Need some advice on smart tv usage.

We have just bought a new OLED smart tv, and very good it is indeed.

Currently we have a basketball c package deal with Virgin for TV, broadband and a landline.

The new tv has Freeview installed, but we don’t have an aerial at the moment to support the use of Freeview, but would consider getting an aerial.

My thinking is to cease the Virgin package deal, and just have the broadband.

Use a mobile, for which myself and wife already have, so don’t really need a landline.

The Freeview coverage in terms of programmes seems fine, as we have Netflix for the occasional films and new series.

Anyone done a similar thing?

Am I missing anything obvious? Just want to reduce the monthly outgoing cost, but not the current choices.

Did something similar with Sky -> Freesat a couple of years ago.  Only things I missed were a couple of channels that aren't on Freesat but I think are on Freeview and Eurosport which I just got a Eurosport Player sub for which, annually, costs less than my Sky package did per month.

Add on Netflix/Amazon Prime and the various catchup services, all of which are on your TV already I assume and you aren't really missing out on anything.  You can rent or buy movies from Amazon/Apple if you want to see them before they pop up on Netflix.

It's a tiny bit less convenient but I am more than willing to put up with it for the £300+ a year I'm saving.

Oh, if you want to record programs from FreeView you'll need to get a USB harddrive and plug it into the appropriate USB socket on your TV.

Dumped Sky and switched to Freesat never really missed but I did sign up to Netflix and Now TV plus I already had Amazon Prime, still saves me about £45 a month though.

Thanks, yes Netflix and loads of other viewing apps already installed on the smart tv.

I will get some quotes for an aerial and probably go from there.

I stuck an aerial in the loft for mucho cheapness.  Obviously it'll depend on the signal strength where you are but consider it.  With Freeview and the on-demand it suits many but it does, of course, depend on what you want to watch.

Mostly it's just the sports you miss out on. Let's face it, the majority of "live" programming is utter guff anyway. Most the good stuff is available via Netflix or Amazon anyway.

I did a few years ago, if you miss premium TV NowTV is basically Sky minus the Freeview channels for £7 a month, less of you buy voucher codes etc, even better 99% of stuff is ad free (streamed rather than broadcast).

We went freesat over freeview. Better picture here, few more channels (mostly rubbish!)
