will admit to being a bit dismissive as "london centric" back when first appeared possibly because first heard complete with the video not always a good thing - def' grown on me though
ironically as regards "london centric" pulls top place one ahead of Coventry with The Specials coming in at number 2

discuss (or not) as to the Guardian methodology think just a couple of journalist's selection?
Just someone's opinion, not right or wrong.
I think the criteria should have included the effect that the video had on adolescent boys, then Kate Bush Wuthering Heights would definitely have been number 1
I’d have those two in my top 10, for sure.

fair point I'll see if I can find the WWW. off button 😉
Oh… working from home update…
I think the criteria should have included the effect that the video had on adolescent boys, then Transvision Vamp would've been no. 1.
And a cover to give Friday a kick up the arse…
Ok, maybe I'm a bit abrupt, but what else can I say? I don't agree with the result, but that doesn't mean anything. I've been watching the count down for the last week or so, and some I agree with, some I don't. I'm not sure what (or if) there is any particular criteria, so hard to judge the result. It is interesting to read about the tracks, I was just starting work when Ghost Town was released, and it did sum up the whole country pretty well, so I'd put that at number one and the Pet Shops Boys nowhere.

Abrupt but in my book a good response and agree criteria an issue and not one easy to fix
It's an amusing list, not least for trolling everyone by putting Bohemian Rhapsody at 46, Bridge over Troubled Water at 45, then Never Gonna Give You Up at 44!
Dead or Alive at No5.
Was looking at this yesterday, thought it offered up lots of discussion!
Pet Shop Boys doesn't even make it into the top 100 selling singles in UK history so its a no from me on that basis. Using the same criteria, and discounting charity singles (band aid and candle in the wind) then Bohemian Rhapsody should be number 1 surely.
Queen should be number one… for sure… the top two are both still great long lasting songs though. Love them both.
They made it clear it’s not just top selling singles though… that WetWetWet song being in the top 10 would have been, er, unfortunate. Damn, I’ve earwormed myself…

The effect that had on me was a lifetime of thinking Kate Bush is an irritating shriekywarbler.
I've been casually watching this countdown, and it's been an interesting read. Number 1 was always either going to be something obvious (like Bohemian Rhapsody), which people would have griped about for being obvious, or something more left-field (like West End Girls), which people would have griped about for being left-field.

Do you feel it in your fingers, feel it in your toes yet?

This.
I've never understood why she was held in such high regard musically, and any teenage boy who sat and listened to it would have been laughed out of town. I always thought she'd smell of patchouli oil and have dirty feet.
As above, with Wendy James she did what it said on the tin.
Pretentious tosh list. Where's Don't Look Back in Anger? They aren't even the greatest number ones for the artists they've selected. Name a Roy Orbison song - Pretty Woman!
My favourite No1 was RATM. Added bonus of weeing is Simon Cowell's shoes with the result 😉
Where’s Don’t Look Back in Anger?
Are they allowed more than one from each artist? They already put 'She Loves You' in. 🙂
I'm speechless.

And a cover to give Friday a kick up the arse…
excellent stuff not seen that
They did a great version of Sexual Healing too
I've seen them live a few times, its always a brilliant gig.
Just had a look through the whole list, and some of the choices are... odd in my humble opinion - Carly Rae Jephson? Who? Lots I agree with, although not necessarily in the order they’ve been placed, but heck, it’s someone else’s opinion, and they’re like assholes, everyone’s got one.
I'm surprised they didn't include the Vienna scuppering Shaddap You Face.
I can’t hear ‘West End Girls’ without having to go and listen to ‘Inner City Pressure’ by FotC
Pah. They didn't even pick the best Pet Shop Boys song
Inner City Pressure is a lot better than anything the Pet Shop Boys did

Pet Shop Boys are the most overrated boring drivel in the history of pop music, and number 1s are, by definition, lowest common denominator shite, maybe there is a correlation.
Only people with no taste give a toss about what's no1 in the charts.
PSB#1 fine by me. Secretly like some of their stuff. Mainly the Disco album.

I think you've got them mistaken for Pink Floyd.
I seem to recall The Jam having some number 1s. But yeah Pet Shop Boys every time. loLZ
It pretty much sums up the guardian.
@DezB - good point re: The Jam. Going Underground should've made the top twenty at least.
I had a quick scroll through and saw it in there below Blondie. The fact that Rick Astley was in there at all and not Mr Blobby makes me wonder whether someone was just having a laugh.
Pet Shop Boys should be nowhere near the top 10!
I always thought she’d smell of patchouli oil and have dirty feet.
mmmmm. Little Proustian moment there 🙂
PSB? Yeah I'll go with that. They were biggest when we didn't have a telly and were out all the time, so passed me by a bit but quite a run of massive hits with songs which unlike shite like Bohemian Rhapsody, widened the mainstream. Including becoming football bloody songs (go west was a cover, but still).
