Reliable or not?
I'm looking for video and phone calls, just had a look a Go To Meeting and for only $468 per year for the basic package it seems a bit steep especially when Skype/Skype is free and group videos are only a fiver per month.
What am I missing?
you wanna fffappp off on a dating site, dont you?........... 😉
I find it pants - Its fine for text chats but thats about all. my calls usually cut out every 20 -30 minutes and the quality is iffy.
I use a SIP phone separately for work and that has been hassle free. I've also tried skype group calls and they have died an earlier death...
I'm not a fan of it but 7million people are!
@ ton Eh? 😕
Seems OK to me. I have v regular calls back home to the UK from Brazil, and I also have one student I teach English to over Skype so so long as both you and the people you are speaking to have good broadband you should be OK. On poorer links you can always just have sound and no video.
Who's the SIP provider alexxx?
Cheers Simon.
Use it all the time at work for both one to one and group calls. Tend not to use the video so much for group as you need a lot more bandwidth on the primary machine. Quite often mix in some skype out calls with the group calls.
Most of the time it works completely perfectly to everywhere apart from Nepal for some reason.
The ShareMyScreen feature is brilliant when discussing stuff
Use good headphones and mic, not the cheapest but no need to go too far either
Not to sure sorry Simon, it's not run by me I'm just a client on it with a preset phone and no way to check the settings.
To give you an idea as my worries with skype - I have a 4mb connection - live in the french alps and usually download at 150kbs. however skype seems to struggle..... figure that!? I think its been more unreliable this year than previous.
If I was you.. I'd try it - if it works fine - continue if not - open your wallet!
my experience is that video uses around 400kbs and audio 40. If there is any real latency in your connection (e.g. if it is a shared connection through a satellite) then it's not happening even if you can download ok.
Skype works as well as the internet connection - pretty unreliable for voice to most of Africa - as are phone calls, but pretty good in Europe.
Our family use it UK-Spain-Australia seems to work ok. Occasionally Picture is a bit poor, not worked out yet if that's the camera or broadband speed of one participant. For multi video conference I think you only need one person to be paid up, haven't done that yet tho. I had some software problem that I think has been fixed now by Skype, but haven't tried it since the fix.
One good feature is you can share your screen, so you can show other person stuff on your computer ie pics, spreadsheets etc
I use it lots when travelling and have had just voice calls on some super slow connections without problems and as long as both ends have good speed then the video is great.
Thanks all, I'm going to have a play with this SIP stuff and see what happens. 🙂
Use Skype a lot and certainly find it less stable over the last year or so.
How about checking out Digital Samba? We're trialling at the mo.
leffeboy - standard adsl wired connection - nothing crazy! I am going to swap out the orange livebox tho and hopefully that might help - not holding out tho
I've used it for years to keep in touch with people all over the uk and the world, its always amazed me that they have never earnt a penny of revenue from me. My dads mate runs his business with it.
Quite frankly, I dunno why more people aren't using it, thb.
Free, and alllows you to speak directly with somone t'other side of t'world.
I've sorted out a Brazillian lady's accomodation needs in London tonight on Skype.
And I'm an idiot. 😐
