Looking to change my 2002 Audi A6 1.9 for something else as the clutch is high and it's not worth repairing. Been looking at the mark 2 Skoda Superb.

Looking at the 2009 hatch / saloon model 2.0 tdi CR 170. Anyone got one? I was wondering if anyone had one. Whats it like to put bikes inside? It feels well put together and large. Anything I should look out for?

They seem great value.

Other options are Ford SMax or VW Touran.

I looked at an estate yesterday. Was a nice tidy car but decided I was at least 20yrs to young for it.

bought an outback instead.

I know what you mean jam bo. I'm completely indecisive as to what I want though. Been dithering for ages.

We've got a 60 plate estate Superb Elegance 140 tdi and it's a great car. Huge inside, comfy drive, plenty nippy, decent fuel economy (over the last 2½ years we're averaging about 48mpg with mainly rural driving), loads of toys*, acres of boot space. We've had it since 110000 miles and added 20000 on top of that. No issues so far, mainly just general upkeep - tyres, timing belt, that kind of thing. There's a reason nearly every single taxi in NE Fife is a Skoda Superb.

Bikes realistically need the wheels off and the rear seats down, but they're split seats so you could still get one or two small adults in the back depending on how you arrange things.

*The early MK2s have a really crap Bluetooth module that only works with very old phones so no handsfree/music streaming if you've had a new phone in the last 6 or 7 years. I believe you can buy a new Bluetooth module but it's about £120.

Thanks Flying OX. Thats worth knowing. I do have an iPhone 7 so it could be a problem. Is the Bluetooth module a DIY fit or take it to a garage?

Less than an hour's DIY from what I can gather. It's somewhere under the seat. There are a few different modules that will fit but not all will allow both handsfree calls and music streaming. The Skoda forums have all the info.

I've not done it though. It's the wife's car and it doesn't bother either of us enough to spend £100+ on it.

Thanks Flying Ox. They look like great cars. Completely torn as to what to get to replace my current car.

I have the bottom rung s with 1.4 petrol, hatch. Huge inside. Quiet.

Bike wise with everything folded flat only the front wheel needs removed. The boot alone will take a road bike sans wheels and seatpost out just.

I really like it, 14 plate and touch wood 0 problems. It's not cool, sexy or fast but I don't care.

Thanks larrydavid. Will be using it for something similar. Throwing my single speed MTB in the boot, camping trips, long motorway trips. Looking for something refined and something I don't feel like I have to wash.

Friend of mine had one until recently. Very nicely out together car, quiet and comfortable and massive boot. Loved the big sunroof, too.

I say she had one, because she did, right up until a scaffolding truck smashed in to it. She, and her son, walked away, shaken but unharmed.

Good car.

Depending on where you are and what your budget is, the one I saw yesterday is worth a look. It’s in Falmouth though so a long way from anywhere if your not in Devon/Cornwall.

Thanks CaptainFlashHeart. Sounds like its definitely worth a test drive tomorrow. Got any info jam bo or a web link?

Going tomorrow to look at a 2009 2.0 tdi 170 SE hatch back. Full service history, had a recent clutch and cam belt change. In Blue, half leather. £4500. Is that a good price?

Similar priced Audi A6's I've looked at don't seem such a good buy.

It was with Matt Searle estates in Penryn. He’d only just got it in so not listed yet. ~£7500 and about 70k on the clock.

I had a 60 plate SE 140 bhp hatchback/Twindoor with the DSG box until last September.

Excellent car in so many ways, quiet, comfy, plenty quick enough, I got around 46 mpg average during my ownership.

I had it for 3 years and put about 70k miles on it, nothing needed doing apart from normal service items. Got 35k miles off a set of Michelin Cross Climates on it.

It had a towbar already fitted I got it so I used a Thule towbar bike rack, 3 bikes on the back and a adults inside didn't affect it at all.

I'd certainly recommend one.

£4.5 k for the car you describe looks about right to me but YMMV.

Thanks Wombat. It’s got 91k on the clock. Newish MOT. Seems like a no brainer!

Should have said: I'd go with the estate if you can. In it the seats fold flat and flush with the boot space. In the hatch there is a lip. Also, and obviously, the estate will swallow bikes better. If I recall getting it in the boot would have been much easier without the parcel shelf

My dad has had a 10 plate 170tdi estate since new. Think it’s an elegance trim with the 6sp dsg box.

its a great car, we use it as part of our convoy wafting the family to Austria to ski. It does that effortlessly.

things to watch for: rear suspension is very sensitive to alignment and will happily eat inside edges while appearing to do noting to the outside. It’s also heavy on rear springs (we don’t tow). Avoid anything that’s towed a caravan.

some trim is fragile, we’ve had a constant niggle with b-Pilar trim not quite fitting snugly.

auto lights / wipers are a generation behind and can be a tad slow to react.

DSG box uses wet clutches on this model. Check it’s had oil changed. At 40/80/120k.

Emmison Update recall thingy appears to regularly cripple this engine. I wouldn’t touch one that’s been done with a barge pole. Likewise anything that’s done short trips will need dpf/egr atttention. As a result watch out for the new mot as many have had DPF removed and will fail.

Columbus nav is ok I suppose. It’s actually a vw RNS510. Still reckon a screen mounted TomTom is better. Dads has a line in for music, but as mentioned above the Bluetooth unit is prehistoric and refuses anything from Apple.

forgot to mention: he’s 78 this year. Cantankerous regretful brexiter (think victor meldrew crossed with Arnold Rimmer) Suits him down to the ground.

