Seems to be a thing that when it snows in the UK half the population develops an uncontrollable urge to get in their cars and drive somewhere.

I will admit I do love going for a drive in the snow. You're warm and cocooned whilst the weather goes nuts against the windscreen, and controlling mini slides* is good fun. Plus, I get to laugh at the people getting stuck, and pat myself on the back for getting winter tyres.

* Away from other traffic, people, obstacles, obviously. At 5mph 🙂

It's snowing pretty heavily right now in Sheffield. I hope this means I can find somewhere to snowboard.

Just starting to snow in Chesterfield. However the ground is wet from all the rain so I'd be surprised if it sticks.

Just walked to work in Sheffield and it's coming down heavy. The roads near home haven't been cleared so there was plenty of cars slithering around. Pretty impressive considering the city centre usually just gets freezing sleet.

I also get this. I won't drive anywhere I'll just spend all day on ebay looking at Subaru's until it's all melted.

There are a couple of roads nearby that would be steep enough to be a black graded ski run, and local facebook pages are full of people shocked that they've crashed their car on it today

Snowing hard here in North Sheffield too. Glad I've got the all season tyres fitted (front and back now) as Mrs D may need my car to get to work tonight.

About four inches in my part of Harrogate again – we got nine inches last week so let's see if that record is beaten. At the moment it is coming down quite hard so I think it could be close.

And the roads were a nightmare this morning - 2WD cars getting stuck on flat bits of road even!

Traffic chaos in Sheffield. The view from my office is hilarious and alarming in equal measure. Already seen a few shunts.

@Elshalimo Yeah Scholes Lane, one of my usual routes. Gave up trying to get to trig point as it was hard going on the moor, plus getting very wet! Today was a better riding day TBH

Lovely ride round Oakwell hall last night in the snow - no one about - Managed a good 90 minutes doing repeats of blue before the paranoia of werewolves got to me - I mean where are you going to find a silver bullet in oakwell at 6.30 on a friday night....

Was gorgeous last night (sneaked out with the RC car for some Epic Skidz). Today, all is slush. Looks lovely but bloody ridiculously hard work on the bike. Hoping tonight's forecast is right and we get a proper massive dump but the temps are a wee bit high

Weird weather. Been hammering down with rain here for about 2 days non-stop, just looked out of the window a couple of hours after walking home in the rain, now everywhere is white!

Aye very weird weather in Newcastle too. Was peeing doon with rain a few hours ago when I walked home from picking the bairn up and now it’s like a winter wonderland oot there! Meant to get heavier in the wee hours too. I LOVE snow me. Can’t get anything done when it’s snowing!

Snowed loads overnight here in Macclesfield but it’s pretty thin on the ground now. Wish it would snow properly and stick. The best thing about driving when heavy snow is coming down is putting your full beam on and accelerating so it feels like you’re piloting a ship through hyperspace. I love snow

No as much as I was expecting here this morning, though on top of yesterday's it does mean there's a fair whack now. Had hoped to get another quick ski in before work this morning, but with the wind it would have been a bit grim in low visibility! Fingers crossed for clearer conditions in the morning.

@himupstairs - yup, just been for a very quick ski up in the more southern Pentlands and there's some hefty slab developed. I think with the wet weather and warm temperatures beforehand the underneath of the snow pack hasn't really bonded/has melted upwards a bit.

Definitely best to pick your lines - as always!

I guess this thread will be a hot topic today! Fair bit on herefordshire/Worcestershire border this morning and still coming down hard.
Might take a pic when I can be bothered to get up!

Woken up by a single clap of what may well have been thundersnow at ~0630 in Southampton, but we've since has some rain that melted the thin layer of snow, reckon it's got good potential for Bambi on ice out there now.

No snow here yet just north of Derby. Had a light covering yesterday morning that went mid afternoon.

Last night was Derbyshire Scouts Chilly Camp. Hoping the frost goes off his tent so we can take it down today, but may well snow before then if the forecast is right.

Couple of inches round Didcot area but not sticky or crisp. I'll try the road bike later to Tesco but happy to give up after the first 5 yards if it is crap. No MTB up here otherwise I'd be across the fields.

Couple of inches here in North Wilts overnight, already starting to melt this afternoon.
Still enough lying around to make the outlying villages and countryside look picturesque.

The landscape shots are looking down the valley towards Box and Bath, the church is in Biddestone.

Finally snowed in Cardiff, first time in a good few years. Walk with the kids this morning and managed a ride at dusk. Still a few bits of hardpack snow on the roads and trails - the best surface for riding over 🙂

In our little corner of West Yorkshire we’ve got the 3rd heavy morning of snow this winter - all 3 have been the heaviest I remember it been in a good few years!

Thick snow north Sheffield. Most I've seen on the garden in years. Means the schools are closed - even for home learning! Not quite sure how that works...

Another four inches of snow in North Yorkshire this morning and still coming down. This is the third time this year and the roads are in exactly the same condition every time, very definition of insanity.

There's a great corner where you can watch cars slowly slide down the hill and bounce expensively off the solid stone wall at the bottom.

Down here in Kent, we get as much snow as you northerners get summer (1 or 2 days a year), we don't have mountains or even big hills, and now we can't even have our own snow thread 😭😭😭

Same here. I'm in Huddersfield / Kirklees, and I'm fed up of constant snow updates. I don't actually see the point. All we need to know is when it is going to clear up. Having 'who has the biggest layer of snow' competitions is boring and has no novelty appeal when it happens every year.

It's been every week since Xmas, I think it's something to do with it being winter and that West Yorkshire is very hilly.

Do you need a hug? I'm just the other side of the M62. 🤗😘

Bloody oodles of the stuff here and more falling. In fact I had to drag my bin through it just a couple of minutes ago. We've had snow at street/garden level since Xmas eve.

Look how much fun it is!!

@ian_french - Glad to see you're getting into the spirit of the OP 😁.

We've currently got an amber weather warning for our area. Snow consists of a very light covering and roads are all clear. But underwhelming TBH.

Just a dusting here but on top of some surviving snow from the last falls so it's pretty random. Some trails very very slippy, some snowdrifts that you can walk over like an elf then you step too hard and fall through to your thighs... Gorgeous still day, blue skies, pretty bloody hard riding though

Snowplough

This is the snowplough that got stuck on our road on Friday - spent an hour helping to dig him out - that's a big tractor, those wheels are over 1.5m diameter. If he doesn't come out each day, we're stuck as the drifts blow in about a metre deep across the road. I have to dig the wheelie bins out in the morning as they get covered. I managed to step across a 5ft high 5-bar gate today to walk into a field. -15C forecast for later in the week which means this lots not melting in a hurry.

Even if I could get my fat bike out of storage, it would be pretty useless as we've simply got too much snow!

It's not as deep as I expected this morning - perhaps only a couple of inches.

Surely others have more, unless this is press panic again.... 🤔

I was thinking of you @dovebiker whilst battling my way through some 1.5m drifts on Ben Rinnes with the splitboard, and that plenty folk up the glens will have monster drifts!
-12C when I got in the car this morning 🥶

About another 6 inches yesterday evening and overnight in Angus; like Scotroutes, we've had frozen ground and/or snow since before Hogmanay. Very light, cold, fluffy powder snow. Heading out for a wee ski shortly, go and find a forest to do turns in..

A wee spot of sledging at lunch time is in order.
