I have a 1&1 account that I use for email, usually connect via thunderbird on my PC or via my iPhone. All works fine at home on my virgin internet connection. However, when I'm at my parents (EE) the thunderbird fails to send, saying that connection to SMTP failed. Phone still works fine.

The only difference is the broadband connection, so I'm assuming there is a setting I need to change. Any ideas?

PS for reference, I consider myself a geek, just not regarding email config. Term is not meant to be derogatory, not that a geek would find it so.

Not a geek either.

When you say the phone works are your parents. Are you definitely sending email via wifi / parents broadband, not over 3G/4G phone network?

If you are check the settings on the iPhone. I suspect it's probably the outgoing mail server settings. Set your Thunderbird settings to the same as on your iPhone.

Interesting... A chappie here just bought his EE iPhone to me with a similar problem. On the Wifi email is working fine, so the setting for the email account must work. However when on EE's cellular data its not working. Browsing is working fine so there is a data circuit to the phone. Tried both 3G and 4G... no success... Told hom to contact EE and see what rubbish they can some up with.

Some ISPs force you to use their SMTP servers for outbound emails, EE may be one of them. It's so they can block people with compromised machines who are acting as spambots (which would try and send emails out direct)...

Will be the outgoing SMTP port setting.. some ISPs block the default outgoing port (think it's 25) as they want you to send via their servers, so most web hosts (1&1) provide an alternative outgoing port number that won't be blocked by your ISP so you can still send..

Edit: try changing it from 25 to 587, should sort it..

JD, changing from 25 to 587 seems to have sorted it. Good work.

STW should think about branding itself as an IT support portal!!

As has already been mentioned, port 25 is blocked on many ISPs, especially on "home" broadband connections.

Check the settings...

You probably need to authenticate against the smtp server so you'll need an EE username and password.
