Came across the Huawei cube ai speaker when looking for a 4g router.

A truly brilliant idea and no longer made.

Have looked for an alternative but there doesn't seem to be one.

Anyone better at looking for stuff than me?

You've presented a solution. What's the problem you're trying to address with it?

It's your phone - just pair to any bluetooth speaker?

It would be the ideal solution for my mum who is in a home and struggles to use a mobile.

There's no wifi or phone line.

This would be a handy gadget that would do phonecalls, radio and music.

The home doesn’t provide WiFi? Is it a care home or a prison? Wonder what other basics for people essentially confined to their rooms that they fail to provide?

Just supply your mum with a WiFi hotspot running on the phone network and tell her not to give the password to the staff.

Hang on. That's not as daft as I first thought, so you'd have an Alexa style speaker/radio etc voice activated for calling people, wouldn't need WiFi or a separate phone (once all set up), work anywhere with a phone signal and with a decent/unlimited data account?

That ticks all the boxes for my elderly neighbour for a low price, he's cancelled WiFi as has need for internet. Seems like a good simple cheap solution... bit like a hybrid bike for Comms.

Have you ever watched someone trying to get an Alexa to actually do something by using plain English? I have, it’s both excruciatingly embarrassing and entertaining at the same time, I just sit there biting my tongue to avoid pissing off my friends. If I were to actually buy a *smart* speaker, voice control would not be activated, because I have a phone which does the job far more efficiently. And quicker.
”Alexa, play ‘…….’. Alexa. Alexa!. No, Alexa, play ‘…….’ ‘ALEXA, play ‘……’”

And so it goes, for the best part of ten minutes.

Countzero - I admit I have not! And the microphone on our Google speaker thing is turned off for that very reason.

However, my old dear has to call me on the landline, so I can then explain again how to use her mobile to find my number in memory speed dial to call me on her.mobile...(we're into the "I don't have an 'any' key realm here)....so you can see where I'm heading with this!!

Good thinking Zippy Kona!

Now if only my mam wasn't deaf, it would be great for us 🤣

No wifi seems odd for a care home. Surely there are some inmates who would appreciate this. Including (but not limited to) your mum!

There is wifi but at mums end of the home it's pretty non existent. Just like most hotels we stay at!

Can I just use a normal Sim in it? The data only Sim costs extra.
