I have just gone online to do my self assessment tax return and after years of doing one the HMRC don't require one this year! I used to run my own business but have not had any earnings from this business for a couple of years and winded things up this year.

The question I have is in order to pay back our child benefit do I have to complete a tax return? Is there any way to check if this is being clawed back through my tax code or should I just call up the revenue?

Thanks for any info, I find the Tax stuff really stressful.

Why would you need to pay back child benefit?
Phone the tax man and ask them. If you do get through they're helpful.

You need to pay back some or all of your child benefit if you earn over a certain amount. I am lucky enough to fall into that bracket. I think a phonecall is the best option.

If you earn over £50k (including things like company car) and you claimed child benefit then yes you have to complete a self assessment.

That my understanding as well. Tax return required to pay the charge, even if you're purely PAYE.
Almost as if stopping child benefit from being a universal benefit was a policy made up on the hoof…
