I am idly considering a new car, the superb looks like it would fit the bill, and was looking at not too old cars around 15k. However, there are almost no petrol versions available second hand, and I am concerned about the long term viability/reliability of modern diesels, with DPF issues and other things leaning me towards petrol.
Now considering buying new, as there are some good deals around through brokers, and there is 4K 'scrappage' which is probably about the trade in value of my current car. Am I being daft looking at petrol(probably ~15k mixed mileage a year) and new? Strategy would be cash purchase and keep for as long as it's a runner, not chop and change every 2-3 years.
Any advice gladly accepted, along with any experiences of buying new through brokers. Thanks!
How about a lease? I've heard there are some good deals out there.
😀
15k a year is probably break even between petrol and diesel over 3 years or so. But if you can't find the petrol car you're after, that would imply you'll be paying a premium to get a new petrol car just in case you have problems with it when it's older. This might be worth it to you to avoid hassle (I bought new and basic a few years back and it was the right, if costly, decision.).
So you're not talking a huge difference in running costs. The scrappage scheme is a manufacturer operated/funded scheme, so make of that what you will.
If we link to ling's site again will she come back?
When I was looking a few years back I wanted a second-hand petrol Superb but like you couldn't really find any (and those that existed seemed very basic spec). I couldn't stretch to a new one so went with a second-hand Octavia instead (and glad I did as even that's bigger than I need really). I would say unless you need a lot of room for rear passengers then just go with a petrol Octavia.
If you can afford a new Superb (at the spec you want) then it's down to whether you want to take the hit of the initial depreciation or not. I'm glad I didn't get a loan in the end to stretch to one (although at the same time I don't really regret buying my previous car new, I kept it for 10 years in the end).
I was in the same position 2 months ago. Had the current diesel for 12 years so looking at new cars. Just didn't make sense buying a diesel now, even without all the current scaremongering petrol cars are just much nicer, diesel
I bought through drivethedeal is horrible fuel. Delivery was originally mid to late Feb as Ford didn't have enough petrol engines (I bought a focus 1.5) but delivery is now mid to late Jan so not too bad.
I wouldn't buy another diesel.
How about a lease? I've heard there are some good deals out there.
Simpsons Skoda are doing some belting deals at the moment. I know because I pick up an Octavia in an hour. (-:
When I ordered mine, there was several diesel models just coming into the country so it took a couple of weeks all in all. They didn't have any petrol models at all, so you might not even have that option unless you're happy with a lengthy lead time.
Is there really so much in it these days mpg wise?
I would be thinking about where you might want to travel in your diesel car in 3-5 yrs time ie city centres?
