Sat today in the canteen, once upon a time a hotbed of abuse, piss taking, jokes, quotes from the paper, sport etc. No, all it is now, is folks just looking through their phone.

It's not just the canteen, it's in pubs, schoolyards etc.

I am quite the fan of technology, but people just ignoring each other and staring at screens, does concern me.

I do think the internet is the correct place to air your concerns.

I was at a wedding a few months back and basically anyone who wasn't pissed was playing on a phone. I would say over 50% were just looking at screens.

I'd rather they sat in their bloody canteens nerding away than stuck stupid phone in the air in front of my face at a gig.
Yeah.
That said, I only saw 1 phone in the air at the last gig I went to so maybe its diminishing? Cos they realise the videos and photos they get while not enjoying the gig are utter shite... hope so,

Saying that, technology connects people (like us lot now chatting via many devices while our families watch the tv or whatever they are doing)

However, also has the magnetic draw of disconnecting us too from social face to face interaction with people.

Strange paradox

Re. Poor old Einstein above... Being annoyed at wrongly attributed quotes is the new grammar pedantry.

Like with the grammar thing though, soon we won't give a crap about who said what and your facebook feed will be full of people sharing and liking Shakespear's famous ruminations on Xbox vs Playstation.

Mixed feelings about this - two days ago I used my smartphone to film an eating fairy cakes in one go no handed contest in our work canteen.

The worst ones are people either walking along with their mobiles or walking their dogs while staring at their mobiles. They are honestly like the walking dead except they don;t try and eat you.

Well at lunch today we spent good making fun of a female colleague for drop her Galaxy s3 drunk in a tent and smashing the screen.

Then three of us spent ages trying to make dual screen work on my note and her s3. While receiving continual abuse from colleagues with older non smart phones

So for us smart phones is life as normal

Some times we google the odd fact to aid an argument. Very occasionally we might pass round a photo or video on a phone

So no, for me, its life as usual

Long lost family is a favourite at home,

And I am waiting for nicky what's his face to say "we spent half an hour on Facebook, and we have found you daughter.
And then produce a picture of her dancing on a table pissed with one of her baps out on a hen night in Dublin.

we both agreed to ban laptops in bed or sofa for random surfing. Now only allowed if watching something that's worthwhile watching.

The irony with the fake Einstein quote is that the people on the pictures ARE interacting socially. Just not with those present.

If smartphones kill forced smalltalk, that's ok with me.

I was at an extended family gathering at a very posh restaurant when one of my early teenage nephews disappeared and on returning pulled out his phone and showed his younger brother before both bursting out laughing .

on enquiring I found out that nephew no1 had been for a no2 and was so proud of its proportions felt the need to photograph it so he could show it to his brother.

The same phone he had bought second hand from a market complete with several pictures of a mans lower extremities who was clearly happy to see some one.

I would not have thought ashley cole would have needed to sell on his old mobile phones.

Bit odd but I work for a Telco where everyone has their choice of mobile phone as a works phone and a bloody decent discount on personal phones, and at lunchtime in the office canteen (I'll get slapped for calling it that) its full of people eating and talking not a mobile phone to be seen.

Ps.. Samuri I agree next set of organ donors

With all the voice recognition stuff now, we've turned full circle again.

We now text, email and message real people and save oral communication for interacting with machines

Works canteen? Why on earth would you want to have anything to do with the people you work with, when it isn't absolutely totally necessary for the purposes of actually conducting work.

If you really must socialise with the people you work with, and partake in all the activities you listed, then just take up smoking

Currently on a contract at a place with a fantastic canteen - not really cost justifiable given the number of people that work there but really like having a cooked meal with the people I work with - who are mostly decent guys. Mind you, mostly they listen to music through their phones whilst working so minimal interaction then.
