It's been a fair few years since I've had to hire one but I was shocked at the price quoted for a 6cu/m. I suppose it's down to the cost of waste licenses and ethical disposal.

Anyone for a guess at the price?

Harrogate here - about £200 for a standard skip with mixed waste.

In West London I pay £248.00 + VAT for a 8 yard covered skip. Hundreds of the bloody things. Doesn’t include plasterboard though, as they charge £1k and then I get refunded according to weight.

£200 for a 7-yard a few weeks ago, Birmingham. Very strict about filling no more than level though
An established family-run company was cheaper than the nationals
4-yard was about £150 from memory, so the 7-yard made sense

Looking at your prices £220 + vat is about average.

It's for turf and soil. I'm in the wrong game.

If you are paying for a skip to put turf and soil into then you are. Use freecycle, Gumtree or Facebook and someone will take it for free. I despair at the amount of good recyclable materials I see in skips.

I'd have the turf but I'm in W Lancs. Got a trailer too!

Don't dump it. Lots will take it from you.

Cambridge must be really cheap then, normally about £130 for 6 yard inc on road parking permit (which is about £15).

When I said soil, I meant in-fill crap and heavy clay from footings. And by turf I meant moss and dandelions.

No bugger wants it, hence a skip.

It should be a cheaper skip maybe hide the turf at the bottom, inert waste no recycling to do just fills a hole. Once the old mattress with the map of Australia stain gets chucked in it is an expensive skip

Thing is, the skip company may not want it !?! .... I been asked before whether a skip is for earth (guessing on the basis if Id said yes, they have said no thanks?)

TBF .... I once packed down sooooo much earth into a skip it lifted the front wheels when they hoisted the skip up.

Guess my name must be mud

(sorry true story, bad joke)

What about a open back truck and grabber ... I've heard they can be cheaper ?

Good luck

I'd be getting a grab wagon in personally but I obviously have a fair few contacts.

I'd second a grab wagon if possible - we paid half for one compared to the 2 skips we'd have needed.

Soil/earth/grass is not classified as inert waste so is more expensive to 'dispose' of apparently! You can't simply put it into a landfill site like some other waste. :/
