As an old man of the slopes a Schöffel seems the most appropriate. It's light enough to be used as a summer hill jacket with the snow skirt zipped out and the goggle pocket removed. Don't look at the price tag before you hand over the credit card.

Yeah, the main problem with non-snowboard specific stuff is they don't have nice features like lift pass pocket, goggles pocket, snow skirt, glove cuffs etc.

Check out Eider for non-techy looking, really well performing kit with all the gizmos you need. I have a Tahoe from last year. Totally plain black, removable powder skirt, thumbloops, removable hood, goggle pockets, etc. etc. etc. Very impressed.

Of course, with a plain black jacket I have some seriously LOUD trousers! 🙂

If you've TK Maxx near by go take a peek - I've just picked up a TOTR (last season) Maier jacket for £80. Red but plain and simple...

I've given up on snowskirts, I never found they stayed in place if I bailed. Ended up getting some bibs/salopettes from Trew Gear, which are ace, if you happen to be near a stockist.everything I wanted, and nothing I didn't. I'd have got one of their jackets too, if I'd been in the market for one. Using a Rab Vapour Rise (Tour lite)for most things (got your pass pocket in the shoulder and soft pockets for goggles, too) and a Mountain equipement Changabang hardshell for when it's very bitter. Nice jacket, rubbish zip. Getting the main zip replaced by Tundra Outdoor, whose work is amazing.

10, if they were ski trousers, I'd wear 'em! Awesome!

+1 for Arc'teryx.

They are definitely on the spendy side but I got fed up with 'proper' snowboard jackets from the likes of Westbeach, Quicksilver, Burton et al - that are either heavily padded so as soon as you've hiked a couple of feet you're overheating or they soak up every bit of moisture/sleet at lower levels so when you are on the inevitable chilly chair lift you get cold really quickly.

And yeah it's true - jazzy colours seemingly do look better in photos, but I still go for subdued 'old goth in black' look ... 8)

I find wearing a decent jacket means you can fine tune to match the changing weather/aerobic activity with merino layers etc, and the same Arc'teryx jacket has lasted me 4 winters now (with an average of 6 weeks use each year) whereas previously I was having to buy a new jacket nearly every year as they would end up held together with duct-tape as the gaps between the trees are never as wide as they appear at first! 😯

... and nedrapier makes a good point about 'powder skirts' - they are often more trouble than they are worth I've found. The only functional ones (i.e. they don't end up round your nipples when you wipe-out) are the ones that attach to your trousers with a system of loops ... but you don't want to get caught short trying to unfasten a dozen loops when nature comes-a-calling! 😳

Sorry for the hijack but I've got a related question. I'm going on my 1st ever ski trip in Feb and was wondering if my Mountain Equipment Gore Tex hardshell would be suitable.

It's intended as a climbing/hiking jacket really, so no powder skirt, ski pass wallet etc. Are the aforementioned just nice luxuries or is there some other reason that would make my shell not up to the task?

Captain - as an aside, what did you think of the BBRs?

justatheory - Gore-tex hard shell will be fine for a first ski trip. The main thing to check is that what ever waterproof trousers you intend to use will fit over ski / board boots as they are considerably larger than mountainering boots.

My Arcteryx jacket will be doing its 8th season this year - most expensive ski jacket I've had but also the cheapest per week's skiing. Not really suitable for snowboarding though - too stylish 🙂 . Remember folks - fashion is what goes out of fashion!

I'm planning on replacing my current snowboard/ski atire with some nice tweed, or tweed pattern, clothing. Warm, stylish, hardwearing. What could possibly go wrong?

Tweed is excellent. Unfortunately, no one does a decent Harris tweed jacket and trousers. It's all this technical rubbish...

My Arcteryx jacket did my whole season where I did 103 days on the snow and the last 3 years where I have probably done 30 or so days each year.

Its just about lost its hydrophobic coating so water does not bead on it that well now, but being gortex its still watertight. its still in one piece all zips still work etc.

