Tried a few, like lots.

Personal faves are:

Balvenie doublewood
Dalwhinnie
Jura superstition

(in that order funnily enough)

Currently trying on a linkwood 15.

Where are the rest of the STW at as far as malts go?

I'm a bot fickle and have a poor memoy. But I'm an islay fan. So something like

lagavulin

laphroaig

would be my ideal suprise single malt presents...

Highland Park.

Bruichladdich Peat

My palate isn't sophisticated enough for any of the really old stuff, and I always get told off for adding a tiny splash of water to a cask strength one. I like the hint of peat and smoke in the Highland Park , and the Bruichladdich is so smoky it's like licking a burning log.

Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Talisker amd Laphroiag. Sadly not very compatible with a student's budget 🙁

Scapa 15yr old is my all time favorite.
Jura superstition is a recent, and thoroughly enjoyed, discovery.
Mortlach 16yr old on special occasions.
Also own a cask of bruichladdich.

Current faves on the go:

Benromach 21yo
Old Pulteney 21yo
Glengoyne 17yo

All different and I'm not over-fond of campfire smokiness.
Looking forward to what Santa brings me this year. 🙂

So it's my birthday in a few weeks so I'm going to ask for a bottle of bruichladdich. Any recommendations for which one to start with?

Lagavulin, etc most of the Islays.

My take is this, i can get to like almost any single malt, just need enough to get the taste.

Nowt wrong with a bit of spring water in a cask strength malt, else the alcohol will overpower the other flavours.

Benromach (?)

I've said this on here before, but the Benromach Organic is the best 'bang for your buck' whisky there is. Tremendous stuff for the money.

& a Caol Ila Distillers Edition.
Bruichladdich Rocks.
Edradour.
Jura Superstition.
Old Pulteney.

Tried a Tesco's own Islay whisky the other night & it was absolutely ok!

One mans meat is another mans poison!

Coal Ila with a dash of water at present. NICE!
And Tyger is spot on but he can't spell. Ardbeg is lovely. The 12 yo is especially good.

Lagavulin 12, caol ila 10, laphroaig cairdeas and triple wood are my four firm favourites tho I like all islay ones and haven't tasted a bad ardbeg and I've tried just about all of them, also very partial to talisker distillers edition , in fact most that have been finished in a sherry cask too as it happens lol

Caol Ila

Talisker

Currently on a bottle of Arbalour (sp) which is quite nice.

I do prefer a smokey, peaty type affair, think a bottle of Jura superstition IIRC is next on my list.

I think my all time favourite was given to me in an old whisky bottle with a hand-written excise label on it... came to me via a friend who had dealings with the distillery. It came from the barrel which the workers put aside for themselves..

It was something around 18 years old Glenfarclas, although the age was a little debatable from the writing on the bottle, definitely cask strength, and had been matured in sherry casks.

Unfortunately i drunk most of it on the night i was given it... and have since finished the bottle.. never to find another one again.

Aside from that, Coal Isla is lovely, once i've have the first sip, and i do love the older Scapas.

And at the moment I am drinking a very palatable Sainsburys own brand Speyside... not bad for £20!

Islay every time for me. Laphroig, Lagavulin, Talisker, Caol Isla, Bruicladdich...
I stayed with friends recently, and after dinner one night, I was invited into the wine cellar, where there's a special little place put aside for the whisky:

The Talisker was particularly appealing... 😀
...so was the Lagavulin, for that matter.

There is one thing wrong with that photo above....

None are open 🙂

For me it's anticipation

76.95 Tropical Fruit Salad

73.53 Springtime freshness; spicy warmth

Just ordered these, the SMWS November pair from Speyside

Yum, can't wait

Aaaah, rainy Sundays.

Glenfiddich 12
Oban 14
Lagavuilin 16
Mortlach 16

In that order, depending on "treat" fund.

"Definitive whisky thread" - not a chance, the nature of whisky precludes that definitive concept.

I did have rather a nice bottle of 18 year old single cask, cask strength Macallan once though. I would certainly recommend that.

mine never last long enough to make comparisons !! I do tend to favour the Islay malts, but attempts to create a collection to saviour are usually dashed by my greed, such that having more than one bottle on the go at any one time is a rare event 😛

Some of that Japanese stuff is good. That said I understand they bought a Scots distillery and then made the head lad an offer he couldn't refuse to spend a few years sorting a distillery in Japan for them. If do then fair play, they did it properly.

I know, it's Islay, I was posting in a bit of a hurry, and forgot.
And yes, I know none of those bottles are open... 😀
