Cancel your TV licence. Only watch BBC iPlayer etc catch up, nothing live.

I don't understand why people seem to think that if they don't pay their licence fee they're still fine to use the iplayer or listen to 6music/radio1/2/3/4/5. They're all bbc services. If you don't want to pay the licence fee then you shouldn't be using them either.

While I agree with the point to some degree, RADIO is not something that you need a TV license for.

Nor is iPlayer. The TV licence is required to watch or record TV as it's broadcast, not subsequently streamed programmes.

And given that this rumoured new show is on Netflix, an on-demand service, you don't need a TV licence for that either.

Switzerland isn't the solution. They have Billag, which is a mandatory fee for anyone who owns equipment that can potentially receive signals from the national broadcast service (TV, radio, iPhone, car stereo...). At over £300 it makes the UK TV license look cheap...

I wouldn't be so bad if they made decent TV shows like the BBC... 🙁

We're going OT here... Any guesses on what the TV show will be called? Gop Tear? 6th Gear?

That made millions for the BBC...

I expect it'll be much the same but more betterer. Can't say I watched it very often but I can see why it was popular.

He's not returning to the BBC, he's coming to Netflix. So no need to cancel your lisence.

interesting to see how long it lasts with a "commercial" outfit if he keeps up with the [s]closet[/s] blatant racism.

It'll be very interesting to see how viewing figures compare. I've been thinking about getting netflix for a while....

I've just cancelled my TV license as we only watch iPlayer. We also cancelled our Netflix about 3 years ago because there wasn't anything on it worth watching, and I'm not keen on paying £100 a year just to watch Top Gear.

What a palava.

Just for the folks cancelling TV License in favour of iPlayer...

Quote from TV Licensing :

Will I need a TV Licence to watch programmes on BBC iPlayer?

If you use the BBC iPlayer to watch TV programmes at the same time as they are being shown on TV (live) then you will need to be covered by a valid TV Licence. You can buy a TV Licence online.

If you use the BBC iPlayer to watch BBC programmes after they have been broadcast either to download or via streaming on demand then you will not need a TV Licence.

Best to be aware I find..

Yeah, they send you a helpful letter explaining it very clearly to make sure you are allowed to carry on without a license- we definitely do, we can't receive live telly.

the bbc really need to sort that out

I'm sure they will sort it out, and I don't really object to the license fee. The BBC makes much better telly than the others and I like that it has no adverts. Buy I am from Yorkshire, my wallet is welded shut and for now I'll make hay while the sun shines.

Yeah 'cos, like you know, the bods at Netflix have no idea about his history do they? Won't they be in for the big surprise.

The first one is no problem. But do I have to like Paul Daniels?

I think he should have hung back a bit and made something with one of the bigger channels rather than taken the first bit of cash chucked at him. If the content is just like the Clarkson DVD stuff you see hawked around at Christmas, can't see it lasting long. There's only so many caravans you can blow up.

It's got to happen. With the ever-increasing proliferation of on-demand services, the licence fee model is becoming less and less viable. There's going to come a point where they're going to have to either redefine the criteria for requiring a licence, or scrap it entirely.

I expect that "Broadcast TV" will eventually be killed off by on-demand services, and the current model of the new episode of $show being shown at a given time and date will just become the time it's released. In the future, our kids will be telling their kids about how they used to have to check huge programme guides to see what time a show would come on, or browse to "see what's on now" rather than just pick from a list of everything, and their kids will roll their eyes in the same way that ours do when we tell them we only had three channels when we were their age.

The government is going to sort that out, by phasing out the licence fee.

If netflix costs £100 I won't be watching "Top gear Mk 2", say £2.50 an episode perhaps, not interested in a subscription.

I don't watch live tv, but still pay the licence fee, because I believe I benefit from a company that doesn't have to pander to advertisers or viewer statistics.

I just wish they'd realise their creative freedom a bit more. Every time I watch a programme on BBC that has the same short-attention-span format as a C4 show (constant recaps/flash forwards), I wonder what's going on.

Big fan of netflix here, hopefully the Oz version gets Top Gear, I was worried that without Top gear threads Mark might have to drop the view/post counts by at least 10x

Netflix, like the BBC, is not dependent upon advertisers so was always the most tipped destination as there are no commercial interests that will impinge on their editorial freedom.

I have no idea how much a year's worth of Sky costs but I bet it's more than the BBC.
If you want an example of what a commercial BBC would sound like listen to XFM rather than 6.
I don't begrudge a single penny of the licence fee. The music documentaries on BBC 4 are worth it alone.

Hopefully without the BBC holding him back he can be a real full on proper racist **** this time.

All in jest though like obviously.

Mmm, maybe they should do a short synopsis of the recaps/flash forwards that have happened periodically throughout the programme.

See being injured I'm not getting pissed off watching stuff on Netflix that does the next/previously - who cares I'm watching the entire series today!

But how do you know what's going on, surely you can't just remember things?

And as for Jezza I think it's a shame he's got back into TV so quick as I was hoping he'd be taking time out to add more literary supernovas to his already glittering firmament

@zippy if you add sport and movies it's around £1,000
