I alternate between sitting and standing and was wondering if I should try one of these?
Anyone got one? Any good? Would you recommend?
Cheers,
Mick
Yup, long time user and I find it's there only way to alleviate pain in the pelvis and hips associated with sitting too long (I work 10 hour days at a desk).
My employer supplied mine along with a proper desk chair when it became clear we weren't going back to the office anytime soon. It did mean I didn't get much choice or investigate the market much, but I'm pleased with it.
The trade-off is profile when collapsed and working space. Remember you'll likely want somewhere for a mouse mat when standing. I opted for a slide-out keyboard support that tucks away when working in the down position.
I use one, I bought it from amazon sold as "ergoneer". Its okay, I've been suffering from all sorts of hip knee and ankle issues. I'm not going to claim any miracles but it got to the point that I would try anything and my posture had always been poor, I hoped this would improve it.
Did it work? Well, achilles pain is improving (slowly) - plus I can do heel drops while I work, knee pain is not getting worse and may be improving (although it's hard to tell it doesn't cause pain when I run any more), and the hip problems don't occur when I'm standing. I can't claim it's the desk as I have thrown everything at the problems at the same time.
I have a Duronic 120cm sit/stand desk. I bought it from Duronics via Amazon (as that is cheaper than their own website). I went for 120cm version as I can fit on the laptop and 2 screens.
I assumed that I would be 50/50% use at most, but it has turned out that I stand pretty much all the time. I have had it for the last 3 months and found it much more comfortable that sitting at the dinning table.
Mrs Panda has been using her sit/stand desk for a couple of years now, and recently bought a cheap stepper that she can use while working.
I have found a mat or similar (mine is a bath mat) helps your feet comfort.
Now I have used one I would not want to go back, but I do appreciate the sit/stand nature as days after a long run the option to sit down is welcome 🙂
Another advantage of sit/stand is it is height adjustable, for perfect fit.

As per @hunta, I've got one from my employer after finding out that WfH is long term for me. Echo everything said above.
Make sure you've got a big enough desk to accommodate the new sit/stand platform with a bit of room to spare would be my only advice. Otherwise go for it, I end up standing most of the day (unless I'm doing a big document).
Assume you mean those that sit on top of a desktop? I used one at work and fount it a PITA. OK for standing but reduces desk space, and no good for seated because its either too high, or if you lower your desk your desk is too low and you bash your knees, or you need a chuffing large desk so you can work to the side of it when seated. The electrically raising desks are much better I find.
Watches this thread with interest...
I made myself a standing desk at the start of lock down - using some flexispot legs off amazon. It's great and would recommend them.
A conversion for an existing desk sounds like a total PITA and the worse of both worlds.

I just stuck an IKEA Lack side table on top of the existing desk. It's the right height and if I'm standing then I just put the usb keyboard and mouse on the Lack table
I found a bit of RSI with my mouse hand as it's raised in standing position so I could do with building a little shelf underneath where my mouse hand naturally rests
It's a cheap option, they're less than a tenner but you have to go to IKEA is the problem
We have a sit/stand desk from Ikea. They are around the £200 mark. It's a manual winder handle rather than electric but works just as good. Sometimes though I forget we even have it until I bang my knee on the handle. Just make sure you have enough slack on your cables for it to be at standing height.
I looked at the converters and all seemed very limited for space (especially if using 2 monitors or you want a notepad beside or anything) plus awkward to raise / lower. Anything half decent was getting close to £200.
So i bought a electric rising desk base from Amazon for just over £200. You can put any desk top on it, I just knocked the top off my old desk. Works an absolute treat, I stand most of the day,. just sit for a rest or to eat.
This one but via Amazon, same price.
I bought Mrs OTS an Urbio one in April last year. A few days ago it decided to stop lowering all the way and then started pissing oil out of the strut. The design means I can't get the strut out to replace it - so it's gone for recycling.
I've replaced it with this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ZR5FZQ2
Which has a 3 year warranty, and you can get access to the strut to replace it if needed.
Yeah, it sounds like a convertor would be a pain, it would always be too high when lowered.
I bought a dual motor frame from Forest AV. Chose it because it goes lower than most sit-stand desks. The base height of some, when seated, are too high.
Love it. Really stable and smooth to operate. Used an Ikea desk top.

I looked at the converters that sit on top of the desk in the past when I needed one for a back issue, but they just take up so much space. Obviously most jobs are more and more paperless but they just don’t allow a lot of space for writing in a notebook, reading etc (yes I still use a pen with ink!). As a result I have a proper sit stand electronic desk at both home and work. Mine aren’t cheap and proper ergo work stuff, but the IKEA desks seem decent if I was buying now.
I have had conset desks from these folk in York https://www.lundia.co.uk/shop/Electric-Sit-Stand-Desks.html
My brothers BF has a desk top converter which he uses for meetings etc. But when he needs to sit and write he ends up using another table in their kitchen room as it’s a faff moving everything about.