We had a 2009 1.9 diesel (105-ish bhp) manual on the work fleet. Repetitive AC/blower motor fault where only one speed would work, blowing hot; probably went three times in 8 years. No other gremlins

Split boot/hatch lid is clever

Beware of ex-taxis

I have a 2011 hatch with the petrol 1.8tsi engine and DSG gearbox. No problems in 50k miles, just routine servicing. Dry clutch on the petrols so no oil to change and a cam chain engine. Used for long distance driving down to Southern Spain each year and its so smooth and quiet. One stretch is a continuous 10 hours and I do get a bit of bum/back ache.

Only irritating thing is the rear seat base does not split or tilt so you have to remove the whole thing to get the seat backs flatter.

Would definitely buy another.

FWIW I have the VW eqivalent, a Passat estate B8 and I love it. It looks nice but it's not flashy, goes well, is economical and I can slip two bikes in the back, seats folded, lying on their sides separated by a blanket. With the wheels off and the boot floor dropped to the lower position I can hide two bike frames and wheels and some soft luggage in the boot with the blind closed.

The B6 model and the B7 model both had the rear wheel alignment problem and I made a fuss about the tyre wear with VW. I even sent VW UK a photo of my rear tyre spinning on the balancing jig with a clear dip towards the outer third of the tread where the rubber had worn away leaving a sawtooth pattern. A few months later I got a phone call out of the blue from an engineer at VW in Germany asking if he could have a copy of the photo! The problem seems to have been sorted on the B8.

I believe the Superb is actually a couple of inches longer than the Passat.

Great cars but I’ve had the emissions fix on my Yeti with the 140bhp engine and even with them extending the warranty on the EGR valve etc I wouldn’t touch one. If it hasn’t had the update go for one. Car went from not even noticing the DPF to it constantly regenerating. I do plenty of miles on motorway as well and use my wife’s Fabia Tsi for anything local.

You absolutley sure of that? The estate’s squabs lift and tilt. Pull sharply up on the front of the squab then lift the rear part ( these are notorious for jamming on the mushroom bolt at the back corners so you may need to manipulate them a bit. They even have holes to hold the headrests if you remove them.

Where are the holes for the headrests? Intrigued as I have a 2011 superb estaate.

its a 1.4 tsi petrol and over 30000 town and occasional motorway miles its been a great car.

Despite fears it would be gutless it's taken us across france loaded up no problem. Only issue is inability to get 3 kiddy seats across the rear.

Word of warning about Blade Skoda Bristol though. Their sales and service department are absolute crooks. Lied about stuff including the car history, ordered the wrong things at point of sale (including winter tyres we needed, fitted mismatching wrong ones) and fobbed us off about simple warranty issues with paint and trim. Eventually got things sorted by talking direct to skoda uk and the workshop manager. Avoid!

We had a bass model estate at work, with a Diesel engine. I’d happily buy one. Lovely motor.

Thought I’d write an update. Car was a trade in at a Skoda main dealer.

I went and saw the car and had a test drive. Amazingly comfy, plenty of punch from the 170 bhp engine. Huge inside even though it’s the hatch/salon model. I was really impressed on the test drive. Makes you think why would you would buy an Audi. It felt very refined.

Spec was excellent. As above phone connection was rubbish. Service history was main dealer and specialist.

Its had a lot of money spent on it. Clutch at main dealer at £1400. Throttle body £500. It had had the emissions fix but as mentioned above had a two year warranty. Recent tyres all the way around and they were going to change the timing belt tensioner and water pump.

However.. I was told the bodywork was excellent. But on looking around, rust on the drivers side rear wheel arch. Everywhere else was perfect. Shame really.

A little disappointed. He was going to chat to the big boss about trying to fix rust. He mentioned though it’s probably going to auction now as they probably won’t fix the rust.

The search goes on. Very impressed though.

Csb I checked my dad’s tonight and I’m wrong. It doesn’t have cutouts. But definitely does lift and tilt.

I've found anyone two I'm interested in.1.6tdi Greenline estate SE or 2.0tdi 170bhp 4x4 hatchback

Anyone driven the 1.6tdi Greenline estate? Is that engine powerful enough for that size of car? Thats the reliability like for the 1.6tdi?

My mate has the 1.6 in a Octavia, I didn’t realise until he told me. Seems quick enough.

Thought I'd updated the thread. In the end after looking at a few Skoda's I predictably bought something different. On the off chance I looked at an 2009 Audi A6 2.0e CR TDI Avant. Nice condition, immaculate interior and exterior, same money and year as the Skoda Superb I was going to get. It drove nice so I bought it.

Thank you for everyone's help.

Sounds like a good deal then, I rode in the back of a Superb at the weekend (it was an Uber naturally) the owner LOVED it, and it was massive and comfortable in the back, but an A6 is going to be betterer.

I'm still considering a Superb (short-list is currently Pipedream - Golf R estate, runner up prize pipe-dream Leon 300 ST, more realistic - Octavia vRS petrol or diesel and sensible trousers, keep the wife happy, act your bloody age - Superb Estate, a nice high spec one).

I don't know if they're due to be replaced soon, but it doesn't seem to matter what spec you go for (if you play around with the new car configurator then it's easy to get it up to £40k) there always seems to be one available, 6 months old, 3000 miles (AKA a 'Demonstrator') for £20k or less.

Thanks P-Jay. When I test drove a Superb it was impressive, really nice inside and a good drive. Completely agree, massive interior space, I was really tempted. A6 was just a better deal.

Current one has only been out a couple of years, so unlikely to be changed again soon.

I have a spec'd up '17 plate for the next 3 years which was an ex demo, at about 18k off retail. There is no way I would be spending nearly 40k on one new against a 5 series. It's significantly poorer inside (although vast!)
