turned out he hadn't killed her at all and was completely cleared.

According the this, he showed them pics on his phone.

That makes considerably more sense. Kind of an important detail!

The important difference is that in the above cases, the plod *thought* they had reasonable evidence and brought people in for questioning then the media jumped on the high profile cases.

But given the OP example and the fact it is very easy to interview someone to find out what they were doing buzzing the girls then check his laptop/phone for illegal images it wouldn't even get to the press if nothing illegal was found to have happened. But it did, he was charged, found guilty and was sentenced.

Is not unusual that six months elapsed between the bus stop incident and the arrest/charge?

6 months is not unusual if there are phone(s) and/or computer(s) to examine. That would need to be done before the correct charges could be libelled.

Also, one article says Jan 2010, the other says Feb 2010 - probably the same incident though.

I gave a funny stare to school kids today.

"Pick up that litter and chuck it in the bin!" after they threw their crisp packet on the floor.

I await the police to find women/cougars in their 30/40's on my pc...

😈
