You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Something half decent and waterproof, any recommendations? Need to get it as a present for someone, I'm clueless.
Quite a personal thing depending on specific requirements.
Standard rucksack, single sling style rucksack, messenger bag etc.
Have a look at Crumpler, Kata and Lowe Pro. Tons of options to look at.
I've got one of each of those as well as a Manfrotto messenger bag which are all good for different things although the quality of the Manfrotto bag is much worse than the others, and it's generally not as well thought out.
A bit more info might help you get some specific advice.

It would yes, its for my son, an over the shoulder type, kind of like this

It really depends how much gear they have.

You'll not fit him into that.
Bridge cameras are typically smaller than dSLRs so that's likely unsuitable. But again, it depends what he wants to put in it. You've just asked "recommend me a rucksack" with no indication of whether it's for taking butties and a thermos on a walk around a local reservoir, or for packing for a week's wild camping.

Crumpler are good. I have something similar only Canon-branded for when I'm only taking the camera rather than multiple lenses and assorted Stuff.
Good suggestions above, but one query - how waterproof? Keeps the rain out waterproof, can be sat in a puddle waterproof or likely to get submerged waterproof? There's precious few of the last one, and they're a bit specialist, so I'm assuming one of the first two
Not many of the shoulder bags will deal with much more than showers, though a lot will shrug rain off easily a flappy top can be risky if it's wet and windy. A lot of camera rucksack come with a rain cover which are good, until (again) it gets too windy.
Crumpler shoulder bags are good if it's definitely a shoulder bag you're wanting, but as others have said, depends how much kit. LowePro make good bags and you can often pick them up on EBay for a decent price.
I quite rate my Tenba BYOB - you can pop that into whatever bag you already have then.
Various sizes are available.

This really, Camera can go in a zip lock bag too if really worried!
He currently has no extra lenses so it's just camera and standard lens
Big fan of Peak Designs slings. It's the bag I use the most.
Think-tank also do very good stuff. Usually come with a water-proof cover.
After trying many man camera bags I have settled on a f-stop ICU. Camera bags are great at storing amera kit but rarely have space for anything else.
I keep it i an old berghaus winter / ski mountain pack as the f-stop bags are pretty dear. T
I've always said I'd change once the berghaus dies but it just keeps going.
I like the f-stop stuff as its totally modular and you're not limited to just a camera bag.
Low-profile did something similar with a bottom compartment and a top bit for general stuff. It was fairly compact.
I have a Lowepro MiniTrekker AW rucksack and a Lowepro Rezo TL20 holster case fror SLRT and single lens just sitting around since I sold my SLR gear. If you are close to me (Marple / Stockport / Manchester) then you can have them both for a charity donation....
I've got a crumpler messenger/ laptop bag that has been on the go since 2004. Great bit of kit, still looks pretty new. Still pretty waterproof. I thought it was expensive at the time, seems well worth it in hind sight.
If I'm taking my DSLR out with one lense or a flash I have it in one of these with some extra padding inside.
Mine was much cheaper. The idea behind that was to have a bag to take the camera into town without it looking like a camera bag. As it's leather it's shower proof, but not marching over the hills all day waterproof.
Not near you not. I could pay postage and make a donation for the rucksack though.
Anyone looking for shoulder bag type SLR carrying could do worse than look at Domke's range. They come with a wax you can rub in that really helps with keeping the water out, and they 're pretty inconspicuous. Only thing to be wary of is the velcro can be loud if you need to get the camera out stealthily.

These from Lowe Pro both work and last forever and have a waterproof cover built in:

https://www.lowepro.com/uk-en/toploader-zoom-50-aw-ii-black-lp36702-0ww/
the toploader may be more versatile as easier to get camera in and out when out and about.
Oh yeah, and in true STW "recommend what you have" style, I have a (considerably) older model of this:

It's excellent and the current version looks greatly improved. It's a bit like a backpack with one shoulder strap running diagonally across your back, so you can swing it round in front of you to get at the contents. The one niggle I have with mine is it's "wrong-handed" for this southpaw, in an ideal world I'd want it over the other shoulder.

My boy is left handed too!
