Am sorely tempted to see them next month, but its a 1hr+ drive each way, plus i'm watching the pennies at them moment so not sure I should throw money at it when the show is based on a shouty man with his mate + laptop.

I imagine the crowd makes the show with these guys. Anyone able to confirm or deny?

only seen them on the TV at festivals, i imagine at a venue they are headlining the atmos would be better and much more partisan

Seen em 3 times. Yes, they're worth an hour trip. Most of the gigs I go to are in Brighton, which is an hour each way for me and never regret it.
For me it would depend on the venue, with a band like Sleaford Mods, the smaller the better. You wanna look Jason in the face when he's spitting that venom. He has got fantastic stage presence. But, to be fair, there isn't much else to look at!

I saw them at the launch of English Tapas. Great live act if you can get up front, or they’re playing a small venue. If you’re a bit further back and can’t see much of Jason, it’s quickly loses its impact. Sound man looked like he was having the easiest night of his life though.

Aye Holmfirth Picturedrome a couple of weeks back, which is compact. Top night.

Sound man looked like he was having the easiest night of his life though.

Assuming you're on about the bloke at the back with the nobs, dials and sliders, whatever he was doing he can't have had it as easy as Andrew (the other geezer in the band).

Job-see-ka!

Seen them a few times, including Manchester Academy a couple of weeks back. It’s a truly visceral experience

If you often look around at the shitshow this country has become and wonder where the anger is then this will provide some answers. It’s all been distilled into Jason. As has already been commented on: get there early and get down the front. The support band - Lines - were really good

This is surely the most full on thing Joolz Holland as ever hosted...

Seeing them in Brizzle on Saturday. Saw them a few years ago at Green Man and they were great. Really looking forward to this one. I’d say the hour’s drive is worth it, but I struggle to do a gig without a few sherbets. (Only because I never ****ing get out 😂 )

saw them the other week in lincoln. i think ive mentioned it before, im torn between thinking theyre the sh1ttest band around, or utterly brilliant.

at the end of the day, as OP says, its basically a (very) shouty, sweary man and a bloke bopping about doing absolutely nothing other than holding a beer bottle. even bez works harder than that 😀

but..... you just cant take your eyes off them! utter fury being spat out in the lyrics and yes, it works well in the smaller venues.

OP, go see them.

Yeah saw them at Glasto about four years ago after getting bored of the ‘main stage’ stuff going on. Loved them.

Yes, would say they make more sense live than on a record.

Audience is a mix of guardian and gammon. Actually quite well behaved.

Quality. Add STW Forum to that list (or is that Guardian+Gammon)?

Guardian+Gammon

Haha, we were talking about this after we last saw them. Basically the theory is that the guardian readers (me) are subliminally going to see some 'authentic' 'working class' rage served up as entertainment. (I'm not sure Jason is authentic or working class) Not sure how comfortable this makes me, to be honest.
But this being said they are still great.

I don't always understand Jason's point of view. Lyrics are left leaning but in interviews he seems to deflect being political.

I can accept that; you don't have to be specifically 'political' to write from experience and have an opinion on living in a slum town and spending your giro on cheap booze and fags in between trips to the job centre (drawing on his experience and also his work as a benefits advisor I suspect)

I guess it's a case of writing what he knows about and in turn that becomes political as opposed to being political and then writing songs to advance that political message.

Personally, I don't go and see any band for their politics. Only the music.

and a bloke bopping about doing absolutely nothing other than holding a beer bottle

Well, apart from the fact that it's pretty obvious he's the one who puts the backing tracks together on his laptop, then queues them up onstage. Part of their "thing" is that he just clicks and nods and grins.

Yep saw them them in Norwich last year, again best to be near the front, theirs is a very simply act, but Jason is very watchable and not scared to have a pop at the audience either.

Although they have been surpassed by seeing Idles last week, that was 50 minutes of pure aggression and comedy mixed together.

Yes.
Front row 3 times in the last month.
Best live performance I've seen in ages.
Years.
Possibly ever.

And I've seen some stuff.

I met them both the other week.
Separately actually.
Very nice guys.
We had booked the adjoining suite at the Sheraton.
I checked Jason's working class credentials against my own.
It's undoubtedly a hard listen . I told him .
It's a bit like a hard book.
But it's very clever , and very well written.

Andrew is just a top bloke.
Both seem very switched on.
And pissed off.
General ennui with it all.
Aren't we all?

Don't know about vote leave. I just want to leave the planet.
I suppose I could accept everyone else leaving.
Probably easier. For me.

I called them out on the "performance " of it.
It is ALL an act.
It is them, and part of them , and they are playing a part , based on experience , but it's an act all the same.
Andrew elaborated on it.
Don't let the nodding dog / Bez act fool you.
The guy is no idiot.
I'm relatively new to it.
A mate put me on to them about 4/5 years ago.
I had a bit of a listen , but at the time dismissed it as not for me.
And I love headbanging....
But give it a whirl.
Deffo a 50+ demographic.
Which is bang on Gammon age.
There are a few.

I don't think they are listening to the words.

Yes , support band Liines ( double ii ) are great.
Spoke to the girls a few times.
First Time in Liverpool they were blown away by the reaction.
Which was nice.
I spoke to the singer after the show.
She was stood near me watching the end of SM , so I said hi.
Nice girl. Great voice.
She sounds a bit PJ Harvey.

Check em out on YT.

And for reference I've met Bez as well.
And I read hard books.

Like all the working classes...

Who knew they let the experts in.

for the record, I was being ironical. I wouldn't be interested in seeing them live if I didn't think there was something about them.

Bez comparisons a bit harsh, but kinda fair too. That chap has some great beats up his wizard sleeve.

Is it just me or does that Jools Holland clip look like a grumpy Pet Shop Boys to anyone else? 😆

Also, talking of most intense things on Jools Holland, it's always worth posting this one of At The Drive In. Pretty shambolic but also great 😀

One Armed Scissor on Jools is probably one of my top 5 favourite ever live captured performances.

Itching to see the Smods now, have been rinsing their catalogue all month and its probably fair to say I'm at peak addiction.
Sometimes the penny drops and a band suddenly seems absolutely vital.

Seen them twice. Both times in Sheffield. At the leadmill a couple of years ago and earlier this year at plug. Both times great but first time better. Well worth the trip if you ask me.
Agree vital is the right word.

So I took the advice offered here and got a front row position last night in Bexhill - thoroughly enjoyed the show, a really good atmosphere despite the heavy content. Jason is a frontman to behold. A proper punk poet.

@binners - Liines really were excellent! Bought their album after the show, handed over to me by the bass player I had subsequently fallen in love with no less.

Nice one Slimjim. Good to see a happy report back. And I for one am most pleased you didn’t feel the need to back it up with a bunch of shitty ‘ooh look I was really at a gig!’ photos! 😊

Nice one slimjim. Glad you enjoyed it. And Lines were indeed worth arriving early for. In the past, I've been a bit blase about getting there for support bands, but I always make a point of it nowadays.
