Just got a call from him...
My lad leaves things till the last minute. Lol
Anyway... He's going to a music festival in Belgium in a month's time.
His 5 year "kids" passport has ran out.
If he pays the post office to check his application and send it, is 4 weeks doable ? Not exactly peak holiday session.
He could drive up to London.... But not on a week day. 🙁 Guessing they are not open at weekends but will Google ?
Cheers guys !
If nothing's changing, he'll probably get it back in time, is my experience
You can do the whole thing online including uploading your photo.
Mine took eight or nine days. Wasn't an emergency or anything. Just the normal process
They won't send the new one till they receive you old one back in the post though
They lost my old one so I had to report my old one as lost and start the process again. You might get lucky but if he really needs it then I'd go in person. There are various offices around the country.
4 weeks.... ROFL, No problem at all.
TBH i'd say you'd have a reasonable chance of getting 4 passport applications processed in series in that time.
1 passport, definitely. Don't stress. Don't go to London just to get that done.
Just renewed sons online. 2 weeks. Tell him to get on with it
Recently did my renewal online.
I was honestly shocked at how good the service was.
You can just upload a (decent) photo from a phone now then send in the old passport.
I sent mine in on Sunday 7th. Got daily progress updates by text, as well as a tracking number. Had the new one in my hand by Friday 12th!!
Amazingly good for a gov department.
Do it online and send off the form by post, usually a pretty quick turn around for renewal, especially this time of year, but if it's his first real passport, hard to say.
Get the application in immediately would be my advice, and make damn sure the photo is compliant, of there's a printer /photography shop local, they'll do a proper one for not much money.
Took a week when I did mine in the autumn. Glad I didnt pay for speedy service.
Shouldn’t be too much of a worry I reckon, he's only change is from a “kids” passport to an adult one.
Do it online..
Does anyone know if the over 26 still applies for online applications. Just done Kevin's and it's on its way back after four days. Our daughter is 19 and hers is also due but can't find anything for under 26 and online applications
Just had mine done, did take it to the PO for the check and send service and had the new one in under 10 days.
Don’t tell him he has plenty of time 😉 Do ot online for him and tell him to send the old one back immediately - imo that’s plan A. Plan B would be to have him do it online and let him face the consequences of not getting it back.
I could have just SWORN I read you couldn't apply online?
I totally, never knew that ! ?
I did check and send at the PO at this time of year a couple of years ago. I think I send it on the Thursday or Friday and received the new passport on the Monday or Tuesday, before I got the text telling me it was about to be dispatched!
MrsCarlosg renewed ours online a couple of weeks ago , they only took 8 days to arrive . Your son should be fine OP.
So after doing the online stuff, he would just need to send his old one plus proof of ID etc ?
Got my wifes one (it expired 5 years ago) back in 6 days, photo taken in a booth that gives a serial No so that you can upload it direct to the online renewal.
Ok, cheers guys for the help! 😀
After spending over a week consciously looking for a photo booth and finally getting decent photos taken, i went online to start the registration .
Turns out you can just upload a photo from your phone, whole application completed in under ten minutes and new one received within 7days.
Surprisingly fantastic service, especially given it is dealing with the government.
I now have six passport photos that I don't know what to do with. Might start slipping them in to strangers bags.
Just had my passport renewed via snail mail in about 2 weeks - less than in reality as there was a few days delay as they needed a letter from my employer as it is a second passport. So yes I'd say. Get the application in ASAP and within 4 weeks should be very doable.
Renewed mine online last week. It took 3 days.
I did mine back in... October I think. Took ten days from application to receiving the new passport.
Of course, this doesn't factor in problems. If they reject it for some reason, the process starts again.
Did mines online just over a week from start to finish , just make sure the picture meets all the Criteria ,I couldn't believe how easy it was 😀Later this year the price is going up £3 if you do it online & £12 if you do it postal
Kids one you can start the renewal online, they them send you a form to check. Photo can't be done online (for children). I think online photo is only accepted when you are identifiable between the photos. Just done renewals on our eldest and was under two weeks (including faff time as we were delayed getting a photo for the youngest as she screams at cameras!).
Our lads one came back the same week.
Similar experience here, application made online and took roughly around a week.
Coild be a hold up if they don’t accept the photo though so as above, make sure it’s compliant or use the check service to be on the safe side.
I'm going for almost certainly yes.
I live on the other side of the world and applied for my son's first passport. It travelled to Liverpool, was done same day, and DHLed back. Total time was 8 days including 3 weekend days, so 5 working days. Pretty impressive.
I'd use the check service, as advised elsewhere, as it's going to be user error that slows things down not the passport office these days.
We found out just days before going to Turkey, that our sons passport expired within 6 months of the date of entry and he therefore wouldn't be allowed entry.
Cue emergency fast track passport application and a drive down to Newcastle where I had been assured they would process the application.
I arrived and they proceeded to tell me that they couldn't process it there after all. Went mental at them and funnily enough, they could do it after all.
Its a yes from me as well - if you can't do it on-line for whatever reason, use the Post office 'check and send' service, they read the form and make sure you've not cocked it up, then it goes into an internal mail service which is delivered to the passport office the following morning.
My Dad did this last month and got his passport within a week.
Another happy customer here too – They received my application on 21 January. I used a photograph I took myself at home which the online checker approved but a manual check rejected (glare on my glasses apparently but I couldn't see any). Anyway, I took another without my glasses on, it was approved and I just received the new passport this morning.
My mind was blown in January, needed to renew existing passport - uploaded a new photo and paid fee all online, sent old passport first class on a monday - received new passport back on the following friday. 4 days.
I can only conclude that January is best time for passport transactions, and that the interwebs is well good.
Online renewal here - sent it on Wed 20th Dec and got it back Sat 23rd Dec. Great Service.
Quick check guys!
This the right link for online app?
Have to physically print it off at end and send it away, not fully online i mean ?
Huge thanks!

Yup
Cheers !
January next year if you want to keep your non-Daily Mail passport for the maximum amount of time. 😜
I just applied for a new passport. I handed over my application to the Post Office lunchtime on the 20th December. (Remember xmas post and the bank holidays). It was a renewal, not a new passport, and I am a UK citizen, but needed a fresh photograph as part of the renewal.
I had it delivered on 2nd Jan.
My Driving licence I renewed the day before was even quicker.
I have to say, seriously impressed.
> https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport < Says up to six weeks for first adult passport so I wouldn't hang about!
Hmmm.... After convincing him not to bother going to London i hope people are right about it being only about a week. Lol
I guess the Passport Office is gearing up for some expected upturn in activity. Can't think what that might be...
