I saw the side bar and clicked on the Canyon Bicycles Pt2 story. It read just like the usual sponsored "Guess what? We got paid to go and ride bikes and say nice things about them" story. And then it ended with the following:
Living by the River Clyde, every day I am reminded of our long history of manufacturing and engineering. Glasgow led the world in shipbuilding and heavy engineering but no more. In their place are offices filled with financial service companies and bean counters. Is that progress? I’m not so sure. When it comes to manufacturing, UK companies take note. We would do well to take a leaf out of the book of our German cousins and seek to replicate their approach.
WTAF? Like designing here and manufacturing in the far East is a new concept designed by Canyon? Nice one Sanny.
That’s a bit odd - there’s probably quite a few designers in those fancy offices he assumes are all bean counters.
This sort of knowledge economy has long been Scottish government economic growth policy. Of course whilst it does mean we don’t have low paid, dangerous jobs, and the accompanying slums that the shipping industry exploited it doesn’t mean that the products we enjoy are actually made by people who are working in safe settings, earning a decent living and both the employees and the environment being treated responsibly by the employers and those elsewhere in the supply chain.
Is that progress? I’m not so sure.
So, men who like mechanical things think that their country should spend its time making mechanical things. Yeah that's just misty eyed nostalgia I'm afraid. There are probably companies in those offices creating all sorts of brilliant bits of tech that push the world forward, just because there's no pile of swarf at the end of the day doesn't mean it's no good.
And of course it's rather ironic that someone is writing that for a magazine and it gets posted on the internet..
Germany in general does manufacturer more though. Twice as much GDP comes from the sector there than in the UK
The whole point of my moan was that he was saying canyon are doing things well and yet they manufacture overseas like so many uk brands from Dyson to Boardman to Whyte to Cotic to Halo wheels.
So, men who like mechanical things
Im sure Sanny is an accountant. You could even describe that as a “bean counter”
"yet they manufacture overseas like so many uk brands from Dyson to Boardman to Whyte to Cotic to Halo wheels"
Cotic now make the front ends for the RocketMax in Edinbugh!
Cotic now make the front ends for the RocketMax in Edinbugh!
Ha! The way Brexit is going that will soon be counted as overseas...
Cotic now make the front ends for the RocketMax in Edinbugh!

Some people have no sense of humour...
That’s me.
Writer hasn't a clue what they're talking about, just words to fill space. In fact its such utter bollocks that I wonder if the writer is having a laugh.
Actually it would make sense if it wasn't an article about Canyon. Seriously is the writer having a laugh? Backhanded critique of Canyon?
My cube frame says designed in bavaria.
It was manufactured in the far east and finished in Germany. Globalism baby.
The UK simply isn't tooled up enough to mass produce bike frames..
But I'm sure after brexit we can all look forward to millions of highly versatile production plants springing up.
That’s me.
You deleted my post? Bastard!

You say that like it is a good thing? So the way it is now is not good? It's no wonder people voted to leave and we have less manufacturing. That and you giving your hard earned to Fritz, and so soon after remembrance day.
You deleted my post? Bastard!
No! I’m just miserable in general.
