10 year expiry date is up on our smoke alarms, 5 in total. They are 240 volt with battery backup and are wired together.

what to replace with?

what is thermoptek?

i have a garage not connected to the house, any easy way to have an alarm out there which will sound in the house?

thanks

Aico are the leaders in domestic smoke alarms, I always fit them. Heat alarm for the kitchen, for the garage, a radio linked alarm, along with a radio base unit on one of the other alarms, that'll cover you without adding new wires to the garage. Not particularly cheap though, £150ish for 5 sensors and the base units.

Ours have just died. The electrician has recommended Aico.

What about linking to smartphone?

Why would you do that? It's extra cost for no benefit. Not everything needs to be connected.

The nice thing with being linked to a network or phone is that you get emails telling you when batteries need changed or if it has detected problems with itself.  It's not essential but rather good.  If you've got the cash then the systems that tell you where the smoke is rather than just an alarm telling you there is smoke somewhere are good but again that cranks the price up

What part of Ireland are you in where the neighbours don't notice everything immediately 😉

When we did our house up One of our neighbours knew we had a new fire installed because someone across the valley rang her to tell he she'd seen some coming from the chimney
