that horrid fishy / copydex smell!
I know that means electrical burning but which part of the fitting needs replacing?

Check that the 'plastic lock ring' that holds the shade up hasn't come undone and moved down onto the bulb.
If you have the standard pendants it's more than likely to be the lampholder part. They are heat resistant but after years they do go. Cheap and easy to replace, like for like. If the rose part is all fine, you can just change the flex/lampholder part (easy two wire)
Always worth investigating though no matter how small the problem seems.
It'll usually be one of the plastic bits that's started to go after years. As oldgit says, cheap and easy to replace.
Is it bakalite that makes the smell- that hard plastic as described above...
