No love for Sicario here ? - probably the best film of the year.

Tense and superbly directed with welcome lack of Hollywood exposition. Strong performances by all and a genuine feeling of terror in some scenes.

Score and lensing is all fantastic.

just mentioned it two minutes ago on the 11pm thread.

Didn't really know what to expect. The old lady just wanted to go to the cinema last weekend and this seemed the best that was on.

Very bleak, very violent but a good story. It's another one of those films though that makes me think probably unfairly 'cross Mexico off my list of places to visit' 😆

Great performances from all actors with no real superstars in it.

no real superstars in it.

Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin aren't superstars?!?!?
Cripes, if two names would draw me to a film, they are pretty near the top!

I know what he means though - they're all excellent calibre actors but not big crowd pullers. Emily Blunt is getting that way.

Irrespective, it's a terrific set of performances.

and it's better for it. It would be dreadful if it had someone like Tom Cruise in it

I dislike tom Cruise, but he's made some fine films in his time!

Born on the Fourth of July.
Jack Reacher
Eyes Wide Shut
Magnolia
Valkyrie
The Last Samurai
Color of Money

Cruise has made a lot of films.

But let's not derail!

none of those are great examples though ! ok maybe Born on the 4th July is decent, and you could have had Rain Man. Vanilla Sky is a bad remake of Open Your Eyes, the film clearly has a massive budget cut half-way through

not seen sicaro, am tempted though

Sicaro sounds good, think i'll have to make a visit to go watch that

Vanilla Sky??!? Jesus wept that film is terrible

Cruise is a pretty decent actor when he puts his (slightly deranged) mind to it

Collateral being one film where he went against type and was very good

Top gun
Edge of tomorrow
Risky business
Minority report
Tropic thunder (bit part, but a great film)
If you haven't seen this; watch it!

Is he a great actor? I dunno but he's box office and has a knack for choosing the right films.

How would do you deduce that? Fims are generally shot out of sequence!

Unless you've read something?

I found Sicario to be a bit too long and a bit too dull. I didn't really find it edge of seat exciting.

I saw it and thought it was very good.

Makes you think about what we can / are doing about the drug problem.

Great acting, great filming. No way am I going to Mexico though.

if only they cut 5 seconds off each scene with omminous music at a point where a decision needed to be made, where its blatently clear what the decision will end up being.

felt like they‘d watched a bit too much x-factor/apprentice.

just that one change and otherwise the film was cracking, well worth a watch.

Just don‘t oversell the "this is a tense moment", the actors all sold it well enough without over egging the pauses.
