Following on from the closed Solar thread, I thought I'd share the little job I'm working on at the moment...

Untitled by davetheblade, on Flickr

A mere 20,000 panels and 10 MegaWatts. Oh and the small matter of a pair of cables to every 24 panels, interconnects at every panel, plus all the associated combiner boxes/inverters etc. Repetitive work is the order of the day....

It's near Wareham in Dorset. The one after the next one we are doing is 4 x the size in Cambridge.

Got some job opportunities if anyone's interested...

Don't know about figures, sorry, but the farmer gets a tidy sum from the investors for the use of his field every year

What is the capital cost for the whole system?

Do they need much maintenance?

Does it actually make any money without government subsidies?

If anyone is interesting in the figures, the this website has some details of its real world installations. There is also the opportunity to invest, though I'm undecided as the value of this.

fwiw I get the feeling that it certainly wouldn't be worthwhile without the feed in tariffs.

Whereabouts?

Midsummer Common?

Would be interesting to know how the cost compares to natural gas.

Lets hope it's facing the right way so you don't need to disconnect and reconnect all those panels again....... 😉

Some of the few off-road routes around here go through that 🙁

Small world, I did the site investigation / pile testing / pile design for both of those! A lot of utility scale solar being built in the UK at the moment.

As for big ones, we did the one by Bournmouth airport, that's a good size, and are currently doing a massive one in Southwick, Southampton.

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsSTR - what do you do on them?

Wonder if you get people pinching the panels for home installations?

They look like physics defying hill-side lakes.

Quite a few going up down south of Bristol airport. Are they planning to use the land for livestock still?
