Well ok maybe not, but certainly had me papping myself that the car was on fire this morning!
Traveeling down the M1, switched the air con on for smoke to start puring in to the cabin! Ok in reality it must have just been that the air was that humid and warm in the car that the cool air blowing through the vents caused it to condense instantly. First time ever I have seen clouds form inside my car!
I'd give advice, but you're probably dead by now
I had this once, and it turned out to be a leaky heater matrix. Very expensive; dash out job.
Enjoy.
Used to get this in a Honda Civic I had a few years ago. The first time it happened I was barreling down the M4 (it was a TypeR 🙂 ) & it was a bit alarming. As you say though,. all perfectly normal.
My old Pug did this when the heater matrix failed - not cheap...
It's a little more concerning when you see it for the first time inside a plane.
I had it once on one of my old cars.
happened on an older car of mine. Aircon needed re-gassing not long after. Keep an eye on it!

Surely it's not a proper TypeR if it's got aircon?
Heater matrix when this happened on mine too, put it down to the same reasons as you at first too....
Oh bugger, only had it regassed about a month ago....
yep sounds like heater matrix, what motor is it could be a 30 minute job depending if there's an access hatch to the matirx, if not it's a full dash out job which can be silly money at a garage 👿
Its a 54 plate Mondeo TDCi
Yup, heater matrix. Mine's doing the same and smells of fish to boot. Coolant vapour's bad for you apparently...
Mine happens to be a dash-out job (Jeep Cherokee) but as a short term fix (or if you suffer from the menopause) you can just bypass the matrix by connecting the inlet and outlet hoses and not have a heater. Both are doable at home but the former takes a while, and you need to disconnect the battery and also possibly vent the aircon (then get it regassed).
A job for the weekend.
and for summer as no heater in winter is rubbish trust me on that one
There is a clutch on the air con pump of ford diesels that fails and overheats causing lots of smoke, usualy it's a new air con pump! Often it keeps the pump engaged (and smoking) even when the air con is turned off. As a quick fix you could try taking off the air con belt. That is if it's definately smoke and not steam?
Wait until it's less hot and humid before panicking.
My old Mundano did this on really hot days - it was just the humidity in the air.
Looks cool - kinda like a dry ice machine in your car. Just put some seedy 1970s pop on the stereo and make like Pans People.
