Anyone on here use a skipping rope for exercise? If so, how long can you skip without wanting to collapse?

I ask because I remember reading about an athlete who found that almost her entire fitness regime consisted of skipping 30 for minutes on a daily basis. Thinking this was a great idea, I tried it and lasted maybe 2 minutes, in spite of the fact that I wasn't in too bad a place fitness-wise at the time.

So, is skipping just extra hard to do? What is the endurance curve like (i.e. is there a skipping version of couch-to-5-kms)? It seems like a great exercise that can be done almost anywhere. so why don't more people use it as a primary form of exercise?

Welcome to the awesomeness of marketing etc. Got to ask what you are activating or working on with skipping and what you are trying to achieve.

First time I tried skipping I was wrecked in a couple of minutes, trying too hard! Use it as part of a warm up now or to link other exercises in a circuit. I use a coated wire rope now, spins faster and makes double unders easier. Start simple with both feet at once and get used to the rope speed and jazz it up once it starts to click!

Well, right now, I'm trying to achieve not being sore. 😉 But eventually, when I get moving again, it will be a combination of weight loss and general cardio health in combination with, or even in advance of, getting on a bike.

The athlete in question, incidentally, was a small-time local 'advanced amateur' as opposed to a professional, and she was just talking informally to a local journalist about what she liked to do best in terms of keeping fit.

So (trying not to be cynical) being fit and exercising leads to being fit....

My wife nearly killed Henry Cooper at a BHF Charity do. She had a display team skipping on lolo balls, rebounders and pogo sticks ipusing little speed ropes. Enter Henry talking about skipping and how much he did BITD. He grabbed a modern light rope and just wrapped himself up in it. He was used to the old wooden handles and frabiric ropes. Too bloke and laughed about it. Just.

Seriously, start skipping without a rope first. Just do the actions of having one. This is how I started at boxing. Initially you don't have the coordination or fitness to get the full training benefits. Just frustration by only being able to jump rope for a few minutes at a time.  By jumping without a rope your fitness level builds then gradually introduce a rope. When during that session it is tying you up and you are not really training dump it and continue without. Over time as your fitness and coordination increases you will be with the rope all the time. Like any skill it takes time to master, it is worth it though as I think skipping is a great base fitness exercise transferable to all sports/life.

This is a good call. I tried a bit of skipping last year. Boy, it is way harder work than I expected. Just a fabric rope, wrapped some duct tape round it to get a bit more swing to it. Should look into getting a proper one. It got a little frustrating.

If I was granted a wish to be young again, I'd definitely move to Hungary to join a jump rope team.
