Saw this little fella today 200mm ish long 10mm round.  So grass snake or young adder

Had a yellowish ring just under the head but that could have been old skin. PXL_20230919_134949937There has to be a snake expert on here .

I've only ever seen large grass snakes. I had no idea we had different sub spices.

No where near water though.

Looks like a standard grass snake, harmless to humans, unless it's angry.

Very easy way to identify a grass snake - a black and yellow band each side of the head. We only have two other native species, and neither one has that. Be warned, if you pick one up, it’ll probably squirt an obnoxious smelling liquid into your hands. One I picked up once vomited up a frog it had swallowed. A whole one. 🤮

200mm ish long 10mm round

Grass Snakes are made of Reynolds 853 - and have a wall thickness of 0.4mm. So a 10mm OD snake will have a 9.2mm ID - although at the butted ends it'll be more like 8.6mm

My first username was from the kids TV channel that was on TV at the time I was casting around for a name. My second came because I was reading Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow  by Jerome K Jerome at the time.  😀
