Our Bosch iron died this morning. 5 yrs old and used every day....
Small miracle or average lifespan?
Depends- how hard is your water?
Soft, minimal scale...
£50 Bosch kettle died within 18 months the £9 ASDA temporary replacement still going 9 years later.
First Nespresso coffee machine lasted 11 years just hope it's replacement last as long.
My iron is 11 years old but then again I only iron once a week and not even that sometimes.
Who the heck irons everyday for 5 years?
Then that’s poor. My water is approaching Chuck Norris levels of hardness and the Philips iron is 8 years young.

The wife 😀😀
Hehe,
Gave up Ironing - just hang shirts on hangers to dry - wearing a shirt and tie at work is smart compared to most folk (University) although one of my colleagues (younger female) did take the mickey that I'd not ironed my shirts (panniers to get stuff to work).
Toaster died last year, marked "Made in W. Germany". Iron with same markings still going strong but had less use
My iron is a Philips and is at least 15 years old. My microwave is a Sharp and must be well over 20 years old although seems to have lost a bit of power of late, maybe need to add 10secs to every 60secs for same effect. Also have a Philips handblender going on for 15 years old as well.
We get more than that out of cheap irons. I only by cheap irons, they're every bit as good as expensive ones. In a hard water area maybe 5 years is OK, but our supermarket own brand (can't remember which supermarket) has clocked up more than 5 years. We do empty water out of it after use though which probably makes the difference. Keeping water in it as the heating element cools is just going to pull the limescale out of the water.
But I know of people who get less than 2 years of use out of theirs so who know's!
We had a Breville sandwich toaster bought as a wedding present in 1990. It can take eight slices of bread and a load of filling. Its been used regularly since then an is still the first choice for post ride snacks.
5 years feels about right unfortunately based on my experience and I don't buy the cheapest stuff. Isn't there a new EU reg coming in about the durability / repair-ability of appliances to reduce waste for this reason? I've bad experiences with the really cheap £7 toaster things but the sweet spot in cost per use is probably some of the supermarket own brand stuff.
On a positive note - my old work had a Delonghi domestic spec bean to cup coffee machine that lasted 5 years of serious office use. It easily got 20+ years of domestic use in that time.
Just retired a 20+ year old Black and Decker iron. When I say retired I mean I used it for applying some veneer edge and an now told it can't be used for clothing again. Don't know why.
Can't find a kettle that lasts more than a few years.
Consumer electronics and electrical good are generally poorly made unfortunately. Disposable society etc Al.
Our iron must be ~14 years old, it's used so much that the plug was pinched for something else maybe 10 years ago! 😆
Our kettle is maybe 5 years old, like the last one it still works, but despite a wire wool ball it is gaining weight from limescale buildup.
Microwave is coming up to 10 years old, still cooks fine, but the clock runs fast and changing the time is a first world nightmare... You spin the dial clockwise and each notch randomly decides whether to increase or decrease the hours or minutes!
Ha - our microwave has started doing the exact same thing! Panasonic?
Phillips iron lasted until 2018 from 2005 I think... mind you the first 5 years of that I was a lazy little toad so it seen little proper regular use until 2010 maybe
Sony Trinitron 14 inch TV in the bedroom, now 29 years old! Has a digital box now but still going strong.
My iron has lasted over 20 years. I make sure I use it regularly - at least once a year...

And mine! Although ours is a Belling. I feel like I am part of a really shit club!
Dualit Toaster - wedding present 25 years ago. Hasn't missed a beat.
Got 15 years out of an AEG washer until it decided it had had enough of being stuffed with towels and shook itself to pieces a few weeks back.
Just looking to replace my mini food processor as the chamber chopper bit has broken after 10 to 15 years hard use. The hand held soup bit still works though so was trying to find just the bottom bit but might be pushing my luck.
Time was that price was indicative of quality but that doesn't seem to be the case these days. It's remarkably difficult to find a decent toaster that actually toasts bread evenly, and I've yet to find one which takes the clearly ironically named Warburton's "Toastie" slices (other than the long-slot ones that are supposed to take two slices).

Oh, nice find.
Now, do they do a 4-slice version...?