Just a shell so you can layer for the conditions.

I used to get Degré7 gear at cost and still have a jacket, trousers and a windproof fleece which are now quite old but perform brilliantly. Fairly timeless designs so you won't look like you've borrowed someone's cast-offs in a couple of years.

I've also got an Oakley jacket similar to the one above which I can't fault and quite like Spyder gear but been put off by the price.

Yeah I realise my "gloves over sleeves" look in the OP is a terrible fashion [i]faux pas[/i] these days - but I ignore that as find it much more practical: no snow forced up the sleeves when you put out an arm and much quicker to get gloves off/on when taking photos.

Personally I've always prefered the gloves under the sleeves ensemble, but whatever works for you I reckon - as long as it's not the seat of one's trousers hanging down to one's knees in a yo-gangsta stylee I say vive la différence. But we were all young once and the youth has every right to annoy the elders with its fashion quirks...

Surprisingly not - mind you a clear, sunny day in BC is likely to be a chilly -20 something celsius! 😯

Softshell breathes better, has a soft feel and is reasonably snow-proof. Not waterproof but if it's raining you'll be in the bar.

I prefer a GTX Mountaineering shell as a Ski Jacket (with powder skirt) - much more flexible, leave it off and just ski in windproof mid layer when it's not snowing / windy.

See my current jacket hasn't got wrist gaiters. It dates from those halycon days when gloves [u]over[/u] sleeves was [i]de rigueur[/i], along with big ass gauntlets.

My gloves are Dakine Scouts - they are designed to go over:

Gauntlets over sleeves when ripping the phatttt pow on your phatttt pow-planks (or plank if you're a planker) help to keep the phatttt pow out of your sleeves. It's much the same reason as many companies still make [s]babygro[/s] onesies for "heli-skiers".

Yeah that Captain, and if you're a photo geek it is much easier to take the glove off, get a shot and put it back on again - often while still moving. 🙂

+1, plus it must be pretty chilly at speed even on warm spring day!

First saw the 'helmet over the google strap' thang in Whistler a number of years ago when there as a big international half-pipe competition - seemed very popular with the Japanese participants and the free-style/slope-style riders in general.

At the time helmets weren't quite as commonplace on the slopes but they were mandatory in the halfpipe so it was quite common to see riders with beanie/toque & goggles and a pisspot bike/skate helmet (i.e. one without fury winter liner) hooked onto their belts.

Seems pretty common now with freestyle riders - certainly means your goggles aren't held in place with a little plasic clip or worse - some duct tape!

Yeah, but doesn't it mean you can't take your goggles off without removing your helmet?? And you have the buckle of the goggles digging into your skull.

regarding the gloves being over or under the sleeves, I always found that the 'cuffs; of gloves worn over the sleeves got full of snow when I bailed - and the snow would then end up in the glove when I removed it ...

... guess it depends on your chosen glove/jacket interface and what combination works for you. I'm currenty usng a pair of Dakine Cobras and these fit neatly under a sleeve like a harvest festival! (everything safely gathered in!) 😆

Craig Kelly used to ride in what looked like jester pants, a football commentators overcoat and Oakley Razor Blades ... thankfully fashion and taste has moved on ... and ski fashion has seemingly benefited from Snowboarding style inasmuch as the dayglow 'one-piece' of yesteryear is rarely seen these days unless one is attempting a post-modern ironic comment on consumerism! 🙂

I was in Fernie Feb 2010. There was a group of us staying at Susan's chalet: 4 snowboarders, 2 adult skiers, 2 kids on skis and one fairly pregnant lady (my missus 🙂 )

I always found that the 'cuffs; of gloves worn over the sleeves got full of snow when I bailed

Proper gauntlets should have a drawstring at the end of the cuff (bottom left in the Dakine Scout photo above), as well as the usual wrist strap. If that is done up then you shouldn't get much snow up there.
