I reckon it was obvious the intent was to bring him down, even if he kidded on he was going for the ball.

whoa that was tense, best shootout I've seen in a long time, thought Kasper had them out of trouble there but that last miss was terrible

I found that all a bit dull.

So, 2 matches and both dull matches.

Isnit worth watching the rest ??

Possibly, but there has to be 'no chance' of making a proper tackle

Right result for me. Croatia have more to offer through the next rounds. Sure they scraped through this evening but I’d rather watch them than Denmark any day of the week.

least with the dull games ye get a shootout I guess! Great if you've not got a vested interest, brutal if ye have!

Hard luck Casper.

Hopefully Jurgen Klopp was watching for examples of decent keepers .

Yea, watched them. Talking about today’s penalty shootout games.

I enjoyed the qualifiers, but today both games were dullz...

Biscuits gives away a penalty. In the dying seconds of the game both he and the massive **** Ramos are dragged down in the area and don’t get a penalty. Cue running after the ref screaming for a penalty

The massive **** Ramos on his knees in tears at the end.

I've watched both of them cheating their way through countless games, sneaky fouls, getting opposition players booked, diving etc.

Seeing them miserable, beaten and on their way home is a moment of beauty.

Well said DD....I was at a bbq yesterday, but saw the last 15mins and penalties.  Loved it!

Mexico v Brazil next, which will be interesting and potentially another exciting game.  After being beaten by the Swedes, I wonder if Mexico can get their mojo back to give mighty Brazil a run for their money?

Bravissimo - there was indeed a beautiful irony to seeing Ramos exiting the competition having failed to be awarded a penalty from being essentially rugby tackled 😀

Agree with DD, those two cheating spaniards deserve zero sympathy from any football fan.

But is there currently anyone worse than that utter cheating slime ball Luis Suarez?? Just hope he gets his comeuppance one day, he's an embarrassment to football.

pretty average stuff from Brazil, no cutting edge from Mexico in front of goal (ran out of steam towards the end) Neymar rolling around again like he's been shot by a sniper.

Brazil just scored in a good game so far. Open game but Brazil creating more unsurprisingly.

Mexico just seem to want to have one touch too many too many times – that isn't going to work against a team of Brazil's quality.

WT actual F? So the Mexican picked up the ball from between his legs and that happened? Or did I miss some actual contact?

As a non football fan who is really enjoying what I've seen can I ask what happened to all the Russian thugs killing overseas fans?

And if Neymar is in such pain that he rolls about crying but can suddenly get back to his feet, then why isn't Chris Froome using what his doc is spraying on his boot?

Putin clearly has the kind of control over the local population that a Western democracy could only dream of, and doesn't want any unpleasant scenes marring a home WC.

We know that the hooligans exist, and are well organised, so clearly they have been told in no uncertain terms that there will be no repeat of Marseille, or the Gulag awaits.

So after a round of shocks in the group stage, the 2nd round is mostly going to form (bar Russia)  there's usually a couple of shocks... which leaves Japan to beat Belgium as the only potential remaining shock in this round...

Sweden & Switzerland could go either way (I suspect all the way to penalties, both teams are solid & workmanlike) & Colombia & England is too close to call, Colombia I would say are slight favourites due to England's abysmal record in the knock out stages.

As much as neymar is a cheating fanny, replays have shown the Mexican player stood on his ankle whilst retrieving the ball...

Japan are having a proper go! Could we have another upset on the cards?

Ah, the naivety to be throwing a corner into the middle for a giant like Courtois to gather.

But what a great goal, what a dummy by Lukaku when his instinct must be to take the chance on himself.

Great Game, far too much of an attacking formation for Belgium, thought they were Barcelona playing at the Camp Nou, Witzel looks off the pace and the wing backs are weak defensively especially Carasco (sp?) Brave Effort from Japan.

Missed the first half & part of the second completely and was gobsmacked to see the score at 2-0 when I switched the tv on ..

End to end stuff .. Japan were never outclassed and deserve real credit for the way they played .

The game turned when Chadli & Fellani came on  ..and the goal to finish Japan off was perfect in its execution ..

10/10.

Big game tonight, so hoping we can put in a great performance and put Colombia away in 90mins.  Unfortunately though we are England, so expecting drama and lots of shouting at the telly!

Its England and theres actually a (probably misguided) sense of optimism, so its pretty obvious whats about to happen

Its going to extra time after they equalise in the 94th minute, then we'll lose on penalties when Raheem Sterling blasts one into row Z

I expect to be watching from behind the sofa while doing a lot of swearing. Curse you Gareth Southgate for replacing my jaded cynicism about the national team with some waistcoat-wearing hope

Sad to see Japan out, after an heroic effort early on they seemed to succumb to the paced efforts of the Belgians.

Enjoyable none the less.

Tonights game will be “interesting” but I predict we’ll be ooot.

Cracking game, probably the best half of football I've seen so far this WC! Real shame to see Japan go out, they played so well! I am actually optimistic about tonight as Columbia have not been particularly impressive so far.

Felt for the Japanese last night, but the Belgium team were too strong, especially when Bobby put on Mr Hair n Elbows.
Wonder if that fluke goal is now their luck used up? Still think Brazil will have them in the quarter final, & whoever wins the France Brazil semi will win the trophy.

Not sure who's going to win the first game today - hoping it goes to extra time & pens, so that if we do somehow win tonight their nicely tired.

No matter what happens tonight, I think I've seen enough in this team to warrant hope going forward & that Gareth Southgate has done a fantastic job & shouldn't be sacked, especially considering he didn't want it at first. When he was appointed it seemed like the easy safe decision.

It's football madness here today in Northern Sweden. leaving work at 3pm and will be getting lagom #tankedup with the Swedish #ladsladslads ..  I hope they win so much, then we can meet them in the quarters after we crush Colombia. Only fly in the ointment is the mother in law is on her way to visit us. Can't have it all.

As an Arsenal fan I am hoping that Captain Flappy  (Ospina) has a bad day at the office. He often does.   The way the draw has opened up I'm so so hopeful of us going through. Therefore we wont of course but hey ho!

I'm trying not to be hopeful, but in this team i've seen signs of freedom, and enjoyment, and togetherness that seem to have been missing from past teams (and also some of our rivals) - add that to the capability we do have no matter what anyone says, and it can be potent.

I don't think it's our time yet, but this side has youth and time on their side - only 3 are over 30 (Vardy, Young, Cahill and half are under 25)

I'd like to see Southgate remain whatever, use the Euro's as another stepping stone, and the 2022 as a genuine target.
