A couple of nights ago, I was woken up at like 4am by loud music playing. Some inconsiderate **** in a car outside, I thought. Turned out, my Sky HD box had switched itself on in the middle of the night. Because it's all HDMI-CEC'ed up, it also fired up the amp and TV.

I switched it off, thought maybe a software update or something had done it, then a couple of nights later it did the same thing again at about 2am.

Googling gives plenty of hits for boxes turning off, but the only thread I can find about it coming on of its own volition is from 2009 and doesn't have a conclusive answer.

It's only just started doing it after maybe ten years of ownership, I don't have any pets or small children pressing buttons on remotes, I haven't changed any settings in months, and I could just switch it off at the mains at night but that's going to be a pain in the ass as regards to recordings. And contrary to the thread title, I highly doubt it's actually a ghost.

Anyone have any bright ideas?

Could it be the TV or amp turning on after an update or similar and then switching it all on?

Other than that, maybe Sky have decided they need more pennies out of you after 10 years so have sent the bugs round .... ;o)

Cross-posted to the Sky forums, incidentally.

It doesn't work the other way around, the amp switching on won't wake up the Sky box. In any case, it's not networked, the last time I did a firmware update on it I'd to burn it to CD and play it as digital audio(!).

Switching on the TV will wake the amp and it's plausible that it received an OTA update I suppose, but again that still wouldn't wake the Sky box.

Oh wow! Heavy, heavy, heavy!

Yes Neil, we have got a video.

Just realised as soon as I posted this, this actually isn't plausible after all as the terrestrial aerial has been broken for months.

It’s probably your mysterious fifth housemate turning it on.

Update: it's just done it again whilst I've been sat here.

Box spontaneously switched on, TV showed "Sky+ HD please wait" in big white-on-black text, after a couple of seconds it reset with the LED blipping red and a squawk from the HDD, rinse and repeat maybe a dozen times before powering up fully.

It's broke, isn't it.

Just noticed, it's really warm too. I've unplugged it, see if that makes a difference.

see if that makes a difference.

if it doesn't then you've either got a ghost... or batteries.
