Its that time of year, got to sort the garden 🙁

Need to remove a raised section - load of soil/harcore which i imagine came from the extension when it was done, before i moved in.

Was going to hire a 8 yard skip (£350) but someone mentioned to me that getting a grab lorry might be more cost effective.

I can't seem to find a local supplier that will give a price online, anyone know if this is the case before i ring round tomorrow?

thanks

If the current price for an 8 yard skip is £350 then I clearly have no idea what anything costs any more.

Christ! What's happened?

I can't remember how much mine cost but it was cheaper than skips especially if not a mixed load. They're not as big as they look though.

A grab and a general builders 8 yard skip are normally the same(Ish) price.

I pay £282 for skips and £300 for a grab of earth or £250 for hardcore.
£350 mixed I think.

Generally a grab will take 2.5x the volume a skip will, but lothe rry is limited by overall weight more so than volume

Brexit, trump, covid, energy crisis, world war 3 🙂

Also i live near Brighton which seems to be a licence to add 20% to the standard price of most stuff 🤬

Thanks Jim

so just to clarify if i have a bit more than would go in an 8 yard skip a grab would probably be better value (because i think i was pushing it with an 8 yard)

Yes, better value, you'll just to make sure you have got good access for a large 6/8 wheeled vehicle, same size a s a bin lorry generally. The arm can reach approx 5m from the wagon

I'm not far from you and used Harris Grab Hire, they were one of the more responsive companies. I had about 15 bulk bags of soil collected and they collected with an 8 wheel grab that can take 17 tons.

PS They much prefer it loose rather than bagged, they emptied them into the lorry and dropped the bags back anyway, but I had them from a bulk delivery and meant I could store lots of soil without it spilling off the garden.

I got rid of quite a lot of the waste from my garden through free cycle, Facebook and Gumtree. There's a high demand for topsoil and there are people that will take subsoil and hardcore. Its easier if its bagged in 20kg sacks. I got a load free from a local food company.

I'm assuming as well that with the skip you'd be shoveling it yourself?

If that is the case I know which way I'd be leaning if the costs were similar! And it wouldn't be onto a shoveling having spent a couple of days digging...

I had to lose about 3 cubic metres of duff breezeblock around 18 months ago.

At the time, grab lorry was under £100, small skip for a few days was far side of £300, no contest.

Sheet of Damp Proof Membrane first, then OSB or similar on top of that, then your muck.
No clean up required, and some companies will take your DPM and OSB as the last grabfull, as they can keep it seperate if its on top and secured in the grab. They unload the grab content before tipping the truck itself.

If its a single and simple material type like dirt or crushed concrete, and access is ok (including over head) then a grab is cheaper every time.

If you have a tow bar you could pick up a small trailer on marketplace for the price of a skip, do a few skip runs and punt the trailer on.

Just had my back garden done by a contractor. He laid protective sheets all over my driveway (3 car size) and then took 12t of top soil out which they dumped on the sheets. Big grab wagon came and dumped 8t of aggregate etc and took the 12t away with them. In a 10day project they never used a skip at all. Very quick and easy. It did rely on me having a big driveway and easy access.

Have you tried taking soil or rubble to your local tip recycling centre recently!

If you're lucky you can sneak x3 little bags by the tip police. 🙂

No wonder Baz, Daz and their van do such great business on Facebook spotted groups.

Just had 48 tonne of soil taken away in the last few weeks. My cost was 150 a trip with the grab lorry. mates rates. I did advertise the soil and someone paid for 1 grab load so that helped. I'd advertise it now on gum tree facebook market place etc and see if anyone contacts you and save some costs.

Not sure what i'm going to get out of here is "soil" in the pure sense of the word - the raised section looks supiciously simlar in size to what i imagine the foundations of the extension would have been.

The whole garden is block pavers which need to come up so i might try marketplace for those?

Get a skip and hire a mini digger, digger was surprisingly good value and unsurprisingly good fun for a day.

I've taken a bit recently, all in old feedbags. 10-12 bags of garden waste, 8-10 of scrap/rotten timber and about the same of rubble/soil. Nowts been said yet. Probably helps I can get on at quiet times.
