hey,

The Mrs has purchased a slow cooker out of my hard earned cash....it then went and sat in the cupboard for months....

anyway i'v decided i am going to fire it up and have a go.......so.....

Does anyone have any good recipes?

Shin of beef, cubed
Chopped onion
Chopped garlic
Tin of chopped tomato
Curry paste to taste

Leave for 8 hours or so. Simple.

We love ours. It's a nice big one, so can get lots in.

Lamb tagine is lovely.

Onion chopped
Carrot chopped
Dried Peas
Ham Hock
Bay Leaves
Cover with water

10 hrs on low and you've got fantastic Pea and Ham soup.

So which is better? A slow cooker, a cooker or a pressure cooker?

well i'v only had experiance on a cooker..so i can't reealy comment

Oh god don't get myself and Binners started off ours get HAMMERED!!! Curries are ace in it you can use cheaper beef cuts too to make lovely stews.

Get yourself into one of these discount book shops they always have cheap slow cooker books. Or add more liquid to normal recipes.

For best results brown everything off first then shove in the cooker

Slow cookers better you can't really go out and leave a pressure cooker unless you're not that fussed about your roof being on when you get home 😯

Glad I bought my pressure cooker, it's quick enough that you don't have to worry about going out and leaving it :p 30-40 mins for a beef stew (not inc. prep time which takes me about the same 🙁 ).

Cubed pork, sliced onion, peeled & sliced cooking apple, peeled & sliced eating apple, sliced peppers, seasoning, stock cube, dry cider. leave for 6 hours on low. Thicken with a bit of cornflour, add creme fraiche before serving. Brown pork off & gently fry onions to soften before you bosh it all in the cooker.

these do sound good.................have to admit i am a complete novice when it comes to slow cookers....do i just bang everything in and leave it for 10 hours.....is there any thing that won't work?

Lamb Henry is nice. Just brown the lamb off and stick it in with some seasonal vegetables, don't forget a bit of water.

They have different settings. Read the instructions matt.

I was meaning more along the lines of which makes the best food? I have never used a slow cooker and only memories of a pressure cooker was being allowed to press the release valve as a kid.

And, given no inconveniences of time, do they both just make food that is simply the equal of a normal cooker, albeit faster/slower for convenience? Or is the food tastier?

2 x lamb shanks
1 x bottle of red/or 1/2 of a port bottle
bay
onions
sweetpotatoes
garlic

brown the shanks,cube/chop everything else and cook for 8ish hours....reduce the stock and whisk in butter for a nice rich gravy.i usually re-roast the bones and add more wine to make a richer gravy which i then freeze into little pots 😛

They are ace. I did Christmas lunch shoulder of lamb in mine which was amazing - it's great for lamb tagine (other meats are available) as above, but don't forget you can use it for whole cuts of meat too. I google for recipes, I also have a recipe for 8 hour ginger cake which is gorgeous.

I also have put a whole chicken in mine which worked very well. Just veg on the bottom, chicken (keep meaning to try it breast side down - keep forgetting) then whatever liquid I have around - last was a can of fizzy cider. They're great for un pretentious cooking.

For stews and the like, it's the equivalent of leaving it on a very low simmer all day. No better or worse, really, but far less likely to burn to the pan.

I must admit the smell of a curry or stew thats been bubbling away all day is nice when you get in from work.
