Excellent, I looked up from the laptop and Boom!

Best result against a team that resorted to cheating and poor sportsmanship.

I have aged 8 years tonight.

Deserved the win on the basis of the Colombian attitude, but we have played better.

I reckon we'll beat Sweden easily.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen us win in a shootout before. Genuine question: when did we last do so?

Well, that’s a turn up for the books.

Not sure England deserved to win as such, but I’m pretty sure Colombia deserved to lose.

banana skin 1 negotiated. on to the second....

Point I was thinking, even if england do get through to the final via this, quite frankly, piss easy, route. 😆

Ye no think that'll be a bad thing then having to face the team that emerges from the proper, much much much harder side of the draw? 😆

Spain in Euro 96 I think.

Last time we played a LatAm team that resorted to just playing dirty - Argentina 1966........

It really is coming home.

Really pleased for them. Plenty of thinking to do before Saturday but Sveeeeeden are beatable. A few penalty-related demons exorcised tonight. Well done England.

the problem with Southgate is he wants to be the players best mate and be liked so he won't make the tough decisions required.

Impressed my lad by predicting which of our lot would miss pens. I had Henderson and Lingard nailed on for a miss for reference.

Lucky to get away with that one, though, Columbia were a dirty lot and dragged us down to their level.

So happy for Henderson getting let off and Trippier for being one of the best players England have had there, he has been one running till the end, unlucky to be the man on the post who misread the strike but made up there. Pickford did well to keep going till number 5 too

England will beat Sweden no doubt about that but after that it might be very difficult.

My hope is to see Uruguay and Croatia in the final.

Blimey. England winning a penalty shoot-out? Whatever next!! :0

Had a feeling we could do it on pens but still, the tensions.... Nopenopenope.

And agreed on Sweden - I caught bits of it today and it wasn't great - even the goal was a lucky deflection which wouldn't have gone in otherwise. Hopefully this is the end of the properly dirty teams, we've had a few of them!

Was expecting Southgate to cry in that interview, I've got a lot of respect for him, a breath of fresh air for England there.

Oh and England should never play in grey. Redemption

BBC have the save in their feed.

He kept one foot on the line for the penalty save, which I think makes it ok*

*Although I knew it as not being able to move beyond the line at all until the ball was struck when I played in goal many years ago, didn't stop me though;-)

Belgium will beat Brazil by 1 goal.

Croatia will beat Russia by 2 goals.

England will be Sweden by 1 or 2 goals.

Next next round semi-final stage:

Uruguay will beat Belgium by 2 goals.

Surely we need Croatia to do the right thing and knock out Russia. I know Russia have been a great host and the thuggery non existent but would you want to be the fans of the country that knock them out? Especially if it was England.

Given the effort the 538 guys put into stats that is interesting, have they factored into it that we are on BBC 😉 But remember come the final it will be one from 4 of the best teams

I'm just happy to see that the millennial era is producing more thoughtful and mature England players than the Beckham and Rooney era. I think the post 2008 crash lot work harder, the team seems classier - I'm quietly confident about their future and I'm proud that they played a much cleaner game than the Colombians.

Now I'd like to see us do the Russians over.

After watching the overpaid tossers who made up the Engerland squad in South Africa capitulate to Germany in such a feeble pitiful manner, I not only invented new swear words to berate their ****ing spineless quarter-arsed performance, I swore I’d never ever waste my time watching england ever again.

and up until this tournament I’ve maintained my total scorn for them pretty well

but I agree that this batch of players is very different, and Southgates attitude is refreshingly different to the monumentally overrated clowns who preceded him

from twitter

Kane's father was born in Ireland. Dier grew up in Portugal. Sterling was born in Jamaica. Lingard's grandparents came from Saint Vincent. Alli's father is from Nigeria. They represent England. UKIP don't.

Hmmm, jury is out on that till ye actually play a decent team, lets not get too carried away!

I've been around the game a lot in my younger day, and I like what I see a lot. I don't think we've played that well honestly - good in patches, and a few times we've been very close to excellent but a last touch hasn't quite come off, but in the main it's been against limited teams that have turned up to frustrate and niggle.  But we've been organised, strong, resilient, all those good things you need to be as well.

Inevitably (it's the last 16 of a WC) even sides like COL are no mugs and they had periods of pressure last night - but we didn't really look too flustered and certainly not under the cosh. Even the passing around at the back (Walker's aberation aside) while it gives me palpitations, that's because of my past experience and this side KNOW they an pass out of trouble like the best. I said last night, we weren't even desperate to force an ET goal, because they know they can win at penalties - it's only us old gits that think that what a group of different players 30 odd years ago did has any bearing on what a group of players who weren't even born do.

I'm not getting ahead of myself, I think if you look at the last eight we're certainly lower half, maybe lower quarter but it's tournament football now, and it isn't always to form. And in a way, the coach and his team can say 'you know what - we've already achieved our goal, the rest now is bonus' and the pressure and the freedom that allows might - just might - allow them to really play.

Too busy celebrating to post last night and enjoying the breakfast tv this morning.

My only concern was that in 120 mins we never really created a clear opportunity, only set pieces and hopeful crosses.  Obviously The sneaky cheating Colombians defended for their lives, but we missed the player who can open up such a defence.

Still, were in the next round, so Wahey!!!! 😀
