Can anyone recommend a free backup software thats simple to use?
I'm just after something where I can select certain directories, and it'll monitor the changes and perform a backup to another drive.
Ideally something that'll keep old copies of the files too?

Arq is available for Windows and Mac, cheap not free, and actually good. It stores to google drive or amazon cloud or whatever. The bill for my half a terrabyte photo backup is probably about £3 a year.
You can still get SyncToy from Microsoft - it's not OS (but is free) and does a really good and simple job for the sort of thing you describe.
Cobian Backup is straightforward and reliable, I've found.

Robocopy is included as standard with Windows. It is a command line program, but once you set it up, you can save it as a batch file, and scheduled task if you want.

That's a good price, which cloud service are you using as a back-end?
I've just discovered I have 500Gb free cloud storage with BT so I'll investigate how I go about accessing that and trying to integrate it into the solution.
I guess the best way would be if windows can see it as a 'drive'?

retro83: I'm pushing my Arc backups to Amazon Glacier. It's priced for backup: very cheap storage and adding, but (relatively) expensive/slow to retrieve. For a backup solution, that's ideal.
Windows File History.
Point it at a drive, NAS or whatever. Configure the folders you want backed up. Job done.
It will as the name suggests, keep a history of changes.
More than that, once activated, right click on a file or folder in Windows, and there's a Previous Versions tab. You can view the history there and roll back if you like. It's all integrated into Windows.
Another (additional) option is OneDrive. Again, built into Windows. Do you have Office 365 subscription? If so, you've got 1TB of storage. Just use OneDrive folders on you PC to store documents, pictures etc, and it goes to the cloud. Job done. No history though, but can pair it up with File History and an external drive. The more backups the better.
Glacier is $0.004/GB/month, so 500GB will be more than £3/year.

File history keeps a copy of every version of every file, locally.
OneDrive copies the most recent of everything to the cloud.
