Hello my brother in law and family are thinking of ski hol in the area, so any one been? If so what is the skiing like?
Is it better to stay in Bourg St Maurice (more amenities and other things to do) and use the funiclar to go up, or stay a Montchavin on the mountain (is there anything to do there?) or any alternatives in the area.
They are using eurostar so what is transport like in terms of buses or shuttles
?
Thanks
If the weather is a bit iffy then then Bourg St Maurice is a bit better, that said its no looker as a town but there is more to do than being up in Arcs at night , also a little cheaper for eating out and accomodation.
😛
Sure you're already aware of this, but the funicular links Bourg Saint Maurice with Les Arcs 1600, Montchavin is part of La Plagne, a wee bit down the valley. Les Arcs / La Plagne now linked via the Vanoise Express cable car, of course.
In terms of staying on the mountain, Arc 1800 is probably the best village for nightlife across the whole Paradiski area (although I'm told the new Arc 1950 area is pretty good too, even if it does look like Disneyland).
If you want to stay in Montchavin/La Plagne, there's a weird thing with the Eurostar - on the way to resort, you can get off the train at Aime and get a bus up the hill, but the train doesn't stop there on the way back. You have to make your own way to Bourg Saint Maurice and get the train from there.
From the train terminus in Bourg Saint Maurice, you can get shuttle buses to any of the resorts in the Tarentaise (Tignes, Val d'isere, Sainte Foy and La Rosiere as well as Les Arcs/La Plagne).
Yep
Arcs 1950 does look a bit like Disney,
Good accomodation thou.
Great ski area wherever you end up, plenty of mileage.
You could try Plagne if you dont fancy Arcs as Stevomcd says it joined over the valley by the cable car.
I only really know the area in the summer, but I'd have thought Bourg would be the slightly better option. There is more to do on a non-ski day (ok, still relatively little), and it has better access to other areas (as Stevomcd said). It's also cheaper and has bigger shops/supermarkets if your planning on self catering/buying kit (superU, intersport, sport200 etc).
Montchavin is a nice village, which I guess could suit the family aspect - i guess it depends on what your after/age of kids etc. Plenty of lift access from there too.
Cheers kids are late teens.............all good skiers but they are not still round and play scrabble bunch, but not 'lager lager lager' either, they are trying to have a low emmissions green hol hence no flights but train and no hire car.
If your looking to do it 'green', then have a look at the 'Loft' in Bourg. It might not be your thing for a family holiday, but they are a really cool hostel, great atmosphere - quite a communal feel to it. I can send you details if you like.
if you do find some other green ideas, i'd love to hear of them, as i'm looking into that myself.
Cheers
thanks the loft looks intresting but i do not think the adults will like that too much but have emailed it to my daughter for next summer 😀
