I've been looking at what to do with Eurosport etc moving away from Sky.

We are currently on Sky Q 'basic package' which roughly comes out at £35pm. This was ok when it included Eurosport and Discovery +.  However now its going I dont want to pay that much for basically Channels 1-5 which is all we use it for otherwise. Ive called Sky and they have said because the service is significantly changing I can cancel whilst still in contract with no penalty.

We like the Sky Q interface (yes luddites) and often see what to watch by looking at the TV Guide on Sky Q day by day and setting stuff to record.

I just looked at Sky Stream and new customers and you can get the same offering for £15pm !! Is Sky Stream as good as Sky Q? Our internet is plenty fast enough to support it. Does it still offer a 'TV Guide' type function or is it all just based on accessing content by themes etc?

I did find a thread on here from about a year ago and views then were mixed on whether Stream was actually any good, and people wishing they had stayed with Sky Q.

Whats your thoughts? Ta

Switched to sky stream last year from Q. I think it's better. UI is slicker. The boxes are tiny and silent. Don't miss the record function at all

I suspect the old thread you are referring to was started by me. I did switch to Stream from Q in the end. For me it was worth it to get Sky Sports etc. in UHD on my 2nd TV which you can’t do with Q. Stream was also a lot cheaper. With stream they just do in line with inflation bumps every year, rather than the stupid “double in price and having to haggle it down” dance that they do with Q.

Yes, Sky Stream gives you a TV guide. Obviously you can’t select things to record, but you can add them to your Playlist. Essentially that is bookmarking it to watch on the relevant catch up service. If you watch things on non-BBC channels then it is worth paying for ad-skipping as it will be a pretty miserable experience otherwise.

I guess the obvious question is, if you are not watching any of the extra channels, why you don’t just use a a Freesat box (or Freeview if you have an aerial). One off cost, no monthly charge, and proper recording.

On your “my internet is fast enough” point, be aware that headline download speed is largely irrelevant. Low latency and connecting via Ethernet instead of WiFi are much more important.

I just have a freesat box and it works great , a recorder has a one off cost, then we just dip in and out of the streaming services as they have series we want to watch.

We looked at what we watched and it was mainly free to air TV.
