Freshly back from it's service today and the engine management light has made an unwelcome appearance.

Drove the car (the ubiquitous 2.0tdci) the half mile from the garage to the office freshly serviced at lunchtime.

Left work a few hours later and it turned over fine. The ABS and ESP lights came on and it said ESP off. Then the EML.

Turned it off and on again (it's got IT in it so worth a try 🤔)

ABS and ESP lights sorted themselves out but not the EML. Car is back home where I've done a quick check for any loose wires to air intake etc. It drove ok on the way home but there's something odd/slightly different about the idle noise that I can't quite place. It's a subtle change in rate and tone that isn't just fresh oil.

Garage is a trusted indy I've been using for over a decade so it won't be any "selling round the wheel" shenanigans.

Anyone fancy playing "things to check" bingo?

I'll obviously call the garage in the morning.

It could, literally, be anything.

Assume you haven't got an OBDII reader to read the engine error codes?

Only two times mine has had the light was once very early in its life when it was new to us at 10 months old and 1200miles so it was DPF issues from underuse and again much later after driving through deep puddles a turbo hose had been pulled off. In the first case it went into limp mode, second it didn't but was very noticeably down on power.

I hope I haven't jinxed it now.

Happened on mine once after a service. That hadn't reconnected the lead that went to a part of the air inlet or something. Fixed in seconds. Could have done without the overnight worry though!

So, what was it?

Just had a quick google and my issue was the Mass Air Flow Sensor not being plugged back in. I had got about a mile from the garage and the lights came on. Called them in the morning and they told me what to look for and it was sorted.

I've not been back since!

Checked for any loose vacuum leads and made sure the airbox is on right?

It could be the infamous dry solder at the Instrument cluster.  It causes all kinds of random issues and lights, and can be sent away and fixed here for £80, great service with a quick turnaround:

Dont worry about taking it out, it’s super easy via web videos, even I managed it.

...anything? I've got the same engine so would be interested to know the outcome.

Nobody can offer any useable advice other than.....get a code reader on it.

Otherwise you'll play parts darts and change everything from the EGR valve to taking the instrument cluster out.

The availability of cloned/grey dealership level diagnostics determines my vehicle choice nowadays which is why I have 2 Volvo's and a Peugeot.

Late update as car sat unused yesterday and went back in today for diagnostics and I've only just got in from work.

The culprit was an internal failure of the battery. The battery test at the service came up in decent health but they think a cell collapsed giving a bad reading. There was a string of electrical system messages immediately after.

New battery and error code reset and we seem to be all good. 🙂
