The band on our till has stretched and we need a new one.
How do we even start looking for one? The company that made the till disappeared years ago.

Simply Bearings do a lot of drive belts.
Might be worth an ask.
Usually you would just measure the width, thickness, length and tooth pitch to get an idea.
What make and model of till?
If you count the teeth and measure the pitch and width you should be able to find one. They are pretty common. To measure the pitch measure twenty gaps, and divide by 20 to get it accurate, hopefully it'll be something sensible.
Usually called timing belts if you are googling

Assuming these are a standard size belt, the tooth pitch looks about right for a T2.5 (2.5mm):

Could possibly be one of these if the pitch it a little bigger (3mm)
