My Sky+hd box has started playing up and after a call to sky they're expecting me to pay 60 quid for an engineer to come out as it's out of warranty. Have cancelled my subscription (ending at the end of October)

Anyway I'm now looking for something to replace my sky setup.

What I'm wanting is something that can bring in an hd signal that I can send to my tv which is hd ready but only has standard def freeview.would freesat be the easiest option?

Also like to watch avi format which I normally just watch on my pc.Have read a little about Android smart usb boxes but not too sure what they do.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I have a shuttle xpc box which runs silently. Currently with win 7 and mediaportal on it. With a sat tv card you can watch and record hd tv and output to tv. Also as its a pc runs everything else.

Get yourself a Humax Freesat receiver, ideally the one with twin tuners and recording facility. Then something like Western Digital WDTV will handle the media side.

If you have bt broadband or infinity it could be worth looking at getting you view through them. Or you can get you view direct from John Lewis.

Western Digital wdtv live ordered to take care of my media needs.Given that I've got a dish in place I'm leaning more towards Freesat.Humax and Samsung seem to be the front runners.Anyone had any experience of these ?

Thanks for the guidance so far!

My Technisat HDFS lets me play avi files from a USB drive (also picks up network media but it's a bit flaky so I tend not to use that).

Can also record to a USB drive too, but single tuner so you can only record (or pause/rewind etc) the same channel as you're watching.

Internet connected so you can use iPlayer for catchup.
